I know! I loved Wincey on Treasure Hunt when I was a kid in the 80s - loved watching her mapping the route with the arrows and wearing that huge headset with the orange mic! She had a more prominent role in series 7, if I remember, practically co-hosting with Kenneth. Kenneth could be so grumpy, couldn't he - he used to get cross with the constestants! Wincey was always smiling and laughing though :-)
Great programme, Great theme tune, and topped off with the gorgeous Anneka Rice! The principal of the show was just so simple and that's why it was so successful!
Thank you so much for a great little montage, I didn't realise it went to 7 series, I hope Annabel didn't think she killed it, but I suppose the end was nigh anyway and 7 seasons is long way to go in the Uk. It's difficult to explain to kids of today how impossibly exciting and new this was and as a child at the time, even though I didn't have any idea what the mind bending clues meant, it was one of my top shows of the week. Exciting, classy, intelligent, entertaining, informative & funny, nothing will ever come to close to matching Treasure Hunt and with Anneka & Kenneth it was a little gem of it's time, never to be repeated.
When you look at the titles and remember how this was made,it was quite groundbreaking at the time... Played "as live",it still makes travelling by Helicopter look SO exciting! All that,a brilliant Zack Lawrence theme, and Kenneth Kendall.....ace.
I used to watch this with my parents when I was a child, it was the one show that was "Event telly" in our house, out came the maps and we tried to solve the clues before the contestants! Happy days.
Loved this show when I was a kid. Anneka was great but I was prob a bit young to notice her charms back then. However Annabel was a great 'inspiration' to me as a lad ;) Those catsuits she wore were awesome.
I think Wincey does local radio in the midlands somewhere now. Google her and you'll get the webpage and a few pics. She's well into her 60s now. Hard to believe, but she was in her 40s when she did Treasure Hunt.
This was probably my favourite show growing up in the 80's. I'd have been 10.5 when it started, theme tune still sounds amazing today and instantly takes you back. Anneka Rice and lots of helicopter action, what more could a boy want! I'm guessing possibly the same people did the titles as for Tripods on BBC, looks like same 3D style font and effects, especially as you get to S5
This really was original and innovative programming from Channel Four. They would probably never get the go-ahead to do it now, as the stunts became increasingly elaborate towards the end and you would watch it wondering whether Anneka Rice might actually die this week
I heard that Treasure Hunt got cancelled after the Annabel Croft series for series 7. Chatsworth said that the stunts required by the presenter proved to be dangerous. Or was is that they couldn't decide who to bring back as sky runner for series 8 in 1990, Anneka or Annabel...? The ratings were good for Chanel 4 back then it was around the 7 + million mark. Treasure hunt was amazing. How they did it with that kind of technology back then was amazing. You can do the whole Treasure Hunt now with a mobile phone.
Nobody will throw down the money and take a risk anymore. Channel 4 hasn't had a single innovation since Big Brother, way back in 2000. It's increasingly shoring up its schedule by dredging up past glories, but they won't even spend on those. The recent Crystal Maze revival was probably the most embarrassingly cheap affair ever seen. The stunts in Treasure Hunt probably did get out of hand. But it didn't need that danger element, it worked every bit as well just having Anneka run around a castle, or row a boat. They pulled some extremely dangerous stunts in later years, the standout one being Anneka precariously shimmering around the side of a surfaced submarine out at sea with no safety line or anything.
The Crystal Maze was in the maze built in London as an experience for regular people. The original was camp and kitsch, the one off special was as well, contained the right elements of audience frustration and player fails. Maureen Lipman was a great Mumsy too.
I can forgive them not building a massive set like the original just for a one-off, but it did look poor. If it goes into a full series then I can't excuse them not building a set at least half the size of the old one at bare minimum. I just didn't like the tone of the revival show though. It was too disregarding of the fantasy aspect, it wasn't played as an adventure it was played as a TV game show with too many real world references. Referring to its own existence on TV, to Stephen Merchant's real life and lots of little bugbears like that ruined it. Maureen Lipman played a decent Mumsy impersonation, I'll give her that. But there's only one Mumsy. I just didn't like it, in a nutshell.
Brilliant show on Channel.4 with sights of Anneka then Annabel jumping out of the helicopter .Completely ruined when BBC2 revived it a few years later.
Yes a great show. The forerunner to interceptor etc with the use of helecopters. Kenneth the former BBC newsreader, Anneka, who was newish to tv, and Wincey who was a tvam weather forcaster. Later with annabel croft the former tennis player.
Ah, great show, the 80's had it fashion disasters!! And the BIG packs Annie had to wear, god love her. Where as today it's all nearly as small as a cigy packet!!
used to love this on channel 4 and then later on Family/ChallengeTV. Wish someone would upload some episodes like someone has with Crystal Maze! I only have about 4 episodes of the 2002 series. Unfortunately missed the second series with Suzy Perry.
