The Nitrogang is doing the break in runs on this Traxxas T-maxx 2.5 classic. It's a modern version of the old-school T-maxx. It's still sold brand new and will give you the best idea of what an old-school traxxas monster truck was like. This one is getting broken-in but for some reason has a weird stuttering transmission. We also drive an original HPI rs4 in fully stock mode! Lets do this!.

The old black trans t-maxes have a clutch in the transmission that engages at a certain rpm. Perfectly normal as long as it goes away once you get going. If it is lunging like that at idle, turn the idle down and it’ll stop. It’s idling just fast enough to make that clutch barely engage then disengage. Hope this helps.

that studder is normal since it has reverse i has to have a neutral thats the cyntrifical clutch it needs to have the grub screw on the first gear a quarter turn to left

You have something loose or out of adjustment. Go over it and check the reverse forward arm and clutch. That’s not normal.

that jumping is normal. There is a clutch inside the transmission that engages with a pin and what's happening is the clutch is jumping on and off that pin at very light throttle. You just have to give it more throttle than that in order to avoid the problem. It's just an old T-Maxx thing. Lowering the idle will stop it from happening when it's sitting still.

I’ve wanted a tmaxx since I was maybe 6 years old, I remember my uncle had one and I’d roll it around the house, I got one not to long ago and with a few repairs and tuning I got me a working nitro rc car, I can’t decide if I like electric or nitro, both are fun, but I think nitro is the most epic because of the noise and smell of nitro fuel burning. Awesome video!

I know what you mean, the nitro and electrics are totally different, they bring a different kind of fun, I don't hate electrics, but I prefer the real internal combustion engines just for the pure novelty of it, and it's how I started out in this hobby too.

My cousin still has his first gen T maxx came with the trx.15 and it shudders on take off too always did. Don't know why. I use to have the sport maxx 2.5r 2wd single speed transmission that did not shudder. I think it's the t maxx classic trans. Great video

that studder is super normal for that old transmission all my t-maxxes will do that at low rpm because the little shoe that flings out is just barely catching the pin in the trans until you get it spinning faster, you can tune it out of the idle but you kinda just need to get it locked it before you start rolling. you can also take apart the trans and make sure that those shoes still move freely, maybe it need to break in some more, i know my old tmaxx had a stuck shoe and i had to lube it to get it going in reverse again, and promptly chewed every tooth off of that gear with my .21 lol

That normal. The t maxx uses 2 drive hub for the forward and reverse. Same drive hub that's in the second gear that engages second gear. So at low rpm the hooks stays close and as you put a little rpm it open up and engage the first gear. That's what causes the stutter like that. To eliminate it, you get the forward only which get rid of the forward and reverse drive hub. Hope that help.

Twelthman's TMAXX problem has probably already been addressed in the comments (cause, you know, Nitro gang, we look out for each other), but I think that the centripetal clutch springs in the transmission are wound up too tight. I had the same problem (the stuttering) and doing that seemed to have helped. As for the bad engagement in reverse, try lowering the idle speed, that might help. Also, you should live stream on Twitch when you go on a road trip or when you fix your RCs, like IRL Streams. It'd be cool!

hey man! So far the forums and views are saying this is the way this particular T-maxx classic transmission is, due to the internal clutch engagement. I will look more into it in the next video on this thing. I've never owned an original model t-maxx, Only the 3.3, which has a totally different transmission. We will see, Nitrogang!!

@@hybrid32494 It actually looks to me like the brakes are adjusted wrong. I have an original T-maxx 2.5 as well, and it should not be locking up the wheels like that when you let go of the throttle. I'd check to see if the wheels spin freely while the throttle is at nuetral. Could also be that the brakes get stuck. It just relies on the blue aluminum piece turning by itself when you let go of the throttle so if that doesn't move freely the brakes might get stuck. I'd also make sure that can turn with no effort, and maybe pull it apart and put some lubrication on it. I used white lithium grease for mine on my T-maxx 3.3 cause the brakes were sticking and the lithium grease freed it right up. Brakes work flawlessly now.

I have a Revo and recently swapped a Kyosho KE21SP big block into it. The reverse mechanism has the same issue, and I believe it can be fixed by installing the Forward only kit

You know what really bothers me is when the road crews do a terrible job with road work, it's a way they can guarantee themselves more work soon. It stutters on idle, and take off due to the reverse gears. Install the forward only conversion kit inside the transmission and the problem will be gone. I had this same exact problem with my t maxx but now it’s running good. Takes off without stuttering and isles without jerking. Runs a little hot though.

3:41, I heard a lot of people had issues with the reverse transmission, but my suggestion is I made some tweaks by moving the shift rod to the front of the servo horn, compress the springs, and a high voltage servo to maybe make it useful.

hey bro! After making this video and researching the stuttering issue on my own, I can confirm you are 100% right, this is normal for this model T-maxx. The 3.3 is totally different and does not do that. The idle is a little high, and did need to be lowered some, you're also right. It appears to do that when the internal clutches hit. certain RPM, so no way on getting rid of it, you just gotta get though it and wait for the clutches to grab.

