Their romance was so much fun because it didn’t feel forced. He’s actually likable and just a strong enough individual to counteract her usual domineering nature without being overbearing himself.
Sadly, I do not have a lot to offer anatomically OR academically. Probably why I don’t have a girl and dr Doppler does. You don’t HAVE to have both like Doppler does, but you DO have to have at least one or you’re up the creek
Even better because,I bet you get mind is 100% fine, and she's just telling him something she's thought for a while, but didn't want to say because of her image.
I like how they didn't make her a stereotype. Based on that intro they could have made her a typical, cold military type, but in the very same scene she displays humor and an openness towards new people.
It also has a lot to do with the way Emma Thompson brings the character to life. Emma Thompson has that unique type of dramatic style, which for this character, she presents a very arrogant but genuine character you fall in love with.
I didn't really realize how much of a great female character Amelia was. She's strong, confident, skilled but she isn't overbearing or overdomineering. She uses her authority when it is necessary, she listens to advices, and she gives credits where credit is due. Like that scene where Delbert was praising her skills and she dismissed it because she stated how Delbert's expertise with astronomy was actually a huge help.
modern media seems to have forgotten how to write good characters. they confuse strength with being a bitch or an asshole. they think confidence = arrogance. i actually work on ships and amelia is a captain i would feel safe serving under.
@@DoubleGlock45 Exactly. They think a strong female character is one that dominates, hates, or belittles men. Like you said too, Amelia is one of the few captains who I will absolutely trust my life to. It sucks so much this movie didn't get the recognition it deserved upon its initial release.
@@DoubleGlock45 You're spot on, I always loathe how the female love interest start out being a total cunt who over the course of the move learns the value of not always being a cunt. In this case Amelia is open to Doppler from the start, despite having an issue with the crew he picked she realises that he has a lot to offer during emergencies. She tries to brush off her injuries to appear strong but listens to him when he tells her not to overexert herself.
Captain Amelia is everything that Holdo in The Last Jedi was supposed to be. Just making a female a massive jerkass who belittles her subordinates doesn’t make her “empowered” or a good leader. This movie got it right, and more should follow Captain Amelia’s example. Kida from Atlantis the Lost Empire is another one. She’s a strong female lead with a well-developed character without the movie having to shove it in our faces. A good leader doesn’t need to constantly prove how ultra tough and hard-nosed they are.
@@DoubleGlock45 well said, no one knows how to make a strong female character anymore, I read this article talking about bossiness being a sign of leadership in young women, what a load of shit, being bossy doesn’t mean you’re a good leader. But thank you for your comment!
It still bugs me how criminally underrated this movie was when it came out. Also, Captain Amelia is THE template for how to make a good strong female supporting character.
@@michaelbread5906 Yes he is. Ambitious, brave and take no crap from anyone. That’s a strong male in my book. Sure his main role is to be a funny supporting character but he can be strong too.
Also, when I was a kid, the minute she did flips on the ship, I knew I loved her character and just didn't know why. Probably didn't learn enough adjectives to express it at the time lol
As a kid, I thought she was mean in the beginning of the film but, rewatching it, she never really was. She was just very outgoing and very confident; wasn’t the best at settling herself down when she interacted with others. She was never downright mean
She came off a bit strong, perhaps a little arrogant and occasionally demeaning at times, but you are absolutely right. Overall, she was a very competent, confident individual, and people respected her for it.
@@MoldyMcdonut Anime has also lost the magic of rich Storytelling and settle for panning on 4 frame static shots as much as possible. What OP means, is western 2D animation that has been replaced by 3D in biggest animation companies with their best animators retired. The last of 2D I've ever seen these late years would be "Claus". Which is 2D on top of 3D models.
Dr. Doppler is actually a caring, smart individual who just has poor body movement and coordination and a bit inexperienced on the field. the man is quick witted despite his book smart portrayal and the movie showcases his character very well. And I think it is this quick witted similarity that the interaction between these two characters was believable and beloved by fans of the movie
I feel it is a character moment for her. In the beginning, she was stern and cold and never allowed herself to be vulnerable. But after she got shot, she had to rely on others for the first time in years. She drew from that and learned that accepting help is not a sign of weakness and she became warmer as a result. As is conveyed by her becoming a mother showing affection for her child. It amazes me that the critics were more impressed with the visuals than the characters. Jim, Silver and Amelia are among the most, if not THE most, emotionally complex characters in all Disney.
