I think this should have been in the movie. For one thing, it would help us understand a little better how Jim's been failing to cope without his father around.
A year after watching this, it didn't hit me until just now. It's significant how Jim watches the kid's father help him fix his scooter, because it embodies what Jim's always wanted but never had: a father to spend time with. This would've made the climax of the movie so meaningful, when Silver helped Jim create that makeshift hover-board. It would've made a nice call-back to this scene, how Jim found a father figure in Silver.
We didn't really need it though. The final cut of the movie already did a fantastic job showing both how upset Jim was about his dad running out on him when he was a kid and how Silver had basically become a second father to him.
This deleted scene is kind of sad... but not nearly as sad as the fact that there was going to be another whole movie AND an animated series, that both got canceled because apparently, the movie wasn't as well received as it deserved to be. We could have had SO MUCH MORE of this! This perfect steampunk-esque space adventure! I think I'll take a space ship to another planet now :(
i think they probably didn't use it because they thought it was too long and/or the fact that Ethan's dad suddenly appears out of nowhere. but it is a great scene. :)
That's sad. Jim envies Ethan because he has his father whereas he himself does not. He was not able to build the relationship that Ethan and his father have. And that was painful for him.
I wish they could have kept this scene in the movie. I love Treasure Planet of what it is, but this really shows how bad it was for Jim to never have a father to be there for him in his life. And it made me so sad and I felt really bad for Jim. :(
Movie is already rich when it comes to story telling, complex emotions and messeage. And it still could gain more with this scene. The thing that this got so little exposure is buggling me, despite it's dated visuals, it beats most of the top productions. My favourite tale among titles such as Mulan or Hercules.
I really wish they kept this scene in, it adds a bit more depth to Jim, and relatability (because this has happened to many people irl). It literally made me cry
I like this scene, it's kind of short but I think it actually adds a little extra touch to the scene. I think Jim seeing that kid hanging out with his dad gives a little hint that his dad isn't around anymore before we actually have it confirmed by his mom in the next scene where she's talking to Dr. Doppler about it. It's a good example of "show, don't tell" filmmaking and I kind of wish they had left it in the film.

Ethan sounds like Koda!! This scene is so sweet. It foreshadows that he's a nice, smart kid but just rather discouraged and "whatever", and it also hints that it has something to do with his dad. I think they should have kept that scene. Then again, I don't want them to get rid of the exciting opening that made it into the movie.
Haha. Love Jim's face when he's trying to get the sail to open. This was a cute scene. My favorite was the hidden on at the end of the "find the map" game. Much shorter, but I die laughing watching it.
@nddlj this is before the police takes it away. this scene was based on an alternate beginning, without lil' jim and the story book - and so also without that transformation scene, showing him riding the solar surfer 12 years later. this is before the solar surfer ride starts.
I think they should've left it in because it shows three things about Jim: A) He longs for a dad and feels sad when he sees the kid with his father. B) Based on how the dad looked at Jim and was abrupt with him, he is not well liked by the people of his planet. C) Jim is kind hearted even though he has a rough exterior.
@DutchAngua As I remember it, it's an extended version of Doppler and Sarah talking. It happens right after Billy Bones's crash. Sarah tells Doppler about how she keeps thinking Jim will show up with a random pet, begging her to let him keep it. Just then the door opens to Jim carrying Bones. Doppler takes one look at them and the looks at Sarah and asks, totally serious: "In the dream, was the pet dead?" (forgive me if I'm remembering it wrong)
I've seen it.^^ I also have the complete DVD and explored it right as I got it in my 12th birthday? Dunno, but was a while ago. Poor Jim... Love him!!! XD Thank you for the upload missy!^^
wow that would've been good if they had actually put it in the movie it would set a good base on how his father is never around or if his mom and dad are split up or something.
OMIGOSH this movie might have been more loved (they say treasure planet is one of the most hated disney movies) if they had JUST PUT THIS SCENE!! *dies*
I'm glad they cut it out. It's very clear in teh movie that Jim misses his dead; this would just be overkill, slapping us in the face with it. Eh, I still think they did, but this would've been worse. :p Still, CUTE scene. and fun. :p
omg :'( suuuuper cute but that would've been so sad for jim :( i guess it's nice they left it out. i could barely handle the little flashbacks they put in the "i'm still here" montage :((
Why does Jim's voice sound deeper here? Is it the same actor? I remember this scene when i had the original dvd [its broken now, someone stepped on it ;( I was eight I think. Is it the only scene? I'd love to see more, Jim is the first real modern day troubled-teen Disney evr did and I LOVE HIM!
