Hear from President of Hockey Operations and GM Steve Staios and new Senators Head Coach Travis Green as Green is introduced to the Ottawa media for the first time.
@@johnnyenglish9622the only thing bigger than the coaching carousel, is the goalie carousel in Ottawa. Enough. Fix the rest of the team first. Goalies are the cherry on top of a team, not the foundation. Fix the foundation.
He might not be the best available coach, but it was quite possible he was the best one willing to come here. I'm gunna give the guy a chance. I hope for the best and reserve judgment until i see the teams record this November
@ItotheCtotheE a coach like Berube probably has offers from multiple different teams and can just pick his spot.. bad goaltending can kill coaching careers so our sv% last season might have turned a few of the bigger names off
Probably a few factors- Berube probably wants 25 million (5x5) and the organization probably doesn’t want to do that because it makes no sense. The rest of the candidates were not standouts
Hey, I am a francophone...sure it's nice if the coach can speak French...but I am more interested in winning. As long as Green has an open mind and maybe learn a few phrases - Bonjour... I really don't see that as a criteria. He needs to be a great hockey coach. We had Guy Boucher, he speaks French we had great run in 2017 (that was fun) but then things fell apart. Losing is no fun, in French or English. So I am glad the Sens got a hockey guy! It's also great that Mr Andlauer grew up in Montreal, speaks French and sets the right tone at the top. He knows how to approach that dynamic and it shows.
Not the coach I was hoping for, but it's nice to see the organization not shopping for coaches in the bargain bin! He's got my (tentative) support until we see how the team starts next season.
@@prehensilelung1751 Bargain bin is hiring a coach with little-to-no NHL head coaching experience because it's cheaper. That doesn't describe this situation at all. You must be new here: Craig Hartsberg. Cory Clouston. Paul Mclean. Dave Cameron. Guy Boucher. DJ Smith. Bargain bin coaches: either zero experience or washed-up. But Melnyk was cheap so they got hired. Not one of them has gotten another NHL head coaching job since.
Green’s contract is literally bottom quartile of coaches in the league. If that isn’t bargain bin shopping, I don’t know what is. He’s making less than half what the highest paid coaches get.
@@donovans. Don't think you know what a quartile is... If you did, you'd know you couldn't place anyone in a quartile without having a full list of NHL head coach salaries.
Completely different situation in Vancouver when he was there. New Jersey had the same problem Ottawa did, they couldn't get a save, which isn't on the coach.@DannyG613
Come on by’s let’s be proud we finally got a new head coach to make this team run on full speed ahead!! Come on by’s let’s get er done next season let’s get er done! Been rooting fer sens since 97/98 season and they and you guys will always be my team!! Welcome Travis!!
I’m feeling much better about him. I actually found myself feeling massively sorry for him, has to hurt getting slammed like that before you even come to the city. Let’s hope they bring in some solid assistants, Todd Rierden would be solid. Bottom line is the players want to win, and so does Green, he is going to prove everyone wrong.
I think Staios is being experimental at the start but it does seem like the same old same of dev coach hire and then playoff coach hiring cycles will continue. I want us to go back to that late 2000's level of competitiveness.
the owners and staff might have confidence in you, but as of right now, i dont think any fans do. Prove us all wrong, but let me tell you. If this next season starts off rough and we miss the playoffs again, youre gonna have a rough next 3 years
@DannyG613 tocchet had basically no coaching success before Vancouver. He coached Arizona to the bottom or mediocrity at best. It’s about getting the right mix of player, people acting like he’s some genius now and he’s not. They are getting good performances from their elite players, maybe he’s pushing the right buttons but he’s nothing special. Give Travis green a decent roster and see what he can do
You're already proven wrong because there are plenty of fans that have confidence in Green. You are just too weak/dumb to form your own opinion so here you are seeking approval from the twitter echo chamber.
If we believe in Mr Andlauer and believe that Steve Staios knows what he is doing, then it follows that we have to believe they made the best possible choice. Green is an NHLer, not a junior coach. He might not have a Stanley Cup résumé ... yet! However, he does scars earned at the NHL level. Cannot solely look at win-loss records, there is more to it as Staios said. I trust he made the right choice. Go for it.