@@sarahelroub1800 Frankly, I've never understood why Disney thinks romance is bad nowadays. During the Disney Renaissance, they planted seeds in the minds of youngsters healthy tips that would be useful once kids get older. Like how Beauty and the Beast taught girls to make boys earn their affection. Or when Aladdin taught boys that honesty is the best way to impress a girl. But now they seem to think that having a perfect career or a position of power is more important than companionship. Like in that new Peter Pan remake. They showed that Wendy will die childless and alone and framed it as a desirable fate because she had a successful career. And don't get me started on how Disney now thinks that being wisked away by a handsome man is degrading to women. Last time I checked, it was a common woman's fantasy.
5:30 I love how the blond haired baby is smiling at her brother getting the rattle and not her sister. She’s like, ‘That’ll teach you for being a bully!’ 😂
I have a feeling the sister and brother will have a very competitive sibling rivalry. My head canon is that the son will be a great captain/admiral like his mother, while the sister will be a very skilled military medic to follow her dad's footsteps
What I love most about this couple is how they compliment each other without being total archetypes or caricatures Amelia has, at first glance, the tired old "badass action girl who can do anything a man can do, but better" vibe, yet her being authoritative and confident in her abilities works, as she's responsible for a whole ass ship. She wouldn't be in the position she's in unless she actually was a capable commander. Furthermore, she's not shown to be some flawless masterclass individual and actually takes advice from other competent characters in the movie without coming off as inept in the process. She's the lead in her own story, but she still needs support. It's very human Doppler can sometimes get played for the bumbling moron (and the movie does do this a tad too much, imo), but he's still a brilliant doctor who shows his worth throughout the movie many times in subtle ways. Even in those moments where he seems to fall backwards into success, it's not other characters like Amelia or Jim pointing out he had a moment of genius, he realizes and utilizes it himself. In any other movie, he would've been an idiot after he accidentally freed his bindings until another, smarter character figured it out for him and said something.. but no, he immediately recognized what he had done and took initiative. He surprises himself at what a great marksman he is as well. They work together because they're opposites who make up for each other's weaknesses. The confident strategist with a bullishness to her and the brilliant doctor who lacks confidence until dire circumstances show just what he's capable of. The different kinds of intellect they have and the different levels of confidence make them a great team that doesn't step on the toes of the other and yet they're BOTH still fantastic as individuals as well. Fantastic dynamic between two awesome characters who complement each other so well
One of my favorite bits was the "did you actually aim for that?" But because as a kid I always thought he was bluffing when he said he did. After all he is goofy and comes off as clumsy and a screw up. As o got older I paid attention to the scene and he really does. You see him notice that they are being overwhelmed, look up and see the big thing and carefully aim, never taking his one eye off his target. And I love that she doesn't dismiss him afterwords, Amelia immediately trusts Delberts aim and tells him to shoot a thin cable that is holding the ling boat in place while she shoots the other. One of my all time fav couples
Exactly what I thought!! She believes him when he tells her he aimed for that and as proof of that he gives him an important task based on the assumption he can aim immediately afterwards!
These two were just perfect! The way they bounced off of each other, how he softened her up while she gave him confidence, Emma Thompson and David Hyde Pierce's performances, it just worked.
You know, while I was watching this movie just now, I thought: “huh, this is giving me serious Felix and Calhoun vibes right now”. It could be that the Felix and Calhoun pairing was even inspired (consciously or not) by Amelia and Doppler in Treasure Planet.
Don’t know why but Dr.Doppler reaction animation 1:06 has always stayed with me ever since I first saw the movie. Probably bc it so human. The movie is a masterpiece and deserves more recognition
This dialogue and their animated reactions to one another is so top-notch. Really how Disney films should do romance in my opinion; fun and a collateral of the plot instead of making it the focus.
