I haven’t been on YT too much lately, but as an SLP, the first thing I noticed was the change in Bob’s speech. I appreciate your leaving the comment in the drop-down regarding your surgery. I hope the issue is resolved, and that you experience a full and speedy recovery. You’re doing really well, especially considering what you went through. Thanks for the helpful video, and I hope you both have a Merry Christmas!
I suffered about 20 years ago. It’s miserable because it starts just as you’re attempting to go to sleep. I used Epsom salts baths and a supplement called horse chestnut. It subsided.
I watched your exercises for piriform syndrome and it completely nailed my pain.. I am very grateful to you... Lots of love from India🇮🇳.. Keep doing it
@@BobandBrad Im a physiotherapist myself. You guys are my heroes there is so much knowledge from you lot. I keep on watching your videos over and over again and im trying to write down as many things as possible to help me help my patients !
I've had RLS for years and suspect the following - 1. Previous back injury 2. Bowel related 3. Prolonged bad posture I also get arthritis from a partial wrist fracture from 30 years ago. At the same time I injured my back. A back injury can be intensified by bad posture when sitting. So my advice, besides Vitamin D, is to have good posture when sitting, get up and walk around often, eat muesli and other cereals that aid and speed up digestion. If you have a major RLS attack, then lie on your back, put your legs up and cycle in the air until your legs muscles really hurt, while supporting your back with a pillow. RLS should be gone for that night and maybe the next. I also find that if I sleep on my stomach and my neck is at the wrong angle, it seems that with just a short time of that will bring on RLS. Maybe the result of the pinching of a nerve in my neck. This is a definite trigger for RLS and find that my neck can be at the wrong angle for about 20 seconds before RLS starts up and sometimes sooner. So be aware of the support and position of your neck as this seems to bring it on very speedily.
@@BobandBrad Not really ^^;; Remembering to move around when you have a desk job is difficult. Remembering to take care of my neck when sleeping is very difficult because I LOVE to sleep upside-down. As for bad posture, one only finds that out after being in that bad position after a few hours and one is already in pain. So it's kinda difficult to put the remedies into practice. Another strange thing is the bowel part. My thinking is the waste areas are very close to the nerve areas that lead to your legs and if you prolong going somewhere, the waste (either or) actually affects the nervous system. I'm being non-explicit here for obvious reasons. But I've always found that in some cases, relieving oneself can significantly reduce RLS. Now this isn't the only trigger for RLS. It's definitely the nervous system that is being interfered with either through posture, injury, waste / chemical interactions, and pinched nerves. Funny thing is that I experience all of these, but the bowel one is easiest to solve as one just has to remember to eat muesli. Hopefully this will help people who suffer from only that type of RLS. I would be interested to know how many people suffer from RLS as a result of a back or neck injury. I ran and fell up some stairs (not intentionally ^^) and landed on my wrist fracturing it, but badly injured my back. Took me about 10 minutes just to get my breath back. Was in immense pain. Thankfully my wrist took the brunt force otherwise I definitely would have had a broken back.
I am a female 63 years young and I am in good shape. I have a lot of trouble trying to get rest with my legs giving me fits most nights. I drive for a living and 2570 miles in March. I will be your best cheerleader if you could give me a routine for my one day off that can make a difference. I am drinking water for my weight and I haven't smoked since 2009. Thank You both for the great job you do for us here.
another important tip: RLS can be a side effect of medications which affect dopamine and/or serotonin levels; including medications such as antipsychotics, pain medications and antidepressants. RLS is also a symptom of withdrawal from opiates, amphetamines and others. pubmed and nimh have published many articles on this. my son died from an opiate overdose years ago--which is why i share this. with opiates, dopamine production is hijacked and when opiates are discontinued dopamine is depleted from the brain resulting in RLS. in rehab and ER crisis units, medications are administered to counteract RLS and other possible life threatening conditions. my point is; because RLS has many causes it is important to identify that cause to receive proper treatment. also; open and nonjudgemental communication with friends and loved ones is crucial ❤️
I’m suffering from rls for this very reason , after 20 years of opiate abuse I’m now 4months into a methadone program but since my recent methadone reduction my rls is debilitating, I’m sleeping maybe 2hrs a night and now it’s transferred to the day aswell . I have a meeting with my worker tomorrow so we will see what the doctor says as I don’t want to waste anymore money on things that don’t work but it’s becoming a major problem to the point where my sobriety is at risk , this really isn’t the same as leg cramps , or just do some stretching .
