Tread was the first ever feature length mountain bike film starring Hans Rey and Greg Herbold as well as many riders from the golden era of mountain biking. This classic cult film, by many considered the 'Endless Summer' of mountain biking, gives a great perspective of the state and cultures of MTB in 1993. Filmed on 16mm film at locations all over the world, produced and directed by Bill Snider / Oak Creek Films.

This is so cool. I was literally joking with my dad yesterday about how you can find anything on RU-vid. My dad did a basement remodel several years ago an got rid of all our VHS tapes. Tread was among them. I was so into mountain biking in the early 90's. Lived it really. I still love biking but those years 88-95 or so where such a great time to be a mountain biker.

In 2000 I saw this video for the first time at friend’s house. Thanks to you and Greg Herbold this is what started my love affair with mountain bikes. It wasn’t until 2003 I got my first real mountain bike (titanium grey colored Trek 6000) that I saved up for all summer. 20+ years later, the bikes changed, the trails have changed, and the gear is better but this is still the ultimate road trip that I’ve been trying to copy all these years. I’ve ridden in some really cool places and next year am planning an Epic Colorado mountain trip over the continental divided looking to capture that awesome vibe in this movie.

Totally love this video. I remember when Greg Herbold would stop by a hobbyshop where I worked part time and he would give me stuff from Rock Shox and Onza when he was in town. I always helped him find his rc car parts cause the shop (Sheldon's Hobbies in San Jose, Ca.) had almost every part available for his cars he owned. It was pretty cool seeing him go behind the counter and just pick out his parts like he worked there. Super cool cat Greg was and probably is today.

Maybe just my sound system, but I tried it on both speakers and then headphones and it is there on both paths a crackling distraction. Tolerable, but would be so much better w/o.

The 90's were awesome for mountain biking. I worked in a bike shop at the time. It seemed like every week something new was being developed. Some of it was great, some of it was terrible.

I loved this movie! And I love all these comments! Yes to everything! Disk wheels! Skin suits! Piranha necklaces! Epic hair! Yeti team colours! Aluminium! Dave's Chain Device! Manitou rear suspension! Hippity hoppity over the rocks! This was the age of legends and heroes. This is where it all got real. Thanks for sharing. I've been dying to hear the insano opera song again.

So happy I’m able to watch this movie again. This was the first time I saw a mountain bike adventure and instantly I knew it was going to be my favorite sport lifestyle. Since then I never stopped riding. I was able to get my first ride with Hans last year at the Sedona bike fest. What a thrilling experience.

I bought this movie when it came out, shortly after I moved to Seattle, and watched it SO MANY times. My girlfriend and I went to NORBA nationals when it was in Spokane and were lucky enough to see Hans Rey ride, and he even signed her shirt, which she didn’t stop grinning about for what seemed like weeks. Thanks for posting this movie, can’t wait to rewatch it after all this time!

59:36 I know exactly where this is, Plan d'Aiguille, Chamonix, they won't let you take bikes up there any more. A bit later it looks like you're about to ride down the Aiguille Du Midi arete which I'd bet my house you didn't ride as its guaranteed death if you lose traction and you can't ride down from there anyway, it's just unpisted snow and ice with 100m deep crevasses waiting to swallow you up.

The first time I rode Poison Spider Mesa - right when that aerial shot ended at the beginning of Tread, I locked up my front tire - the bike went left and I went right - THANK GOD - and although all was well, I should have been wearing my brown shorts that day. LOL Total inspiration from Hans and Greg! I I wore my VHS copy out. Thank you, Hans!
