Hi I am about to purchase from your website but. What medications for quarantine should I have on hand before the fish arrive? And how soon after acclimating should I apply medicine or wait a week to apply medication? Thanks !
Our three main meds are IchX, Praziquantel, and Levamisole. We treat livebearers and wild caught fish for parasites, but the rest we just observe and treat based on what we see.
I just put a chunk in everyday for a few hours and then removed it (so it did not pollute the water) for a week or so until they realized it was food and started eating it. I do this with lots of foods. I'll put a small amount of whatever the new food is in the tank. If the fish don't eat it, I remove it and put in what they are used to eating. I find that if I do this regularly, they will almost always learn to eat the new food over time.
Hi Dan, thank you for the awesome videos! I have a few amazon puffers and one is having some trouble where sometimes after he eats he starts to puff a little and is jerking around and almost doing flips. Im not sure what to do, but I love him and want to make him better! Any help would be great!
4K! It's a long time coming, but we did it, Baby!!! What I like about triple sulfa is that is treats gram negative bacteria AND is safe to use (even synergetic) with Ich-X. So, when things come in with ich, it is my go-to.
Great content. Can you do a follow up on this? It would be informative, at least for me, how much you're dosing, as well as how you remove the medications from the system.
I plan to do a follow up if/when the last few skinny ones fully recover. For dosing, I follow the instructions on the meds containers OR I go here: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Medication.html Most of these meds become denatured after a little while in the aquarium. What I do is wait a couple of days, then I put hydrogen peroxide in the hospital tank to sterilize it and to help denature any remaining meds. Then I change 100% of the water and fill the tank up for the next round of fish. Activated carbon is also useful for all the meds I use EXCEPT copper. Some copper meds can be removed with carbon, but chelated copper, which is the one I use, needs to be removed with Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acidic Acid
I have an Amazon puffer that seems like he’s swimming slightly sideways very very minute. What could cause that I’ve done the Amazon puffer aquarium co-op deworming schedule already
Ahhhh they’re so cute, and you did such a good job bringing them back to life! Getting a 55g this weekend and I have no idea what to stock it with, might have to keep these in mind 😍
A youtuber swears by Freeze dried Krill (in a can, dry). If you dump them in dry, they float... but apparently puffers love them and can grind their teeth on that food.
I got 3 amazon puffers a week ago from aquariumfishsale. All dead. Used same trio of meds you mention. They seemed visibly irritated by them. They seem to have came with a bacterial infection. Maybe columnaris. Kanaplex or maracyn 2 in hindsight I should've used.
Dan the care and dedication that you put into your fish and their health is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing. These guys are so cool. I might need to get another tank! When do you think they will be ready?
Deserves way more views! GREAT Video. Only thing though, their beeks grow super super fast... You should adress that in the video. That people need to be breeding pond snals, and ramshornsnals separately... And yes I keept them. Kept about 6 different freshwater puffers, these are the weakest bite, so they cant eat trumpet snails. They are to hard. And the beeks grow super fast. But it is the best video I have ever seen about how everybody should treat their Wild caught fish when they come in. In my opinion no mather if they look healthy. Good Video. But do another one on e the beeks. They get big, and the beek thing is why there is not a single video on youtube on a 5 year old adult....
He covers a lot here. Dan has Amazon Puffer vids.. If anyone is searching, he has them.. 🍻 I know what you are saying, though... I have Fahaka puffers, a Green Spotted and a Figure 8. Those guys seem to eat tougher meats and grind their own teeth. Meanwhile, I will soon start an aquarium channel with Shorts, addressing my puffer issues and Solutions. So many puffers die, due to a lack of info. Not all the meds can be used on them. Not all parasites are killed by the most common meds. Even the products Dan uses here... are not really available to everyone. But, he has the best meds vid, right here! 🎯🍻
Hello, hopefully, you can help me. I bought a figure 8 puffer fish he's in freshwater for now but his tail is in a really bad shape turning off white been treated for 5 days with pimafix & melafix but have not seen any improvement its actually getting worse and he hasn't eat for 3 days now and not as active as he used to be. Please help as I'm afraid he won't last much longer.
You are a gentleman and a scholar. Get Gills can't calculate shipping until it knows what is being ordered. If you put what you select what you are interested in and go to start checkout, it will then show you your various shipping options. One day, we'll find a better way. But that is how to check shipping costs as of now.
How do you train your puffers to eat rapashy? I think I ruined my sweet pea puffers by feeding only live and frozen brine shrimp and live worms. I have many types of rapashy and Xtreme foods.
