Getting Between Vilnius and Riga is either expensive or time consuming- there isn’t too much of a middle ground between these two options. But both cities are fantastic places to visit and should be on your list if you’re in the region.
In todays video, let’s look at the transportation options available and then go over my own personal experience taking a trip from one city to the other. In the end, we will ask whether it’s worth taking a day trip to either city.
No, there are no trains that take passengers from Vilnius to Riga.

Yes!! Departing Vilnius early in the morning, and Riga in the afternoon. Operated by LTG Lithuanian railways with some of the newest diesel multiple units, it takes some 3.5h

It is a bit crazy that 300km trip is two days adventure. Normally it would be half a day with high speed train or one day with normal train.

If you're as crazy (like me) you can also a take a train to Turmantantas walk 2,2 km (36 minutes), take a 40 minutes bus ride from Zemgale to Daugavpils and after some time to enjoy Daugavpils,take a train to Riga. I admit this is a long journey and isn't the directest way, but you see many things along the way (you can open the windows in the trains). So it is great for train enthusiasts like me. You can start either 5:45 or 11:00am. PS: Don't expect too much of the toilets

@@timectrl Nice, I'll write some more information: For the Vilnius-Turmantas section you can see and book connections on the site LTG Link. For the 40 minutes busride it's the website 1188. lv and for the train to Riga use pv. lv Early connection: 5:45 Vilnius 8:03 Turmantas Walk (There's a footpath parallel to the tracks) 8:45 Zemgale 9:25 Daugavpils 13:06 Daugavpils 16:30 Riga Later connection (useful if you're coming from Kaunas) 11:00 Vilnius 13:23 Turmantas Walk 14:05 Zemgale 14:45 Daugavpils 17:37 Daugavpils 21:00 Riga I travelled in that direction and it worked very well, for the other direction use the websites :) Note that both the bus and the train on the latvian side only run 4 times a day.! I hope this helps, if anyone has questions, feel free to ask them.

@@timectrl Did you knew earlier of the connection, if yes how? I'm asking because when I researched for my journey all the informations were hard to find...

I live in Dobele which is a Latvian town not that far from Lithuanian border and there's absolutely no public transportation to Lithuanian border towns - everything goes only through Riga which is very unfair if you live in a province... i hate the fact that young people leave their places for Riga which basically stops the town growth... very unfair
@timectrl
@timectrl 2 года назад
Lithuania wants a Jelgava - Siauliai train and I'm fairly sure that there is a daily Dobele - Jelgava train.

@@timectrl Yes, there is, however how am i supposed to get to other cities like Mažeikiai, Naujoji Akmene or Klaipēda?
@timectrl
@timectrl 2 года назад
@@psy-lion Well when the train runs, you can take Siauliai - Klaipeda and I think a train also runs to Naujoji. If you enter Lithuania there is service everywhere.

@@timectrl Oh, that's good to now. Do you also have a dedicated application which shows all of the available routes and pricing?

I paid 16 € for RIX-VNO by AirBaltic. There was a train service until COVID pandemic, but it was served by the Ukrainian railways so now it is very unlikely to be resumed. Eurolines is just a brand of Kautra here in Lithuania.

I find Kautra intercity bus services pretty reliable, from my expierences atleast. Have not tried many others though.

IfI had to choose, I would choose Rail Baltica. Vilnius-Talinn by train. If I wanna go earlier before it gets opened. I'd take a FlixBus from Panevežys as sometimes prices go low as 5 euros! (Per person) So, 20 euros round-trip fkr 2 people, (i would travel with someome else) Budget hotel is about 30 euros. So 50 euros, pretty good.

I am going to be in Kaunas for a wedding in the fall. This won't be my first time in Vilnius nor Kaunas. But thinking of visiting the other Baltic States while there for the first time . by renting a car and drive from Kaunas to Helsinki (dropping the car off in Tallin and take the ferry to Helsinki) visiting Klaipeda spending a couple days in Riga, Tallin, and Helsinki before flying back to the Boston in the States. Beside the Hill of Crosses anyone got any advice on where I should stop and what to check out along this journey? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