@@nay.murray6097 I hope you are doing better. I’ve been suffering with this RLS, too. The depression med I’m on apparently can cause this as well as antihistamines. Have taken oxycodone for years due to back pain, spondylolisthesis. Going to get off it soon. Right now dealing with National Adderall shortage. In other words, having some withdrawl because my pharmacy ran out. It’s lead me to believe that it’s time for me to get off as much as this medication says possible. I hope you are doing well, I really do. Sending love and prayers your way.
@ MD J I’m so very sorry for the loss of your son. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to help others. I know this is a year old and I didn’t see it when I posted a month ago. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a child. I lost a younger sister to cancer and that was bad enough. I’ve been able to completely discontinue the MS Contin that I was taking as well as Prozac. I’ve also cut way back on oxycodone and Adderall. So far my restless leg syndrome has not been bothering me. For a while there, I thought I was going to go out of my mind. I hope that you are doing OK. I agree with you that all of these types of medications really mess with your dopamine system.
My Dr told me to drink tonic water for the quinine to help with RLS. If my leg feels a bit twitchy in the evening, I drink about a half cup of diet tonic water and it really helps. But a leg massage sounds wonderful. P.S. Bob, you sound great!
My husband had spinal surgery. I have used the exercises u have taught to get him walking again. He now experiences RLS. I will look into this product. So far u guys have made us look like an impressive team to his Dr's :-). Happy New Year & feel better Brad. The drunk act worked for Dean Martin. Maybe u need to embrace it lol
I was so disappointed. I thought you'd have something helpful for my RLS, instead it was an infomercial for a gadget I can't afford. There were more solutions in the comments than in the video. I love you guys and really thought you had a solution.
I've had RLS for decades. I found out by accident about ten years ago that so long as I eat dark greens or romaine lettuce about three times a week, I don't have it. I had already tried numerous supplements.
My poor mother suffered so badly all her life with this. I do, also, and it is like a form of torture, especially when you are so very sleepy and you have to stand up to stop the discomfort. I have ordered a set of these for myself. My mother passed away during COVID pandemic. She lived in a nursing home and they were not very helpful when the RLS came on. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your product.
Connie, I’m so sorry your mother passed away and wasn’t relieved of the RLS. My mother has it as well, I can’t imagine the frustration you felt. Sending you love and thinking of your mom.💖
Due to one of your previous shows I purchased a set of leg and foot compression system... Works so well I couldn't believe it.... Mine is for foot and lower leg only.but it really has a forceful squeeze.... Now i have three machines I would not be without.... My inverse table, my chi machine leg oxygenator and now my leg compression system.... I feel like I have brand new legs.... By the way.... Facebook has yet to apologize to me for having asked you two a legitimate question as to whether or not restless leg can be caused by sciatica.... They removed my question saying it was not in keeping with their standards.... I am still puzzled over that....
Oh goodness, glad I read your note about the mouth ulcers... I wondered if y'all had had your Christmas party just before making the video 😂 Hope they are better now, no fun I know. You guys have given me so many great ideas with exercising, stretching, all kinds of things.. thank you! I've started getting restless leg periodically but noticed when I do an exercise you recommended in another video, rocking back and forth on my heels to my tip toes. If I do that 50 times at night I don't seem to get the restless leg syndrome. Thanks again for all the wonderful information you guys give!
I found that 240 mg of magnesium and 300 mg of calcium and 500 mg of potassium daily eliminate my restless leg syndrome. If I fail to take any of these, trigger points in my legs flare up and cause a creepy feeling and cause my legs to jump. Pressing hard on the trigger points clears them and stops the leg jumping and allows me to fall asleep.
Had that since I was a kid, pretty much entire life. One of my earliest memories is asking my mother to hold my feet down so I can resist moving them. Had to ask her to stop within 10 seconds. Some nights I have to get out of bed and walk around for a bit to relieve it a little. Never heard of any therapy other than pills that'll help so I'll probably be trying these. Read higher potassium intake would help ... didn't work. Apparently it's common in people with ADHD as well. Needless to say its always taken me, on average, an hour to fall asleep. I need to be downright sleep deprived to fall asleep in timely manner, and even then it's a toss up and no where near as quick as it should be under those conditions. I'm surprised I can sleep at all tbh.
