Tim Sutherland's journey to uncover the lesser-known aspects of Viking life is a must-watch. It's time to look beyond the stereotypes and understand their true impact on history.

The bringing back of treasures from across the seas is so relatable. So human. My father traveled considerably as part of his work. As a little kid I remember being so excited upon his return. We would all sit around and watch expectantly as he unpacked his big suitcase. Because within that suitcase, still smelling of airports and aviation fuel, was treasure. A treasure for each of us. A treasure from a far away land that we could only imagine. A t-shirt for my brother. 2 tiny, handmade felt mice for me - wearing little aprons. A scarf for my mother. All the way from Amsterdam. Treasures from a far away land. To this day I still associate mice with Amsterdam. Those mice became my whole flipping identity for a few months ha ha 🤣🤣 🙂🐿🌈❤️

The first known Viking age battlefield and graveyard dates to around 650 A.D. on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. Yet, for some reason, the Viking age is still often recorded as beginning in 793 at Lindisfarne.

Imagine the billions lost, and never to be found again, or at least not in the foreseeable future. It's not just the Vikings, Warlords across the globe have been doing this throughout the centuries, and as we know it's still to this day going on somewhere by someone. Whether by force or manipulation, it's still happening. Greed, has and will be the greatest weakness of mankind. Twist it however you want, but that's what it boils down to.

The Lindisfarne episode did not come out of nowhere, but as a direct response to Charlemagne's attack on the Saxons and destruction of their hallowed tree/Irminsul. Those who escaped that battle, fled to the Danes, who figured attack on Charlemagne's treasury (a.k.a. his way to paying his troops: monastery gold & silver), was the fastest way of undermining his troops' willingness to fight. They knew where best to attack, simply because they knew each port and monastery from years of peaceful trade with these prior to Charlemagne's advances!

You're not suppose to say that. Its true, but you're not suppose to talk about it.
@casperbetz7606

@@DesertRat.45lol No. You're not supposed to say that because it's bull. History does not mean you are allowed to make things up whenever contemporary sources are shaky and/or obviously partial (they usually are) with a somewhat propagandist agenda. That's not how these things are supposed to work. No, the Vikings were most certainly not "pagan jihadists" as it were. That's conjecture, and pretty bad one. The Irminsul was a mythological place, but the (real) revered tree was in all likelihood one of many. The one in question stood in what is now part of Northern Germany, near the river Diemel, which is a tributary to the Weser, which means pretty far south from Viking lands. These Saxons were demonstrably not Vikings, and the Anglo-Saxons were just as demonstrably not Franks. The reason we even know about the felling of that Irminsul (for the non-believer:. a rather large ash tree used for ritual purposes) at Eresberg in 772 is because Frankish chroniclers recorded the incident. It is a little unclear how or why Scandinavian people at least a few hundred kilometers to the north should have taken note, let alone reacted in such dramatic fashion. There was no pagan pope and no pagan empire, no pagan crusade, and the Saxons Charlemagne fought were not the Normans the Franks had to deal with from half a century onwards. Those Norsemen were well-versed shipbuilders (obviously), whereas Saxons from the Sauerland never got to see a large river, let alone the sea. That is a pretty far fetched fairy tale not supported by any known facts.

Fantastic show absolutely loved it. It explains perhaps as in my blood I’ve collected silver for 35 years never selling one item. Silver coins, bullion, bars from mints . I have well over 8000 ounces and will pass it on to my family. But it takes multiple people to lift it all off the ground. But it is beautiful it value plenty but I’ve never bothered to calculate it. As it’s just a hobby just happens to be silver. But not long back I’d a DNA test to see my lineage. And funny enough a strong Scandinavian heritage. Perhaps it explains my hobby. Thank you for this violent, mystical, magical part of human history.🇦🇺🇦🇺❤❤🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

I wonder what would happen if we (as in countries invaded by the vikings) started to demand these treasures back as some countries are requesting items 'given' in days gone by to be returned ( just pondering on that thought)!

I remember that I learned that changing leadership in the Vikings be culture and violent....I believe that Harold Bluetooth chose to be drowned when he was defeated off the Denmark Southern coast.. Being a viking himself,he took the easy way.He was very familiar with the lingering death and suffering as part of the program for the losers...

We need to get out of the habit of calling them "vikings" as a collective. That roughly translates into "pirate" and most of the population(s) didn't participate in raiding, although many benefited from it and trade was a bigger lifeblood than piracy and "vikings" doesn't cover the multi-ethnic makeup of the ancient Norse/Danes/Scandinanvians. More than raiding, the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms likely found the concept of immigration to be far more threatening.

Did it not occur that the vikings might not have looted the cross or shrine do to a belief in taking objections placed on a dead man or in a coffin would curse the object and the taker with an ill fate and haunt the endeavors of the whole clan if not returned. Therefore if they did the killing to loot was one thing but they would not loot a shrine or cript.

A whole episode primarily focussing on raids in England and the city of Talinn with no mention of Denmark? Heck, even Talinn means the city of the Danes and it was the Danish vikings who raided and ruled most of England. What an insult to history.
