This is the reason why I choose the 4runner. I don't care about fuel economy or the engine performance as long as it brings me home safe. Thanks for this video man! Drive safe
Great video! I used to lease cars constantly in order to find the right one. I bought my, Mary Beth, new in 2016. She is a Trail Premium, which is the same as the TRD Off Road starting in 2017. I live on a hill in New England, so I immediately put BF Goodrich KO2 tires on her, as I have major back problems, and can't shovel snow anymore. 8 years later, this gal hasn't had any problems, and still has no squeaks or rattles. She is the best car I've ever had. I'm 67, and have had more that 70 cars.
Nice video; I like videos showing 4Runner capabilities in snow. Bought our 2016 4Runner new; best purchase we've ever made. No issues at 157K; change fluids, filters, tires, brakes, spark plugs, and it just keeps going. I've been in 12 inch snows with no issues; running Toyo Open Country AT3's for past 50K; great tire. We will see what 6th Gen brings!
@@OnDownTheRoadProductionswhy are you getting salty? He's 100% correct....there are sedans making it through these slush covered roads as evident in your video 😂 You're talking this thing up like you're filming while driving off road in a foot of snow. A fwd with quality snow tires will make it through a decent snow storm. Don't get your ego hurt so bad next time someone calls out the facts in your video.
Hey Terry... Great Video!👍 Real Time, Proof Positive, 4Runner "Comes Alive..." (I just "asked" the Camero driver... Hah!) I'm the "Lucky Guy" that just bought the TRD Pro... I'm using your video to show my Wife and Daughter the driving capabilities of the 4Runner... and what to expect, "This is what Lake Tahoe will look like... when we're trying to go back home to San Francisco after skiing the weekend..." By the way... California Highway Patrol (CHP) would definitely Close the Road with those kind of road conditions... Mandatory tire chains tooo... except 4wheel drives like Our 4Runners... "When They Come Alive...!" San Francisco Chinatown to South Lake Tahoe, 376mi. round trip... approx. 60mi. round trip, possible snowy conditions... 4x4 w/o snow tires, chains required. Happy Trails...! Gung Fu Cowboy San Francisco Chinatown
Right on Gung Fo Cowboy 🤠 👍😎 our only recommendation is to run 89 octane for the fuel economy numb. Thank you for your kind words, great to have you here and have your enthusiasm/ encouragement. Save travels to Taho Terry Piper Theresa ODTRP
I took mine out early morning 2nd day of the storm before the plows started. You nailed it this car does "come alive" in this weather and tears through everything and stays steady. I have original all seasons(not snow tires) and it was still a beast(all in 4H of course). None of the other cars could compete and there were plenty of spin outs on the side of the road and having difficulty staying in a straight line. I love this "bank vault" of a truck. Fun video thanks
My eyes were wincing from the storm ⛈️ nailing my glasses and eyes at the video start lol. Thank you 😊 Edgie for your enthusiasm and kind video feedback👍😎. Great to have you and your support. You are correct pound for pound dollar for dollar 💵 there is nothing more versatile or capable than a 5th Gen 4Runner unless you grab a military vehicle lol. Cannot believe sometimes the push back on the Dunlop AT20 tires balanced with the best 4X4 system available this side of the moon. Be safe, go 4Runners 😊 Best Terry ODTRP
All you need is one bad experience in the snow to really start looking for a capable vehicle. This happened to me back in 2014 when I had my 2010 Mazda 6 and kept getting stuck in the snow on the way back home from work. I've had my 2016 4Runner Trail since June 2017 and it really shines in this type of weather. 188.5K miles and I have no regrets with my purchase. And yes, I too never cared about fuel economy haha. I'm keeping this bad boy till the wheels fall off. Well, probably frame rust is what will do my 4Runner in 🫠
On fuel economy it is only one part of the Total Ownership Cost of a vehicle. There are things we can do to increase 4Runner fuel economy like a TRD CAI, better octane, etc. you get it all back in resale, long life, no recalls
Bought a 2023 4Runner TRD ORP October 2023. Got rid of the Bridgestone Dueller HT tires, replaced all halogen bulbs with LED bulbs. We had our first 4 inch snowfall yesterday and it handled our errands with no issues. The KDSS is a big improvement over the 2016 SR5 Premium we traded. Thank you for your review. Cheers!