1) Berube only wants to start with a team who's already making the playoffs consistently and take them to the next level. Plus $ 2) There are cities far more attractive to other coaches (E.g., LA's year round weather; American cities have WAY less media/fan scrutiny) Thus, when you're Winnipeg or Ottawa, you're left picking from the rest.
No Steve, the record is the ONLY thing that matters! You don't win anything for being a good guy. This guy is gonna run this team further into the ground for the simple fact, he is not qualified for this position and ONLY got it because his buddy owns the team. NO other NHL team would have hired Staois for an open GM job. The more things change in Ottawa the more they stay the same. Wake me up in four years when were doing another head coach and GM search.
I'll give Green a Chance, but if Senators miss the playoffs, I am calling you out completely, Senators hasn't been in the playoffs since 2017, and I am getting tired of watching this team falling out of the playoffs constantly,,I have been watching the Ottawa Senators for a long time now, and I am angry watching this team stumble, I am getting sick and tired of this, this is the last straw, SENATORS WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE,
As a Die had Sens fan since I was a kid (20 years) - I'm tired of the typical politician approach. Saying the right things, then when it comes time to deliver, big time failure. I am fed up with one nice playoff run in the past 11 years. It's a disgrace, it's frustrating beyond belief. We need to have an OUTSTANDING October/November. No excuses. I will go on record saying this coach will not be here for the entirety of his contract.
When Staois (himself one of the lowest paid GM’s in the NHL-likely bottom 3) says they conducted a thorough search, I think he forgot to add; under the financial constraints we operate under. When your budget for an NHL coach is less than $2M/year, this is what ya get! Top tier coaches or high profile coaching names in this league command $4-6M/year-no way in hell Sens ownership was gonna fork over that kinda dough. As a result, Staois had to go coach-shopping with a low-limit credit card.
This was a monetary decision. 4 year deal for Green at approx $1.5M/year. Berube is rumoured to be in the $5-6M/year for his next coaching gig. I think Sens fans who are saying other coaches don’t wanna come to Ottawa are actually wrong. Other more prominent coaching names don’t want to come because the Sens simply can’t pay to money needed to attract a top tier coach-not even close! This 4 year deal for Travis Green will make him one of the lowest paid coaches in the NHL. Andlauer simply doesn’t have the budget to hire a top tier or big name coach. As a result, this is what you get-just a dude, who’s coached and played in this league, but hasn’t really accomplished much in either role.
It's more than just money. American cities have far less media and fan scrutiny. LA has better weather. On and On and On. Winnipeg and Ottawa can only pick from the scrap heap.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for him to learn Russian so he can better communicate with his players and win more games than to waste time learning a language that has zero benefit on the ice? The coaches job is to win hockey games. Get a PR person to learn French if anyone. And what’s wrong with google translate? It takes 2 seconds. A lot easier than having a guy spend half his time trying to learn a new (professionally useless) language. How completely stupid.
I feel bad for you guys. Green is an assistant coach at best in this league. Now you guys are stuck with him for upwards of 4 years leading the team. Oh lord!
Poverty franchise and poverty hire. Senators should be removed from the league. What do they contribute? Besides losing? Same goes for Sabres and blue jackets. Just get out of the league if you suck.
This new ownership is clueless. The owner hires his buddy with ZERO NHL GM experience, the GM then hires his buddy who has a losing record as a head coach. If he was any good, New Jersey would have kept him. We will be looking for a new coach and GM in two years. The excitement about this new ownership has soured over the last year and I have no hope or excitement for the future, just more of the same in Ottawa.
@@Redguard-Nazeem yea I'll continue to bitch this is atrocious. Way too long with dj now we're locked into mid. I pray I'm wrong but the only people who say good things about him are friends with him
@@jamiedavistowing4156 Ive been keeping an open mind for so long it's so difficult with this team. My last straw was korpisalo I knew it was stupid but I was hoping we'd get lucky. I'll always be delusional though so that's how I'm still able to be a fan