It's horrible to have a sick fish, and not know what to do... This video may nave saved 100 thousand puffers' lives... If you came up with puffer-safe substitutions for the API General Cure and Triple Sulfa, would help the Puffer world immensely.. Not that much news out there.. If you get a chance.. Mahalos, Dan!! 🍻 Scotty on Maui. 🏄🏄🌈🏝
Awesome video. I'm having a terrible ich infestation with my 4 Amazon Puffers. I need to get some ich x but no one around me carries it. After trying with API and Jungle ich cures they are still horribly infested. Your video came out at the perfect time for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 💕🐡💕
I would like to know where I could get some been wanting some for awhile now just can’t find them. Hopefully I can find some as well taken care of as you have taken care of these puffers!
Heather, I generally have tight lids on all my aquariums. Out of curiosity, why do you ask? Is there something about covering a tank that helps Levamisole treatment?
Dans Fish yes I seen a few other videos where they say to cover the tank with a towel or blankets for the 24 hour treatment that the medication is light sensitive, so I was just wondering how you did it because I’m torn on if I need to or not, I prefer not to put any more stress on them then needed
@@heatherleelovejoy9690 Interesting. I do store it in the dark due to its light sensitivity, but I never thought about light denaturing it when it is in the water. That is worth checking up on further. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
It comes pre-crushed for the chickens. I just scoop some out of the bag and put it right in the Repashy. Here's a vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HmXWBMmdaio.html
Just got my puffer in today. He is looking good but is just swimming at the bottom of the tank. He is active but just swims right above the substrate. Is this normal?
How to you stop them from surfing glass? I have 6 and they keep swimming up and down side glass. They eat well and not sign of health issues but after they eat, they go back surfing glass.
Dan just curious if you put the meds in the water column or do you put the meds in food? I’ve heard that General Cure isn’t readily absorbed through the skin.
I put the meds in the water column. It might be better to put certain meds in the food...you may be right about the metro and prazi in General Cure. The Kanamycin, Flubendazole, and Levamasole I use, however, are very effective when used on the water column because they are absorbed into the fish's skin via skin and/or gills. I tend not to use medicated food because I generally use meds during quarantine and I don't usually feed my quarantine tanks as I don't want any ammonia developing in those non-filtered quarantine setups.
Hey I noticed you said surfing glass is bad. Could you help me out? My amazon puffer is in a planted 20g with 8 zebra danios at 7.2 ph, 0ammonia, 0nitrate, and 0nitrite but constantly surfs the glass. Thanks in advance!
Willis, I'm don't know if it is bad for sure, but I think it indicates the fish is not settling fully. I honestly don't know what causes it...perhaps glare on the pane of glass? I've found that when I keep them in groups, they surf a lot less...but I don't know if that will solve your issue.
Great video! They are cuties. If anyone could get them to recover, it’s you! Do they like to be in a big group like that? I’ve only seen them at the pet store (if they have them) one or two to a tank.
I have noticed that, when I have a big group, they seem more comfortable. When I only have a few, they are more likely to surf the glass and show other stress behaviors.
What did you use for the eyes? You mention they have clear eyes. I have one that its eyes are getting blurry. What can i use to treat ? Its not eye rot, looks like some sort of a brown/green bacteria slowly covering its vision, making it blurry or disturbing its vision.
Puffers often have brown/green/reddish reflective areas on the surface of their eyes. Its weird when you first see it, but it is normal. Cloudy white eyes is not normal. I'm not a veterinarian and I can't see what you are seeing, but your description makes me wonder if your puffer's eyes are normal.
Oh boy... Thx. My Fahaka breathes extra hard and fast, since an inch long. She(?) is over 7 inches.. Has to eat one piece of mussel meat at a time, until exhausted, needs a break. Water changes, water has been good.. Any idea what med to try..? Did Expel-P, and Paracleanse.. and have Ich-X on hand. Thx again! Scotty on Maui.
DOH! This vid showed up and I thought it was new lmao i was all excited to order one when theyd be ready xD then looked at the date lmao. Guess Im over a year late :(
Hello Mike, I do ship. I'm sold out of the amazon puffers at the moment. I'll get more as soon as they become available again. Here's a link to the stuff I sell and to my shipping policies and such, in case you are interested: getgills.com/store.product/Dans_Fish
@@DansFish very helpful .. I got a green spotted puffer .. looked fine for 2 months.. this 3rd month has gone down hill and now is serfing the glass eatting less and less . Nothing different between the months same tank and etc. Though some plants died due to salt .. but java fern and anacharis are doing fine I've tried general cure , prazipro, furan-2 I got a new tank on the way .. maybe a new space will help him .. he is in brachish of 1.008 , and still small I needed some guidance on puffers treatment and what I can and cant use together
@@turtleplates I'll let you know if the fluebendazole works for the couple of skinny ones I have. Might be worth a try for yours? If the flubendazole does not work, I'll try a kanamycin/nitrofurazone mix.
Hello Daniel, I've never had a problem with the Amazon Puffers bothering other species of fish...that is one of the things which I love about them. Personally, I'd be more concerned with the Yoyos bothering the puffers.