Their energy was fantastic, disney is missing out on such an opportunity by not expanding on this universe. On another note, I can't believe I never picked up on her pointing out that the crew on her ship wasn't actually her own, it was one that he picked out, and that's why they were so mutinous. I wish kids were able to pick up on more of those details, or at least I was able to lol
I always noticed that...but freely admit that might be from watching Muppet's treasure island previously where it is made VERY clear the crew was a bunch of pirates hired by the financer NOT the captain
Absolutely, this universe has potential to be similarly expansive as Ratchet and Clank because it leans into the very same kind of Sci-Fi. You can do so much with this if they only wanted to. I still hope that someday someone at Disney will take up the old Treasure Planet 2 concepts and continue the series.
It's a good thing for those of us in the D&D/TTRPG circles that Spelljammer/Starfinder (and other space-based systems) exists, and that the newest iteration is coming around this year
I love how soft they make her look when she’s a mom and she’s holding her baby boy. Just so loving and gentle as she’s smiling. You can’t draw motherhood better than that.
Considering Disney almost had Doppler be the one giving birth, it gives a whole new layer to her plugging his suit in and the “I’ll do my own plugging thank you” line 💀
What do you mean DOPPLER was supposed to be the one pregnant?! The males of his race are the ones that gives birth???? I thought it would make sense for Ameila to be the one pregnant (Considering, females are built for it, even in animals and Doppler is supposed to be based off a dog) and they had four kids all a once, a litter. Cats, which is what Ameila is based off of, birth litters of around 4 or more. Or less. That's .. funny to think about, about Doppler being the original birth giver 🤣
I'm always kinda surprised there was never a spin-off series of this, a "Where are they now" and "What kind of adventures do they get up to" kind of series, but I can understand why they wouldn't have done so. Doing those spin-offs kind of kills everything that the movie or story was trying to make if it wasn't going to be a series.
Also spin offshore might kill the classic We all want the classic to live even tho it didn't get much attention at first but now it got all the eyes. I remember seeing this as a kid, I think the year it came out or sometime after. But man I love this movie
Check out the game "Battle at Procyon" it takes place right after the movie. Jims been taken into the naval academy and theres a strange fleet of new full metal shipascalled "Ironclads"
@@J_artz_ yeah its fun, It can get kinda hard too because its like a really awkward rts but the stories not bad they refrence the movie a lot...Which I could tell ya more but its been so long I cant remember much at all. Gameplay was fun though, shit tonnes of ships all with customizable gun emplacements, You can choose the crew for your ships and that gives you various stat boosts, Where you click matters for targetting so if youre chasing down a sloop you can shoot out its engines or damage the solar sails.
@@ElricWilliam wow! That actually sounds like a lot of fun! Do you remember where to get the game? I wanna see if I can get it. I'm not a huge gamer but that sounds like something I can do for fun
As a kid I thought she hated him or thought he was useless and in the way but now after watching it I can see that exact moment she started to warm up to him
I really like how much 'show don't tell' there is in the animation ESPECIALLY with these two! It's never really 'pointed out' that her pupils dilate when she feels an intense emotion (joy pain anticipation etc.) But their personalities are also displayed in their expressions towards one another. Amelia is playful and well 'catty' in her behavior she always has a smirk or grin with her eyes almost always looking analytical or plotting and her expressions like her shape language and attitude are as sharp as her claws! Yet once she's hurt bad enough and settles down with Doc her expressions are the softest they've ever been. With Dubbler, you see him learn to be calmer as well going from excessive angry rambling to stuttering, to taking over the situation when she is unable to do so yet still maintaining both professionalism and kindness even being playful back with her slightly (for the most part before he freaks out again lol) And finally, the ending I LOVE the ending a small shipping part of me agrees with my boyfriend who was whispering "Kiss... KISS!" next to me when I showed him this but the reveal of them having kids together is just as wonderful in my eyes ESPECIALLY their faces. Dubbler is proud of himself and the wife he has and Amelia is soft and warm with boh her husband and children. As the two dance, their is the same level of playfulness and gentleness in both of their expressions. And to top it all off Morph is using the same BIG eyes he used when Silver told him "keep an eye on this pup" so one of the parents had to ask him to 'keep an eye" on their kids so they could share a dance. Ahhhh so much detail and they just keep piling no matter how many times I watch this masterpiece. (Sory for the paragraphs lol I just love this film so much)
I noticed that when Amelia is with Doppler she seems to let her hair down a lot. With everyone else, she is the stoic and commanding Captain but she goes softer when Doppler is involved. The warm smile is a good hint. Given how intelligent she is, I imagine to her it would have been very refreshing to have someone on a similar level to her. Mr Arrow is all well and good but he was still leagues beneath her. Also, the eyes she gives him when he says they aren't a couple, basically asking 'are you sure about that?' or something along those lines. I think the hug after they escape through the portal is the big payoff, all the stress and action finally over and they can actually appreciate each other and the bond they've forged.
