My 2 female rats have been in the same cage for the entirety of their lives I got them both at the same time from the same shop 2 years ago and I've never had a worry. But im now noticing on one of my girls the red scabs on the middle of her back, and alot on her tail. On the contrary my other girl has zero marks on her entire body. My first thought was my one girl was really bullying the other. But now I'm worried it may be mites. What are the chances that only one of my rats would get them and not the other?
@dnaslitherscritters3244
@dnaslitherscritters3244 3 года назад
So I have seen that where one cage has one particular grandma and I kept it with the other ones for a few weeks to see if it would spread It never did. I will have them checked for rats mice or lice see if you see anything crawling. If not it may be a ringworm issue or fungus you may want to have a vet do a culture swab to see if it comes back with any kind of fungus

Keep them warm like give them a heat pad
@supercyanblue2379
@supercyanblue2379 2 года назад
@@dnaslitherscritters3244 Those mice need doxy which a medicine they take their whole life and yeah give them an extra large cage bigger then normal so they can have the heating pad on a far side when they want it. The doxy after 2 weeks makes the disease act non existent. If you mouse seems weak walking, climbing can’t regulate tempature, losing weight, then it’s worse keep ‘em fatter to keep ‘em alive longer. I give mine cherios every other day so if they don’t take the cherio by hand I know they aren’t doing well and then if they don’t eat and your desperate put whip cream on your finger if they don’t lick that off they are likely going to die. The way to get them to take medicine is to gentle put the feed syringe to their mouse and slowly give them bit by bit of the 0.1. Probably organge flavored doxycycline.(get by vet) after you give them the first med, the second time put it through the bars don’t try to force feed it. Let them take it trough the bars not in your hand and not with the door open. Mice don’t like to eat when they aren’t in their cage. After you put it through bars and they take it 2-4 times you can now open the cage and point it toward them and they will come up to you and take it by themselves and you just squeeze the end to release it gently. that respiratory disease also causes necrosis,tumors which can be fatal quickly, the vet will hot iron those and you bathe them in a barely warm epsom salt bath in a small tub they can stand in, for 5 mins make sure all Epsom salt is dissolved as if they eat raw salt it’ll kill them, but melted it’s harmless and the water needs to not be hot barely even warm. It’ll cause perma burns. they have to be hand dried with a towel. And repeat only as long as they have an open wound. If your pet mouse is really bad you can hold them in your hot steamy shower for 10 minutes and it’ll clear their lungs but during this don’t get em wet. Mouse mites are orange in my exp and usually behind the neck. If your mouse starts laying out in the open they likely are suffering from something. If their eyes are poppy they are happy and not in pain. If their eyes are deep they are unhappy or in pain. If their ears are up they are okay and down they are scared. Tapping tails means they are signaling for battle. wrapping tails means they are looking for comfort. if your mouses have mites it’s worth doubling their food to keep ‘em alive while you treat them. Fat mice live longer skinny ones are closer to death. I keep a female cage in the middle of two boy cages so they can kiss each other through the bars and allow short mouse dates till they try to get furry with it. if you seperate your mice for more then a couple days it’s very hard to put them back together again. Get used to doing rub downs of your mouses, mites,lumps,tumors. never ever force feed them water even if you don’t see em drink. try giving them ice in their cage.

@Dna slithers & Critters Yeah for mice... rats are too heavy to properly do that. Rats are also easier to handle. I don't even do that to mice even though it CAN be safely done as long as you SUPPORT the body. No animal can be picked up by its tail. 🙄 You said it's safe as long as it's done correctly... even if it could (which it cant) be done with rats, you are still doing it incorrectly.

@dnaslitherscritters3244
@dnaslitherscritters3244 4 года назад
We have been using them for long time to prevent and eliminate Mites on Reptiles. This is what the old school Reptile keepers would use is they would hang the strips in the room or break them into little half inch wide 1 inch long strips and put each of those above each rack or I’ve seen it directly inside enclosures with them directly drenched and Snake Laying right on it. Never seen any neurological issues from the people that I’ve encountered. I have had one person on Facebook say they’ve seen it but I have never heard any confirmed cases. In the Harpers I am talking to I’ve been doing this and using them for 10+ years on hundreds of Snakes

Diatomaceous from diatoms, not diatRomaceous, nor is it permethErin but permethrin. DE has what is essentially microscopic shards of glass that cut into the exoskeleton. Hes saying its just chalky and dries them up, lol. Also he can have visitors step on a wet soapy mat to kill mites and even use a disinfectant.

Diatomaceous earth is literally just a mineral. It kills certain bugs because it is very small crystals and the bugs breath through their bodies. The crystals stick in the important parts and do damage. (Non-Sciency Version lol).

Yep I stopped your video right at the moment you picked the rats up by the tail. Idc why you are raising these rats. I get it, other animals need to eat but you do not have to treat the animal that way. You NEVER pick a rat up by it’s tail. Maybe watch snake discovery. They have a wonderful video of how to treat rodents properly, even if they are just reptile food.

Tailing is a perfectly safe method as long is done correctly. we get complements all the time with our 2 to 3 adoptions a week.On how calm our rats are. Securely holding the base of the tail ensures the rat will not jump and run away. After all we can’t have hundreds of rats loose inside of our facility.

I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY TO SOME PEOPLE TO TAKE A RAT TO THE VET, WHEN I ONLY HAVE THEM AS FEEDER BREEDERS, BUT THIS SIAMESE RAT IS AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND RARE FROM WHAT I'M TOLD. I'm having a huge problem with what I think are scabies mites that I inherited when I bought this house. I noticed the basement had some sort of powder residue along the bottom of the walls that I assumed was left over carpet fresh stuff. Well it wasn't long before anyone who was down there started burning and itching, I had a couple of my cats go down with me while I was treating my rats and then they started itching and having bald spots. I generally treat my tubs with some DE anyhow but dry, I have the puffers that came free in the bags, I haven't tried doing it wet with a sprayer. I'm at wits end, my production has slacked off so I'm buying feeders for my snakes and feeding these guys, hate going to the basement because I get chewed up and I pity the poor rats.
