Treating my chickens wounds with blu-kote 

Blu-Kote is amazing stuff! I use it on wounds on my dogs, too. Awesome stuff.

I think you'll be pleased with how quickly she heals. that stuff is amazing, I just used it a few weeks ago on an orpington that survived a dog attack.

That stuff works great. You can use it on just about all animals. The wounds are typically caused by the rooster being overly aggressive during breeding or by him repeatedly breeding just a few hens out of the flock.

Well Pete, I gave you a thumbs up on this video simply because I learned from your experience with this situation. The only things I did similar to you was solicited my wife’s help, got the blu-kote and got it on the chicken. I did everything else differently. We waited until night when the birds were roosting and we wore nitrile gloves. Please keep videos coming 😊

Good to see that you give your hens small (cut) greens, albeit picked clover. I hope you have taken to cutting your grass greens to the clover size. This "blue" spray looks like my father's favorite old fashioned method of treating wounds. How potent is it in the spray form? Pete, I think you are going to have to extend your coop to an "L" shape. There is a pecking order with chickens but often it's a sign of frustration, that there is not enough room for them to run about. Try using " chicken" sounds of encouragement when trying to catch them. Never chase hens. You got to "whisper" them into submission! Spend a bit more time sitting in your coop at special feeding times and copying their sounds..ie, talking to them by using their "comfort" sounds! Like the broody hen calling her chicks to a delicacy. It sure helps to catch them. And always use the element of surprise. But make sure it's not half-hearted and fully effective. Always think "gotcha" when grabbing them and not " oh Gosh, I hope they don't fly about." They can sense when they are one up on you. I never had any trouble catching chickens , but then, I was a kid and could move quickly. - smaller and adroit. Got to aim for pouncing on both the wings. Or maybe my mother used to trim one of the wings a bit to stop flight to make it easier to catch them?! Yep, extend ( widen) the coop! Makes it easier to block off to catch! You block off the corner and your wife catches! Hah! Gotcha! Try it.

Pete, Been there and done that...hard to catch em when they need your help! Had the exact same event. I bought a cover for her back to let her heal. Think that was easy to put on??? Left it on for a month . Nets are a mess...I ended up just catching her in my hands in the coop after she laid her egg in the nesting box. Good news is she healed and is fully grown back with new feathers and Ernie our Rooster has been more of a gentlemen.

I always get my hens in the night when she is on the roost and treat her for whatever I need to treat her less stressful for them..

Put her by herself, I had to do this from a makeshift pen out of a trampoline. And that is a awesome run, love the roosts. WOW looks like I am a few years late for comments lol. I ordered Blue Kote and was wondering if it worked for you?

I saw a video were they went in the hen house at night with a dim flashlight. Alot less stress on you and the chicken! Gonna try it. Its hard to see them beat up like that...😢

My biddies are getting these wounds and sores. I thought it was the heat lamp maybe burning them when they get to close but i unplugged it and its still happening. Maybe their pecking on each other.

That’s what I was gonna say, and that’s what I do I just go in at night and pick them off the roost and treat and check them.

Hi Pete. I have read that? I've read that you should rescue the hen and place her in a cage of her own until she heals. Have you heard anything like this?

Did you put your run post into the ground or is it sitting above ground?

The American Bresse is a good breed to, even better than the Rhode Islands because they start so early laying and they have good meat-production. And they are no hybrids.

I dont have any chickens but i've seen so many videos on Justin Rhodes youtube The Rooster is picking the back when its raping the hen really dont need a rooster since u only need eggs they are all on the "jail house" so there all safe, unless u want him to make baby chicks! other than that there was no reason for the rooster the first place ~ video was almost 1 year but gotta keep watching :)

I just tried this and now they are all pecking at her….. before she was pink but now they are all curious and picking at her. Think it was a mistake. Or is it just curiosity and as it dries they leave her alone ?

Can’t free-range because of all the predators, can a new run be started for the overflow hens? Maybe even with their own rooster? When they overcrowd, nowhere to go, nothing to do, they thin their own flock

Seperate the bully so they come down the peeking order. 👍

Don't use a net for chickens, use a leg wire. Much easier.. But hope the blu-kote worked and the chickens didn't pick you any more.

Why didn't you wait until she was roosting? you could also have tried sitting with your legs crossed near the food and as they come and pick it you could have grabbed them been a lot less traumatic on the lady.

Hi Pete, I have this happening as well. Here's what I found. The hen who is doing the feather picking is not doing it out of aggression. She's a Wyandotte and she pulls out the other girls feathers and Eats them. Yes they eat feathers because they contain protein. I've watched her doing this and then researched it. There's usually 3 reasons why they feather pick. One: they are lacking protein. 2: They are overcrowded or 3: they're bored. I also used Blu-kote and when it dried, I put no-pick on the area. It's really thick red gel and it smells bad and tastes horrible to chickens. When I put my treated hen back in the coop, SLW pecked the area ONCE then backed away. She was not interested in picking that area again...haha. You did the right thing. Now, how long was your thumb blue...lol That stuff stains so bad!! Cheers! 🐔🐓🐥

Rubber gloves. Maybe good for foul. Maybe not so for humans.
