Many amps have a treble and a presence control, but they appear to do a similar thing to your tone? I explain what is the difference between the two controls and how you can use them to their fullest capability.

Nailed it again Kley with this video idea! I've always kinda wondered what a presence control does and why. Keep em coming!

Hey Man ,just found this channel, Subbed after 60; seconds, appreciate your delivery. Bass player forever, still learning how these things work! Hiwatt 100 Bass with Warwick 410 main rig... Yes there's a presence control.....

Very nice explanation Kley, I’ve read many books that explain negative feedback and the implementation of a presence control, but this is a great break down of the use of it and why we would want it in the first place. I’d love to see an video that covers Resonance (the low end equivalent) in the same way. Thanks for all these vids Kley! The DIY community thanks you!

Sure! It's quite simple, a Resonance or Depth control is also in the NFB loop - but instead of rolling low frequencies to ground (and therefore out of the NFB path), it sends high frequencies to ground. So think of the presence like a 'bass' control (high pass) in the NFB loop and a resonance like a 'treble' control' (low pass).

I want to correct a mistake - at 1:50 the signal exits the CATHODE of that 12AX7 triode - not the PLATE. It is wired as a cathode follower. My error.

Omg, why didn’t I see this a long time ago! Great explanation of how it works. I have a 400 watt HIWATT amp that has a presence control but honestly I don’t really hear a difference unless I crank that knob… it doesn’t seem to do much until the last 3/4 of the rotation. Maybe now what I’ll focus on is the feel of it more than the treble that I hear from it. I use that amp for bass guitar so maybe I should have it all the way down anyway… no?

Cool info. Although a lot of this is over my head, the main idea makes a lot of sense. Sidenote: Anyone ever tell you you've got a very calming voice?

I've got a question; my amp is set this way: volume cranked up, Bass at 4 o clock, mids at 1 o clock and treble at almost 0, I keep the presence at 3 o clock.... I love the sound of this setting but there is only one problem... it is too loud, I mean it's too "ice picky," i don't how how to explain it, but it sounds too loud and goes direct to your ears... i think that correct term is" ice picky". I tried lowering the presence, but it didn't change much adn the sound became dull, i tried putting the treble to zero and the amp was still ice picky, the only thing that worked was either to crank down the MIDS o 9' o clock or lowering down the volume (both options change the tone a lot) specially lowering down the mids. what can I do to solve this problem? because I like my amp to have the master volume high at concerts. thank you for your future answer

In old Marshalls such as JCM800 2203 Presence also affects distortion of the amp.
