I LOVED rock lord when I was a kid. The gold nugget was my favorite. This put an interesting spin on the scene from Big where he questions the antagonist about his building transformer by saying "what kid would want to play with a building?" And I reply "I played with ROCK robots, you know nothing doofus!"
It's a shame that Hasbro forced the Vehicle modes on their new incarnations. I would've loved if we could've had a line of "Weaponisers" who could become terrain pieces for one's battle scene!
Isn't it just me, or does Bolder look like "What if Cosmos, was a rock". Also where is Repugnus? This video number of bad puns, would drive this little bigger NUTS 3:24 😉😁
In all fairness though, Frank Welker voiced 72% of all animated English language characters between the ‘60s and present day (despite a solid proportion of those characters not actually speaking any human language)
Terra-Roc and Spike Stone are rad as hell because they don't transform from rocks to weird rock men, they transform from rocks to ROCK DINOSAURS with inlaid bones and are the coolest shit you've ever seen (maybe). There's also a combiner called Fossilsaurus where a gaggle of strange stone lads combine into a kaiju with oddly technological accessories, but he was both Japan only and is very, very expense to get nowadays.
i was lucky to find ol’ welker n’ cullen in a thrift store near my home, i think the store knew to expect a schmuck like me to show up and buy them because they were in the cabinet with the fancy stuff and the videogames with their own price tag. at another store of the same brand i found hound and swindle just laying on the ground, yet someone at this store knew to put some respect on the rock lords.
3:10 I love how the chipped paint makes Brimstone's teeth look bloodstained. Just chipped paint. Right? 4:29 Who came first, Sticks N' Stones or Rack N' Ruin?
i picked up sticks n stones at a toy show semi recently and immediately fell in love with the little idiot. honestly enough to potentially send me down a future rabbit hole
A absolutely loved these boys as a kid and I had Granite while my brother had Boulder. They have a lovely glossy sheen and I always loved them going up against my Decepticons where they simply turned into the rock forms and bashed the cons like bowling pins. I would have loved to get the two dinosaur style Rocklords... The Rockosaurs; Terra-Roc & Spikestone. Seriously good times with these lads and thrilled to see you cover them Gav! :)
I recently stumbled across a fanzine on Rock Lords you'd contributed to some years ago, and had a barrel of laughs with it, especially the fun facts about Rock Lords! I think they're great, I mean, who needs 80s toys that turn in to vehicles when you can have them change into gravel for your garden! Wonderful!!!
Absolutely love Rocklords, the absolute definition of a bad idea executed beautifully. They're just so chunky and satisfying to fiddle with, and I love me a fun bot that just turns into a lump of something or a shape or a rock, there's something so charming about it and the engineering always gets interesting as a result. Great vid as usual.
An added bonus to the colorful rock-forms, is that they'll look very decorative all gathered up in fancy bowl or basket for display. I'm looking at pictures of the toyline right now. Those chromed metallic ones would be a lovely addition to your collection.
So fond of these adorable little chunks of stupidity. I have most of them, and these six are the most basic. So any more you get from here will likely pleasantly exceed your expectations. Nuggit is my favorite. The two rock beasts also have very enjoyable chunky hand-feel. I have no bloody idea what possessed them to make the Narlies.
I had Sticks n' Stones at one time, I believe, as well as maybe a couple of others. I distinctly remember the legs feeling like they were going to either pop off or somehow injure my fingers. I really wish they'd bring them back, and not as weaponizers but actual Rock Lords. Really good to play with, and goes good with other figures. Much like me in the secret TFNation hot tub.
I had Tombstone and Silverstone (second wave figures), and I loved them! Back in the mid eighties, transforming toys were such a novelty that we didn't care what they changed into.
I had these as a kid and my mom sent over some of my old toys for my youngest son. I now display the 2 that my kids have, I need them all now LOL. I am a big 42 year old kid LOL
I owned a Rock Lord as a kid (Boulder) and some of those meteor animals and rock people from Masters, too. I was always a bit embarrassed until I recently discovered Transformers that turn into cubes. Literal cubes. That’s the best we can do in the 2020’s? I’ll take my rocks, thank you.