Good grief! It goes with adhd? That is really interesting. I've also had rhis since childhood and have adhd. There's so much that travels with adhd. Do you remember where you heard or read about the RLS and adhd?
@@lisakulp4639 Sort of, there's been "studies" that show those with ADHD have a 26-45% higher chance of having RLS. While RLS only effects about 10% of people in general.
@@suziepeck5717sifrol and paxam. Sifrol is a slower acting one. Paxam is very closely related to Valium and works fast but it loses efficacy with use fairly quickly.
I’ve had two spinal surgeries from an accident years ago. L4, L5, S1 spinal stenosis correction, and discectomy. I’ve had RLS since, and also very “tight” hamstrings, of which I could previously touch my toes without issue. The nerve pain when trying to stretch hamstrings is the most uncomfortable feeling ever experienced. Spinal issues are no joke.
It typically occurs at the nap hour, and if you are in an environment whereby the room conserves heat too well, then the best approach is to do a before nap time workout routine of your choice for an hour and also remember to keep the dry air out during the summer the best way you know how or winter time using the thermo control with the "fan" control setting on "auto" fan setting simultaneously and not "on". Dry fan air will dissipate at auto setting, and it's good for the lungs when you do your workout out in your room at night before bed. That's my conclusion and cure after 38+ years, too. It seems that at this age, it is the gold standard age experience I've noticed. Human evolution wasn't meant for energy saving high-tech rooms, which trap dry air in rather to the contrary outdoor experience. Who even gets cured off of restless leg syndrome on a couch rather than outdoors doing stuff and then napping in the forest somewhere. I am serious about this. It's a cure on my behalf in every season of the year and counting. My time for a workout is at the 12 mark to 1am. It is cold outside to open windows and dangerous too. unpredictable too if you live with your loved ones.
I suffer for RLS for years now. It's not every night but I will have it for a couple days and then its gone for awhile. My arms were also effected! So I had both arms and legs flying around! lol Eventually, I found that taking a mild magnesium supplement a couple times a week helps to keeps it away.
At age 10 i remember this RLS just in my legs. As i aged it became worse and worse and was then seeing a pulmonologist for this. Then around age 50 it went into my upper torso as well. Known as Restless Body Syndrome. I’m on medication for life for this. Horrible. Thank you for doing a segment on this.
CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE EVER MENTIONS ELECTROYLITES---POTASSIUM AND MAGNESIUM. CURED ME IN ONE NIGHT! ONLY HARD THING IS GETTING THE DOSE RIGHT TO DEACIVATE CALCIUM (MUSCLE ACTIVATOR), A REAL NIGHTMARE!! BOB AND BRAD SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS AND BE REAL HEROS TO HELP A LOT OF MISERABLE PEOPLE. DOCS TRY TO SCARE YOU AWAY FROM POTASSUM BECAUSE IT CAN HURT PEOPLE WITH KIDNEY TROUBLES (RARE). GOOD LUCK PEOPLE, NATURAL HELP IS OUT THERE!!
Diet is also a cause of restless legs. For me it's stuff like barley, green tea, yellow corn, which I believe contain tannins. I avoid these foods and usually my legs are okay at night. Usually. If not, I take a warm/kind of hot bath for 10 or 15 minutes and then settles it down enough to get to sleep. Good luck to all who are searching for relief!!!
I get it and my mom had it. I figured out what makes it go away years ago. REFLEXOLOGY! I figured since the feet have so many nerve endings in them it would work and it sure did. It's not as easy to do it on yourself, but you can. I would look in to a reflexology device too. Also, don't eat anything spicy at night before you go to bed and especially caffeine.
Thank you!. I've had RLS since pregnancy with my second child. Bet my husband is looking forward to me sitting in the living room with leg compression bands on doing reflexology on my feet! Attractive. lol. I'll try anything if it helps. It's a horrible condition. Thank you Bob and Brad.
I use magnesium and calcium. Natural vitality CALM for mg. And calcium/mg/zinc supplement during the day. If it occurs because i neglected to do the above, i do the CALM and biofreeze. And i get up and eat something. Like last night, the worst it has ever been. Thanks you reminding me to prevent it tonight. Up now to supplement.
I have it not only at night, but when sitting down too. I do use leg compression for when I am working, as I work for home for 10 hours straight, so this helps a lot while working.
