Here’s a step by step instructional video on how to change the oil on your Ford Lehman 120 diesel engine for marine application. I’ve done my best to explain why some steps are the way they are, such as the different fill level tick marks on the dipstick.
As always, continue to use the oil and filters that you trust and know. Also remember that depending what the weather is like in your part of the world, you might need to change your oil.
Please feel free to add your experience and questions in the comments.
If you want to see any other instructional videos about owning and living aboard a trawler please let me know!

Tip of the day: Oil fill reservoir is called valve cover and if you see a lot of oil under/inside the valve cover you have some serious problem with over filling the engine with oil. The oil you fill up the engine with runs all the way down from the valve cover to the oil pan in the bottom of the engine. Cheers from Sweden ;-)

Many thanks! Haven’t ever seen oil on the cover but will add it to my list of things to watch out for!

@@crown_city_trawlers you wont see any unless the oil stays inside the cover when you do an oil change, then you have a blockage inside the cylinder head. But as I saw from your video your engine looks in perfekt shape inside, no carbon build up on the valve springs or rocker arms. At least the engine in your video have been maintained perfectly with oil changes etc.

You use good oil! Might want to upgrade the oil filter though. (Research Fram oil filters and you’ll know why!) Go with NAPA Gold (Part # FIL 1515) or equivalent. 👍🏻

Thanks for watching! Definitely gonna get better oil filters for my next oil change

Remember, the oil will be viscous either cold or hot. You want it to be less viscous so that it flows out of the engine internals more easily. If you are using a flash light smaller than the diameter of the engine oil filler hole, it should be used with a wrist lanyard. Small items dropped into such openings have a way of scuttling down into unreadable areas..then the fun begins. Good point of cracking the fill cap when draining. It then acts as a vacuum breaker. Well done here!

You know you can refill with that pump as well. Makes it very easy
@crown_city_trawlers
@crown_city_trawlers 2 года назад
Did not know that, but it makes sense given the fact that the pump goes both ways! Is that how you do yours? If so, do you have a perfect measurement of how much oil needs to go back in every time?

@@crown_city_trawlers I just put back what I take out and then just get close and keep checking slowly until it reads correctly on the dip stick

What if you don't have a pump? I am trying to keep the boat afloat. Captain passed away and in October and I am so grateful for guys like you keeping things simple.

Nice clean engine and engine room. Very Impressive. Was it just me or did that old filter not drip any old oil and did it look clean and new when removed like no oil had passed through it? I hope you don't have an oil flow problem to your filter or worse low oil pressure throughout the engine.

Hey, thanks for the compliment! Also sharp eye on the old filter! I actually forgot to run the engine before change the oil this time so it had been sitting for a while and as there was not much oil that came out. Definitely won’t forget next time!

Joe, that oil filter didn’t look like it was ever used. What was going on there?

The engine hadn’t run for a while when I took it off so it was pretty much dry

How many running hours between oil changes? Thanks for the informative video.

main engine oil should be changed every 200 hours. Injectors every 50

@@crown_city_trawlers interesting. I might be off in my estimation but it sounds like marine Diesel engines need more frequent oil changes than a Diesel engine for a vehicle. 👍🏻

@@crown_city_trawlers my comment might have come across not as I intended. I wasn’t questioning whether what you said was correct I was merely commenting that it seems marine Diesel engines need oil changes more frequently than their auto/truck counterparts. Sorry if it sounded like I was attacking you. 👍🏻