The Rock Lords were an interesting part of toy history of the 80's. Kinda makes me wish they actually did come back with reissues of the toys if not modern updates
the return of the TF nation hot tub mentions!! cant wait until we get enough lore of the tub that someone makes a video documenting all of them so we can piece together each years 'tubbing events.
The barber shop i grew up going to had toys for kids to play with while they waited for their haircuts, and Granite was one of them. Always thought he kinda looked like Rhinox.
I think I have a couple of those rolling around the bottom of my box of childhood Transformers. I had the gold one and a green one with a snake head. I remember as a kid being at an absolute loss as to how to play with them.
Really do need to pick some Rock Lords up. Had 3 or 4 of them as a kid but I think they ended up being given away when I moved house. Had that crystal lady one and a chromed silver lad.
I have two of them and am SO HAPPY to see you review them. I mean yeh they are as fun as rocks would be lol they have some clear versions I was looking at the expensive! Love it and that the hot tub joke 😂 got me
What about Nugget? He was a wee lump of gold that turned into a robot (face had shades of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit), and was surprisingly wel articulated. He even had a wee jet pack come out his back. I think there was a silver bad guy equivalent, but I could just be misremembering that part.
Still have Granite and Slimestone out and about!!!! Lost my Tombstone but always, I don't know why, used to pull out just the head to pretend it was an asthma inhaler. Kids. I don't get them. Or me.
You can laugh at me if you want to. But as a kid, I genuinely wanted Brimstone. I can agree that the rock mode was by far the worse of the Rock Lords. However, Brimstone had the right kind of 1980s menace and goofy in robot mode only found in him and Saw Boss of the Wheeled Warriors. Even decades later, I still think that little red rock goblin is cool.
Imagine these things in the walls or terrain of GI Joe/Transformers/MASK playsets. Waiting to jump the enemy like the Viet Cong! "They're coming out of the walls! Literally!"
I ask you, what is Optimus without Megatron? What is Karl Marx without Jeff Bezos? What is Gavin Spence without his comments section going "Blub blub blub BUT GAVIN!"?
There are fun and better than the two meteorite dudes from the world of He-Man and She-Ra. But hey I read something wild recently on TF Wiki... "In a very early draft of The Transformers The Movie, Lithone was a planet of living rock creatures (explaining its name, from the Ancient Greek for stone, lithos)." How crazy is that? That linguistic connection never occurred to me. In a parallel universe we TF fans could have had our own transforming rocks and been all "Lithons are _so_ much better than Rock Lords so there!"
I don't much care for the rock lords, my main concern is if we'll ever hear about the secret TF Nation hot tub again after what I can only assume is the joke's logical conclusion.
I think I had Marbles, though I had forgotten his dweeby face. Honestly I kind of like these. Something satisfying about just transforming into a big lump. Oh, and Solitaire. Nice joints there, even if her diamond rock form is basically sitting very still and hoping you don't see her. Allegedly there were shows to go with these??
Do you think they thought kids were going to incorporate rock lords with tonka construction vehicles? Cause that's the only reason i would think they thought these would succeed.
Wait, what happened to my all Voltron all the time channel? Why, if I were even mildly motivated I would write a stern letter to TRDQ management. Fortunately for you, I'm actually not even sure what I was upset about at this point and also sleepy sleepy time.
"I could watch new toys, stolen from Vietnamese factories"? Iiiii... have no idea what hes talking about guys, Gavin has lost his mind. There's absolutely no such thing happening in the tf community for years now.
Everyone in the hot tub is now dead thanks to Gavin. Every year the fatalities increase. My Uncle who works at TFNation told me it's ture and he would never lie to me.
I have to admit, I had a LOT of Go-Bots and all of the rock lords.... Thanks as always, Gavin!!! *edit* Okay after watching I realize that I didn't own Nut-Sack head...