In the winter always put 4 bags of 50 LBs of salts on your trunk or keep the rear heavy when the roads are freezing and slippery you can use the salts on the roads too
How long do you plan on keeping your rig? I've watched quite a few of your videos but I can't remember if you talked about undercoatings at all. I have done Fluid Film on my rig since brand new have no rust. Much like Michigan, Wisconsin winters can be brutal. We just got about 17 inches of snow in my area.
This is a keeper, I saw the snow you got on the Waupaca Rail cam. It’s a keeper for life, 5th Gen 4Runners will go down in history as one of the greatest trucks ever made. Pretty sure 2024 is it. We have a video covering fluid flem called rust concerns. Great move on your rig to keep it rust free. Thanks Ian great to have your support and enthusiasm here. We are planning a Waupaca visit too. Best, ODTRP
The problem i had in WI was finding a shop that did lanolin under coatings. Thankfully asking around a few local garages gave me a contact of a small business that didn't come up on a google search.
Had some good amount of snowfall this past week in Toronto, took my 19 Limited out. An absolute beast for performance in such weather, but I definitely recommend getting some proper winter tires for extra control. ABS really works and helps in the snow with stopping, mostly due to my car being on all seasons. If you’re getting a 4Runner, make sure to have some proper tires too
The stock tires on my 2023 Limited are all seasons and they look like tires for a normal car. When they wear out I will buy some tires with more muscle in them.
Well . . . . . . I don't take my 2 - 4x4's out off roading. I know I can off road but have no interest in testing my vehicles. However . . . when inclamited weather arrives suddenly without warning I want the ability to "wade in deep water", "hop over the curb to drive around trouble", "do donuts in our cup-de-sac", "drive through heavy snow", " drive thru muddy terrain" anything out of the ordinary that can use 4x4 assistance. Love my wife's 4Runner and my FJ.
Right on Breeze! We owned 2 FJs and regret selling our first. Calvary Blue, White roof, no roof rack and the twelve speaker stereo system. We do plan on future Overlanding and will get a tent on the roof.
Hmmm thats not a snow storm…. I was in the blizzard in chicago last Friday.. Jan. 12. 24,, At 4 30 am… no snow plows.. winds blowing.. cant see the road.. country roads …i put the snow mode on my VW atlas.. worst than what u drove here.. But.. anyway…. I know the 4 runners are great!@ I am waiting for the next gen 4runner myself,,, thanks for the video!..
We got hit with that midwest blizzard a few weeks ago and we took the 4R out snow wheeling and I was impressed.. i was driving through 6-7 inches of fresh damp snow going over 40 mph with no issues.. Id be at an intersection and gun it from a full stop and it didnt even slip. Shes a beast.
I live in the Hill country of Texas. My 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD OR was brand new when the 2021 Polar vortex hit. We lost power but I had a generator but need fuel so every day I had to trip into town to find fuel. Tacoma did great. The 4Runner is a beast and a must buy. Be safe
I'm an owner of a 2010 Tacoma 4x2 PreRunner and I was caught in a similar storm on Jan. 16th in Utah. My truck has always done well but it definitely took some creative driving on my end to keep things moving and safe. Needless-to-say, I was uncomfortable and decided it was time for a change. Therefore I just ordered a 2024 4Runner ORP in the new Underground. LFG!
I have a 2022 ORP with many custom upgrades. I drove from NY to the Smoky mountains in Tenn. It was tropical storm type weather the whole ride. Not one issue in my 4 Runner cut through that storm like butter.
That was an epic journey indeed. Ours is a 2022 ORP as well. We are actually looking forward to motorcycling the Tennessee Smokey Mountains one day. The 4Runner has amazing capability.
