Picked up parts to build a complete transmission. This way i will have 2 transmissions. I have plans to convert my Jato 3.3 nitro car to electric so I will attempt to use the old plastic gear box on the Jato.
Hi: Regarding that idler gear pin that your LHS did not have, actually comes with the two case halves which you have to buy in order to get the new pin. There is no part number for just this part. Looking at the wear marks on the long part of the slipper shaft, right next to the gear, the black is worn off, probably from the excessive clearnce between this part and the bearing bore.Probably in time, that bearing would have "egged" and worn the shaft out, same with the idler shaft. Thanks,Huck
Thanks! I finally got the gear on after cleaning the bore up from some rough machining marks and slid the gear up to the pin and locked it there with Loctite. I notice that all the places that use the 5x11x4 bearing, have .002 clearnce between mating parts, such as the the idler gear shaft(4.95mm),slipper clutch shaft, both sides of the idler gear(4.95mm).both sides of differential. Converted to standard measure, that makes .002 clearance. Not near enough to spin the bore of the bearing. Thanks
Aluminum cases are nice, I had a Integy one a couple years back and basically did what you did (brand new everything) and it was awesome. I could spin it and it would rotate on its own for a couple of seconds and was dead quiet.
Thank you for the upload. I just scrapped the wife's rustler and for some reason thought that the main diff gear faces the other way. I know it sounds stupid lol. Thanks again
I used a cig lighter to heat up my input gear a little before i tapped the shaft into it. worked mint. just a little heat you dont have to make it glow.
Hi there great video. Liked and subed. Can you tell me . Did you use High speed bearings in the transmission. Or standard bearings. I want to rebuild mine but not sure what bearings to use.
@TheHuck1950 Yeah after searching around for a while I figured that out =) You have to buy the whole gear box just for that pin. Kinda weird they don't sell that separately. When you purchase an REM aluminum gear box it doesn't come with a pin either but I'm sure you can find something at a hardware store that would work =)
@TheHuck1950 Another thing before hammering make sure the pin and slot line up because you will never get that gear turned around the shaft once its on lol
@TheHuck1950 Yes that gear fits on EXTREMELY tight. You will have to hammer it on. What I did is slip it on as much as I could then stuck the shaft through the hole in a pair of pliers with the gear to the top. Then tap on the shaft with a hammer. So you're not really gripping the gear with the pliers it just sits on top with the shaft through the hole. Hope that makes sense. If it doesn't let me know and I can take a picture to show you what I mean.
@jricardo551 Cool! glad you liked it and sorry for responding a month later.. lol. I've been pretty busy but I do want to get more videos up like a how to on lowering your car for speed runs
@TheHuck1950 Its funny you mentioned that. I had planned on originally doing that but never did. I'll have to add some annotations on it. I'll try to do it this weekend some time.
Great vid!!! Just started with Rustler, super helpfull!!!!!! Did u had to mod rustler's body in any way to install that tranny??? im thinking of getting same Thanks dude
You should have greased the shafts and the gear bores before putting it all in. They eventually lube but they may run dry for a bit and accelerate wear. The shafts are only polished and are soft.
Hi: Did you ever install that drive gear onto the slipper shaft at around 6:49 of your video, cause I am trying and the gear only goes on about 3/4" and is super tight from there on. I am thinking I may need some serious heat,to expand the gear some what, but not sure how much heat so as to not soften the gear too much. How did you install your gear? Thanks!
i have a question for you i want to make my transmission aluminum too but i am not sure if its the same as a Traxxas nitro Rustler 2.5 be honest because i don't want to waist my money.
Hello, I bought a Integy Red case and did everything ( twice ) like you said, but there is still something binding up? Feels like it's hitting part of the case? Any ideas??
Its a good possibility that it is hitting the case. Try to spin gears with case open and see if its touching anywhere if you haven't done that already which im sure you have. I've heard a lot of bad things about Integy parts so I usually stay away from them.