Bob and Brad I have it, and I have had my veins pulled to help, in my legs of course, it went a way for a while but do to sitting at work it has come back, I have bought a sitting ball which helps another issue my back, and now a standing desk, I take Gabapentin at night but it is a must to wear your leg compression socks for better sleep and during the day if you can mine are from the ankle to thing prescription. I love your channel and watch often. In my opinion heat would not help and does not help it's the compression socks that are a must and medication, sadly if you have it bad like me, this is years after trying everything.
Hopefully this video helped you, or maybe even the comments from other viewers who have treated their own symptoms differently. Everybody is different so different things may work for different people. Try everything! There's got to be something out there that will fit well with your body. Best of luck!
Not only legs.it is also hereditary. Yes exactly..also arms. I am afraid a mechanical device might be only somewhat helpful, but it is a neurological disorder, so I am not convinced. Also the severity of symptoms and frequency varies from one person to another. I live in Australia and I don’t think it is available here. I noticed that there were some triggers that a device has no effect on. I noticed, like a doctor I was seeing some time ago, carbs eaten in the evening triggered RLS immediately. As the disorder seems to be related to the level of dopamine, I do not believe the device will have much of the effect. You mentioned studies...well studies usually focus on seeing expected results, and ignoring other factors. To give you an example..I do believe meditation is very beneficial, however a friend who has heart problems, followed advice to join a meditation group in Bali. He didn’t cure his heart but felt better. It was supposed to be the proof of meditation benefits. What was completely ignored was the fact, that he also had a week of holidays, eating healthy food. He is a scientist and a workaholic, eats ..whatever. I am sure that if he had a holiday, ate healthy, he would feel better without meditation. I am a bit of the opinion that you are pushing a useless gimmick.
I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, as well as RLS. Gabapentin helps both a lot. Interestingly, I don't have episodes of RLS all that often, but when it happens, it's an awful feeling.
For some people it's ignorance of blood circulation issue. Laying on your stomach until one feels comfortable is an easy, pharmaceutical-free zero cost solution.
Many years ago, I read that if you take a spoonful of molasses each night, it will relieve the symptoms AND prevent it. I’ve suffered from it for years and I never know when it will occur. I tried this remedy and it totally works for me! I try to remember it each night, and have noticed that when I don’t use it for a few weeks, I’ll get a reoccurrence. Probably not for diabetics, tho.
I have Lipo-lymphedema and pump my legs twice a day for an hour. I do my second pumping right before bed. It does not help with my restless leg syndrome.
I was experiencing this uniquely uncomfortable syndrome on and off for a few months. In my case, the restless leg symptoms stopped when I discontinued using Unisom.
Would you please consider a video on how to strengthen the core in a wheelchair without having to put the anchors in the wall? I’m not allowed to do that where I live. I do have bands but is there a way to get as much of a workout to the core?
I received this but it has no instructions. It has obviously been returned and sent out again. I just need to know where to plug it into! I don’t see a plug in in the handheld unit. Thank you
Really hot water, and/or the massage effect from my shower head, gets rid of my night leg jerks. Some people confuse RLS, with night time leg jerks. I have night leg jerks. It only happens right as Im dozing off. I cure this with getting in the shower and spraying my thighs with really hot water for 10 to 15 mins. Works everytime. Im posting this because its basically a cure for it, and some people may be confusing having RSL, and night leg jerks. Good luck.
My RLS starts about 10 in the a.m. and goes all day. i get relief from lying down. mine is a problem more in day time than at night because I take temazapam for sleep and fall asleep fairly quickly,
Usually it is the Ferritin in the brain that is low and using this. My blood ferritin is fine. Pills didn't work for me. For some odd reason, people who suffer RLS have trouble getting ferritin to the brain. I would like to know the actual root cause of RLS, but that will never happen in this Medical Modality we are in.
I started getting RLS from eating a high protein diet! I have taken dairy out and reduced my daily protein intake and no longer have RLS. The effects were almost immediate!
I have been diagnosed with restless leg but I never have the creepy crawly feeling or the desire to move my legs (both of my parents did though) except that my leg pain will temporarily go away whenever I'm moving except when I don't take pramipexole twice a day. If I don't take the pramipexole I will be in so much pain even in the middle of the day. Of course, trying to sleep is horrible. When my pain starts to come on it first appears in my wrist, elbow and shoulder. When the pain gets to my legs it dominates the pain. I have had this pain my whole life but it started getting much worse at about age 45. I am now 67. I have tried to warm my legs with electric heating pads or massage my legs. Heating pads and massaging is like moving my legs, it's only a temporary relief, as soon as the massaging stops the pain comes back. I doubt if your compression system will work so if it doesn't can I return it?
