Your tires are one of the most crucial components of the vehicle when it comes to safety, performance, and consistency. If you can read tread wear patterns, you can learn a lot about what may be going wrong with your vehicle's ability to maintain contact with the road, and possibly save yourself some expensive repair bills down the road!

This video discusses the basics of tire wear, including what happens when the tire is overinflated, underinflated, when there is too much camber, what causes feathering, and more! You will learn about tire tread wear indicators; in another video we will talk about the tread wear penny test and why it isn't the most accurate measurement system (this is why the tread wear penny test isn't used in this video). The tread wear indicator on tires themselves are a better way to determine if a tire is worn out; the manufacturer knows their tires better than the US mint.
Too much negative camber will cause excessive wear on the side of the tread that is on the side of the tire closer to the middle of the car. Want to learn more about camber? Check out our page with more information and videos: carssimplified.com/camber.php
A tire tread wear pattern can change over time, especially if the problem causing the initial issue is caught early on and fixed, especially camber wear or tire pressure wear.

A tread wear indicator is located in the tire tread itself, usually in multiple places so that uneven wear isn't missed.
NOTE:
Remember, if you're not sure about something, seek help from a professional! Tyres are vital to safety and if there is a problem that is improperly diagnosed or not noticed at all, it can affect vehicle behavior, stopping distance, handling, and can even cause a blowout.

Great explanation as usual! In the 50 years I have owned cars, I have never had any uneven tire wear because I have always made sure my alignment was spot on and checked my air pressure in the tires once a month and rotated the tires around 6K miles. Once in the late 70's my wife's Scirocco had a bulge her Continental tire front drivers side so it made a slight pull off and on to the left. I had her drive slowly and as I observed her approaching me I could see that the tire, had a steel belt or belts that had slipped. About a fist size in the tread area. Tires were getting older and about 30K miles so time for new ones! Only time I ever had that situation! As you know many people drive around with under inflated tires especially in the winter when they tend to lose pressure when it turns colder. I just shake my head since it is so obvious!

Thanks! Impressive track record with the even tire wear! I've never encountered a steel belt slip so far. Definitely good to look out for that, though!