@@hybrid32494 I know this is an old video but that cogging is actually adjustable however you have to disassemble the transmission and get to the pawls inside and there are some grub screws and there are 2 of those little pawls and you can adjust the tension so it engages at a lower rpm and doesn't do that as bad. That is how the reverse system on those T Max 2.5 works that system protects the internal plastic gears of the transmission from stripping when you make the forward reverse switch. It's not like the revo opti-drive where it has an electronic sensor that Won't allow it to switch until the transmission stops spinning. Just figured I'd throw that out there for you maybe it will help you or some of the nitrogang. ✌

@hybrid32494 I had the same issue with my brand new Revo 3.3 when I was breaking it in (though it wasn't as obvious). After I broke the engine in and put some rpms in my 3.3 engine the issue went completely away. I believe I saw a Traxxas official video here on YT addressing this issue. Hope that helps. Also, at the end of the video, the engine was kicking in due to high rpm at idle.

The jerking is normal for the old style black trans. It has centrifugal clutches that engage forward and reverse. Slow down the idle and it will stop jerking or do a forward only conversion to get rid of all the jerking.

Classic T-Maxx has clutch fingers in the transmission to engage drive. It's an older system but it can be adjusted with a grub screw. Google is your friend for such things.

There is a clutch in transmission that grabs as speed increases, its normal. Its how they prevented the user from going into reverse when the truck is in motion.

This happened to my brand new traxxas revo 3.3. after breaking it in this happened. So i found out it was the transmission gear for me. The stock gears are garbage it was slipping, one of the tooth chipped out because it's plastic. I replaced all the gears in the gearbox with all metal gears upgrade. The power of that 3.3 engine just ripped through those. lol

The trans in this is totally different from the 3.3, but I know exactly what you're talking about on the 3.3, I have one of them myself too. Anyway, more on this soon, and this T-maxx now has a seized motor, LOL. One problem after another, it's ok, the Nitrogang is on it!!

6:55 that thing looks like a sensored brushless with the the phase wires mixed. Damn. Only thing I can think of is brake is still grabbing at light throttle and the clutch is having issues.

hey bro! So far I have done research on this Trans stuttering issue and it seems all of the 2.5 classic models do that. They have an internal clutch that tends to catch and release, that's why at a certain RPM it starts to do that. This means without doing a forward only conversion probably no way to eliminate that. But it's fine.

Traxxas will definitely teach you quick how to repair. That could be why they don't sell kits because even if you buy a ready to run you'll be soon taking it apart to fix it.

Lmao yep, especially when the gas gets stuck and in 0. 5 seconds your traxxas is on the other side of the road and completely destroyed the front end via curb... Speaking from experience yes, I've had to replace the entire chassis like 3 times😅

I have a brand new in box i never used , i did use another and you can eliminate it by adding lubricant to the transmission a heavy lubricant like the one the use in gear boxes

hey bro! I got into this hobby back in 2000 I think also, with a brand new HPI Nitro RTR 3, that was the shit back then. Shaft drive was killing it compared to the belts on the RS4 at the time, you know. It's been fun since!! Nitrogang..

Mine did same studder during break in destroyed transmission during second tank of fuel. Got it repaired then after 5 minutes same thing destroyed third time fixing been good but now motor is acting weird so pretty much abandoned the trashmax for nitro sport and nitro slash

hey my dude! So far the forums and my own research is leading to that stuttering being normal on the T-maxx Classic. It appears many people have it and it's due to an internal clutch that engages in such a way, seems nothing cud be done. I've never owned an original T-maxx, only the 3.3 model. Must be specific to the chassis I'd say. More on it soon, Nitrogang!

hey dude! So far most of the comments from owners of this exact truck are saying that cogging issue is normal for this model. It seems there is an internal clutch inside the transmission that tends to engage like that, so weird. The 3.3 trans is totally different in this regard. Anyway, more in part 2 of this video tomm.. See if the differentials are smooth by rotating one wheel, and the other one should spin the other way, if it feel rough or has any rough spots. If not, I'd check for broken teeth in the gears in the trans. But it does it at idle too, so I'm most likely wrong. Maybe change the glow plug cause those are kinda cheap, might as well.

hey bro! Let me give you some follow-up info on the trans issue in this model. It seems all the 2.5 classic models have this issue. It's a result of one of the internal clutches in the trans engaging, this is just how the 2.5 classic model works. The 3.3 trans is completely different and does not do this.

when i start my rc up the idle is 1mm but it starts getting high and when i go over quarter throttle it dies i’m still in break in so i don’t wanna tune it on a traxxas 3.3 jato

You can always go richer during break in but NEVER leaner. Try turning the high speed needle counterclockwise 1/4 turn and see if that helps.

Hey Man! I was wondering if anyone still used these T-maxx Classics! My pops gave me his old one and I;ve been rebuilding it. Your friend's T-Maxx sounds like it needed a low speed adjustment. If you're still driving, let me know! Just upgraded my 2.3 to 3.3 with my old Grave Digger body.

hey bro! Yes, that is a good idea too! But it seems like the stuttering isn't really related to the brake, its the internal COGGS of the trans, that is jus the way these trucks run with the t-maxx chassis trans. The 3.3 model completely does away with this issue. You must have just gotten the throttle to close a little more and it lowered the RPM which resulted in LESS or NO Cogging, you know.

dude, Duratrax was a super underrated brand, I use to love them! What do you think? I had the original nitro warhead and the later upgraded version called the RTX-27. Both were savage clones, but about 30% cheaper brand new, and very well equipped.

That twitching tmaxx... Try adjusting the low speed needle, not high speed needle. I had the same issue on my ofna ss truggy

Lean out your low speed screw. Personally i think thats normal for the tmaxx ive had 3 tmaxx trucks and adjusted them properly and they all had that. Or adjust the throttle trim