Treasure Hunt really hit its stride from series 3 onwards when wincey joined. She was the final piece of the jigsaw. From series 3 onwards the communications and sound improved. Not like the sound from series 1 and 2. Anneka was given the windsock on her mic from series 3 onwards maybe that's why the sound was better. I liked from series 5,6 and 7 the comms pack changed to the smaller light pack.
+Stephen O'Donnell Yes. That was Annette Lynton. Kenneth used to called her Nettie. She was adjudicator for series 2. She was very reserved never really spoke or interact with Kenneth, Anneka or the contestants. She used to give some evil looks to Kenneth. In one show in the Birmingham episode, she looked contestant Harriet Llwelyn up and down at her towards the end of the show. Wincey Willis was the final piece of the jigsaw when she joined in series 3. She was more livelier chatty and funny.
Yes. She seemed quirky and approachable. Maybe it was partly her funny sounding name. I once watched a documentary about Breakfast Television during the 80s and Wincey Willis, who as you know presented the weather on TV-am, said that she often received very bizarre fan-mail. 'My secretary opened an envelope and it was full of pubic hair.'
Yes, she was very much a background character, I think, and was older than her successor Wincey Willis. I think Wincey had an extrovert, bubbly personality and loved interacting and giggling with the participants. This probably led her to be promoted to co-host in Series 7 :)
Why did the BBC try to revive a great Channel 4 programme? This should be brought back by Channel 4 but using modern technology! The Internet! The best opening sequence of any TV programme and the music was superb!
yeah think it was the last series of it as well. Used to love watching this, wish they would bring it back it's far better than the crappy quiz shows they have now
Thanks so much. Do you have the opening titles from the Suzi Perry series in 2002/2003? The music is trying desperately not to be the original, but isn't quite as good.
Can you imagine trying to do that now with the helicopters at least. Budget (commercial TV budgets are a fraction of what they were in the 80s), health and safety and CAA regulations would just make it a non starter not to mention the "carbon footprint" implications of hareing around in 2 Bell Jetrangers for larks.
How come all the series and episodes I remember were all in the UK, I don't remember any in forign places. I know I was watching them on Channel 4 and not The Family Channel.
BBC did do a series of it a few years ago with Suzi Perry as the skyrunner but was no where near as good and was dropped after two series. Perhaps channel 4 should try it again perhaps with Mo Farah as the sky runner?
@@kevinstephenson4674 In that case forget it. I can't take another celebrity editions of things with vacuous non-enterties of never have beens desperate to get noticed.
Treasure Hunt A Second Look AKA The best of Treasure Hunt in this episode Kenneth took to the helicopter to introduce clips from the 1st series whilst Anneka had to put up with being in a hot and stuffy studio Ann Meo was adjudicator she was only given a walk on part she wrote the clues for this series as well as the questions for Blockbusters
Did any body like Annette lynton? She was the adjudicator in series 2. I wonder what brand of computer she used in series 2...? She always used to presumably type at her keyboard and in an episode Kenneth said "nettie do you know where Annie is" she replies "yes she's nearly at the pits" how did she know this? Was her computer connected to something? There was no Internet back then was there?
Why series 8 didn't happen was because chatsworth tv and channel 4 said the stunts required by the presenter proved to be too dangerous. Do you guys believe that? Maybe Anneka did want to come back after giving birth but Annabel wanted to stay and take over Anneka full time? Maybe they were both fighting on who is gonna be sky runner...?
+Ravinder2220 to be honest i wasnt at all impressed by annabel when i watched it and wanted Anneka back, maybe because the season took a nose dive in ratings with her as skyrunner
+engelskmann2011 Was it in the papers that season 7 was going to be the last Treasure Hunt? I was about 4 years old when the Annabel Croft season first broadcast on channel 4. I didn't watch Treasure Hunt originally as I wasn't born until 1986. I started watching on the Family Channel in the mid 90s. Now Challenge TV. Annabel did a good job but it wasn't the same without Anneka. I also read that Anneka was due to come back in 1990 for season 8. But it never happened.
same, i remember watching it when i was 2 in 1988, by what i remembered plus my parents enjoying it and then dropping it by the 2nd-3rd episode of annabel constantly saying that it's not the same without anneka.
Annette appeared in Crossroads as a receptionist in the 1970s. I've seen her in some episodes on DVDs, and her character is required to pull dirty faces and sulk... maybe she's not acting at all!
@Knappa22 well that depends wether you like bikinis or wet T-shirts Anneka would be great in the bikinis and Annabel in a wet t-shirt but as for the reasant Tresure Hunt sky runner god what was her now? was Ridercroft or Rider-Richardson well what ever is she be great as wonder woman