I have a 2020 ORP since 2021 with a lift and tires. I live in the south and got our snowstorm about 5" couple weeks ago. The first time i got to use the 4runner in snow, drove like a Cadillac 😎. Only problem I had was my windshield washer fluid froze 😮. It got down around 10 degrees which is rare for us to get that cold even though it got colder. I had all season fluid that was good till 0 degree before freezing as it said on the bottle. This was Prestone brand. They lied, it was froze at 10 degrees. You talk about nervous for reservoir tank cracked or pump but all was good once thawed. I'm switching to -34 once I get this fluid out 😉
Great video. All you said about the 4Runner is so true. I have a 2007 4Runner with 167,537 miles on it and I have a 2019 4Runner with 43,000 miles. It's great in the snow and I also drive them on the beach. They are amazing. Thanks for your video !
Recently drove my son back to college during a snow storm in the 4Runner. It went 354 miles round trip with no issues whatsoever. The only other cars out there seemed to be full size pickups. Most F series.
Nice. I've driven the 4Runner (21 Venture), the Sequoia (19 Plat) and two different Tacomas (2nd Gen and 3rd Gen) in snow -- mostly on stock or mild all terrain 3 peak tires. In all cases, the 4Runner felt more planted, event with a load in the back of the Tacomas. The Sequoia was a close second. If you have a 4Runner and see this, don't trade it in, just keep it. If you are thinking about buying one, get one and match the tires to your needs. I miss mine enough to go buy another one, probably.
Have a 4th Gen 2008 SR5 and a 5th Gen 2023 Limited. I Love 4Runners but don't want to drive the 2023 Limited in the Crap Weather so I kept the 2008 SR5 for that reason.
I have a 22 sr5 4x4. I drove on an untreated dirt road after it snowed 6-8 inches and thing is a tank. The stock tires kind of sucked(replaced at 34k). They were good on road but pretty bad in weather or offroad. I got cooper discoverer all terrain on road(great tire). Not overly expensive. I looked into the bf goodrich and good years. My local tire shop guy who I graduated High school with is heavily into off roading. Told me I was wasting my money and these are perfect for your situation. He was right!
Test driving the Honda Goldwing in the storm would definitely be more interesting 😂. Just kidding. 😊 I put BFG KO2’s stock size on my 2023 TRD 4 Runner Off Road Premium it’s unstoppable. What idiot drives a Camaro in a blizzard? lol 😂
Unreal on the Camaro Roadglide 😂. We are one step ahead of you, just waiting for the 50 MPH winds and more ice 😅 the GOLDWING is already idling lol. The KO2’s make it even better nice. We are doing Mickey Thompson raised white letter off road tires maybe this year.
90,000 miles on my 2017. The only issue I have had was the front doors lock actuator stopped working. There’s several videos on here that show step by step how to replace the little motor inside the actuator. For $13 bucks I had both actuators fixed.
Unfortunately, if a person keeps driving the bank vault in the salt, it becomes swiss cheese, i wish they would just start sanding in winter & let us use studded tires in winter like they do in alaska. I will have my 24 trd off road premium soon
Hello from central OH! Love your 4Runner videos! One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention in their 4Runner videos is payload capacity. I don’t tow but I do have my vehicles loaded with people and gear, or landscaping supplies, a few times a year. What is the TRD ORP’s payload capacity? Do you think it’s the same, more, or less than an SR5 Premium? I know I can go to a dealership and look at door stickers for that info., but then I will have a dealership hounding me to buy one and I am still about 2 months away from that point right now. Thanks!
Thank you Matt! We appreciate you👍. Just woke up and will come back with numbers. All 4Runners should be the same as their drive times and chassis are identical. Your purchase timing is right on given the Mexico made 6th Gen Tacoma 4Runner coming. I will reply again to this today with numbers. Best Terry
Payload on 4Runners is pitiful around 880 I think. Enough for passengers and regular cargo but not great for towing. Load it down with people and overland racks and rtts and you’ll feel it.