Humor me… When working out, one does a cool off set When swimming, one would do a cool off lap. When walking all day/standing on your feet, should one do a cool off walk? Bob and Brad mentioned it in this video…
Both arms and legs affected since I was in my late 20’s. I suspect my father was affected as well. Both my children are and 1 of my grandsons. Magnesium does nothing for me. For my legs I walk, my arms I tend to ‘thump” them and end up with bruises 🥴
RLS, is awful. I started getting it in my late 40's, only thing was to get up, and walk around. I have had many sleepless nights, due to RLS. Magnesium helps.
It’s caused by a B1 deficiency! Cured mine in a few weeks with a low carb diet and B1 supplement.. It’s made worse by high carb meals which reduces B1.
Most of my friends have no clue I have RLS. It rarely comes up in conversation unless I’m having a sleepover in which case I warn them that sometimes I randomly start throwing my legs around. Tonight I’m having really bad urges to move my legs around. I tried to just move them around and accidentally kicked myself. I also hurt my knee because it was previously injured and now it hurts again. Though I did get a really good ankle pop early and that was satisfying…
I have restless leg syndrome, and what really helps me is that when i get into bed i put on those really thick gel yoga or dancer toes things. For some reason this works, they are comfortable and the put pressure on pressure points. These gel things cost about $10. I have told friends about this and they agree, it definitely helps with restless leg syndrome.
My RLS is helped by laying on the floor with my legs up the wall for 10 minutes during the day and yoga for preemptive solutions. When I’m already experiencing it I’m helped by taking a really hot shower and shaving my legs (for some reason, maybe it’s a sensory change).

Yah this thing is too bulky and cumbersome. Having RLS for some 40 years now I have tried all home remedies with little success. I always avoided anti seizure drugs or anything drug related, home remedies were my only options till 2013 when I discovered Revitive. It's a foot zapper and I use it right before bedtime for 15-20 minutes, and it is the only drug free thing that works for me.
I feel fortunate b/c after suffering for years with RLS, in 2018 I started taking CBD Oil and it completely cured my RLS, thankfully, because the medicine I was prescribed would make me fee so bad.
Hub will kick - sometimes so hard he will fall out of bed! He's tried wearing socks and meds, but it still gets bad. I get it just a little, but I twitch and tap all day from anxiety. Our massage chair has leg and foot compression, I will have to see if it helps...
The kicking sounds likePeriodic Limb Movements of Sleep. If is PLMS, you can count the seconds between kicks. Like every 13 seconds. Then talk to a neurologist to get dx and treatment.
I used yinyoga for my severe rls. It stretches the muscles, fascia and tissue. And walking a lot. It has gone completely now. i just have to keep up the yoga and walking but that is no problem. A new theory is that rls is just a matter of too tight fascia, muscles, etc. And it has nothing to do with dopamine. But doctors ofcourse dont want to know this yet.
Have you the results of some study showing what doctors want to know? Or is this just your personal bias? RLS is often associated with low iron and can be a precursor to Parkinson’s disease, by the way, it would be in your interest to see an MD at least once about your problem.
@@mchevalier-seawell4438 it most certainly is not a precursor to parkinsons, even doctors deny that. Iron can be a cause but not for everyone. I did see a MD and she advised the dopamine tablets, which make it worse in a few years like international studies show but most doctors dont know about. No study on fascia training, no money to be made by that for bigpharma.
Don't laugh... Pickles! Dill pickles (or just pickle juice) I started eating pickles for my low blood pressure (the salt) and when I saw this video, it dawned on me, I've not had any issues in like what, a week? I love pickles and I love not having low blood pressure (the dizziness was the worst) I have something similar my legs and trunk it does it with air though, for my lymphedema and lipedema. Magnesium glycinate oral capsules and magnesium spray or gel or even organic coconut oil on my legs before bed really help me. I have multiple chronic pain illnesses and have tapered lower on pregabalin or Lyrica which I truly believe this poisonous medicine is the cause in my case since I've been tapering. RLS drives me nuts at night.
About RLS. My doctor prescribed pramipexole. Have used it about 3 years now. One tiny pill about the size of a pin head, taken about 2 hours before bed time. Almost 100% effective.