As a kid this movie was so innocent and fun As a teen this movie became a really cool adventure As an adult all the jokes that went over our head ealier make us laugh out loud to the extent of spitting out our drink and rolling around with laughter.
I just realized she is constantly gathering data and applying it. When Doppler lands on his head when gravity is engaged, she learns she needs to look out for his physical safety. Next scene, “Brace yourself, Doctor.” Later when he aims for the upper thingy and shoots it, she learns he’s a crack shot, and immediately trusts him to shoot out the cable. This trust is rewarded, he’s a crack shot again.
This two gave me the same energy as Kida and Milo, and Anastasia and Dimitri the nerdy bit incredibly brave guy with the baddass girl. Although Disney is trying to make this type of couple, they don't get the same feelings I wish there where a lot more of this dynamic
1:54 OK, I know this is about shipping which is fair, but can we just appreciate the little animation details? When she gets excited, her pupils dilate like a cat's would.
Well it's like they say like father like son, not just personality but also looks, I'm just saying because I'm nothing like my dad in terms of personality but I do look just like my dad, I'm just saying
Stereotypical Disney theme... all "children" in these movies are basically clone copies of their male and female parent counterparts. Gene sharing pretty much doesn't exist.
I love that this film explores a romance between two deuteragonists while the protagonist has his own different business to take care of. Their romance grows really subtly.
Honestly, their romance is adorable. I like how they both go through their own character arcs as well through their budding relationship. Amelia learns to be a little more humble and Doppler learns to find his inner badass. Also Amelia's expressions are amazing to watch.
5:05 Of all years of being an upstanding, proficient, and honorable Captain while serving in the Military as well as sailing through the galaxy traversing numerous dangers without ever losing morale nor confidence with her abilities, it only took a clumsy intelligent scientist (Doppler) to leave her 😮 by actually snapping back at her somewhat hilariously although he wasn’t trained to commandeer a ship, he can maneuver it just fine and Amelia should at least trust him. The look on her face is a mixture of impressed that he actually stood up for himself against her then shocked since there hasn’t been anyone under her command not even Mr. Arrow that can’t follow her orders without fail nor would they dispute about it but that’s what makes Amelia and Doppler a perfect pair. Amelia is standoffish yet she’s kindhearted and prideful because she’s confident of her talents and skills while Doppler is smart and awkward though his quick decision-making and courage has proven him as a great tactician and genius that can help the crew evade potentially life-threatening circumstances. They just bring out the best of each other.
Very underrated couple! Just feels so natural and realistic of how their relationship evolved from being good friends to a happy couple without it feeling forced!
There will always be this certain charm with 90s and early 2000 animated movies. I don’t know what it is, hell it could just be nostalgia, but I feel like there’s something more there, something that is missing in most of today’s animations.
I has a feeling, that Amelia had an affection for the doctor from the start. Yes, she was kinda ruthless for him, but I think, that’s how she actually shows her affection. Maybe Amelia at her own didn’t realized, that fell in love with Doppler
I'm not sure how Alien maternity goes, but the fact they had kids straight after the voyage means she's called him to her cabin during their time together.
I think there is a bit of a time skip after they get back as we see the outside of the house kinda fade into looking substantially improved meaning that Jim and his mother spent the price of those gems to get things fixed up. Jim seems to have either graduated or successfully enrolled in the academy meaning that it could be a few months or even longer after they came back home
I think part of why it works so well is that I can imagine Emma Thompson and David Hyde Pierce doing these same lines as a stage play and it still working beautifully.
wait a strong female character that doesn't feel the need to belittle men, constantly humble brag about how badass and independent she is and who doesn't feel clasical femenine behaviour is weakness?