@theoutdoordad7395 I second that. Idk the official numbers but I know the feel!! Towing gets much worse with a lift, 33” tires, no regear, loaded down with passengers and gear!! Just don’t even bother LOL
I'm ignorant to snow so please forgive me for asking a stupid question. How do you clean your 4runner after driving over treated snow on the road (salt)? Do you spray an undercoating or do a washout when you get home?
Pressure Wash it before the third day after otherwise once start becoming hard ice stock to surface and melting by it self it's the salt trying to make traction with the uncoated surface and component We live in Ohio salt is extreme over 14 years we moved from California i started the experiment with a cheap Junk a ford explorer's noticed over the time not rust was coming out once I stop from leaving them melt but it self to when I start washing the car every 3 days every time I hit the road while is winter and had ice road or snow
Are kidding there is barely a few inches unworthy for f the 4 Runner spectacles. First Michigan is not a state with much snow I lived there . Next please !
Always loved Toyota trucks. Bought a Brand New V8 4Runner Limited in 2005 and thought it would be my forever vehicle but there actually wasn’t enough head room for me, my head bumped the frame around the sunroof and there was a wheel vibration that they couldn’t correct. All that combined with the low mpg and I sold it in 2010. I did have a little fun with it like you are here. I really wished it would have worked out. I’ve since moved on to Acura vehicles. For the most part I see the styling of the 4Runner hasn’t changed much in 19 years, just updated tech.
Does the 4Runner have a 4W-Auto mode? Just curious as that's what I use most in my Yukon when in inclement weather, unless the roads are covered completely under a several inches of snow and/or ice.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductionsjust drove my 23 BRZ through a foot of snow in this last storm we had here in CT. It was a blast and surprised me. Passed a stuck wrangler.
Glad to see you're excited about your 4Runner, but this was like maybe 2 inches of snow. Every other car on the road also goes right through it easily. Make sure to powerwash your frame after driving on salted roads to avoid frame rot. I traded both of my 4Runners in because they both developed rusty frames that started to rot out.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions II true, it's not working. My cousin has a 2020 4Runner and his is already very rusty underneath. It starts as surface rust and gets worse and worse until the frame eventually rots out. There's a video out focusing on the new Tacoma and that Toyota went to great lengths to mitigate frame rust by eliminate pockets and moisture traps in the frame as well as better protection on the metal itself. So there's hope for the upcoming 6th generation 4Runner if it does in fact use the Tacoma's upgraded frame. But for the current 4Runners, they are still a mess and that's exactly what made me stop buying 4Runners.
Have a 22 sr5 premium 4x4 myself with the stock tires on her. They suck lol. Really just leaving them on to get my moneys worth, but they are truly terrible on ice and snow
The 4Runner is number one ☝️ due to world class 4X4 systems. It drives on stock tires like it had studs enjoy your Jeep with the Stellantis build quality and that Fiat V6. Apparently as the video shows we drove over tons of ice.
I own a 2023 4Runner TRD off road premium..Snow tires with studs make a big difference, especially when stopping..I have lived in western Montana all of my life and the best form of traction is the use of tire chains..Using the wrong tires will get you in trouble real fast..No need to get snarky..@@OnDownTheRoadProductions
My SR5 does just fine without the added hassle of studs (especially if you’re not living in a constantly icy snowy location)…but a solid winter tire certainly helps! Went into winter with worn mud tires slipping all over the place…New Mickey Baja Boss ATs are soooo solid in wet and snow👌🏽 tires definitely make the 4Runner better! I think stock TRD ORP are Duelers? If so, also not bad, ran those on my grocery-getter 4th gen 4Runner and loved them. Dope video dude!
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions yes, studded tires for ice under the snow is a god send, I look forward to driving around during snow storms! yeah 4Runners after tax here are 70k.. even for ones a few years old.
My local dealer only had new limited models maybe it was because of the ventilated seats. I tried a 5 year old SR5 w/cloth seats and it was fine. But yes the issue was with the seat bottom.
