This is a simple, traditional tree climbing lanyard setup. You'll notice that it's just the modern doubled-rope climbing system but on a shorter rope.

I personally consider some sort of stopper knot on the other end of the lanyard a requirement..........when I climbed, I used a 30ft lanyard and came to the end often.

Always have a stopper. Couldn't agree more.

As a rock climber experimenting with the vt, the pulley seems like a great idea. I like the ability to throw a vt on a loaded rope but getting friction down makes the knot unreliable atleast in 7mm cordalette. The pulley atleast adds a knot block if you were smart enough to add one.

That is so good concise info, to the point, simply the basics. Thank you.

Well done, Patrick! I use a 25' lanyard for my system for the same reason you mentioned. Rope management tends to be trickier, but the benefit outweighs the nuisance. Thanks for the effort you put into making this video!

Thanks for the video. Created my lanyard for recreational climbing based on this. Since then replacing the pulley and prusik knot with Xinda lanyard adjuster, similar little device like Petzl adjust connect with removable pin to replace the standard rope easily. The downside is the lanyard adjuster only works smoothly with 9 - 10.5mm diameter ropes.

Really good, simple video, Patrick. And the annotations add a lot and make it very compact. Very helpful, even if only for reinforcement of basic concepts for someone who doesn't climb every day (actually its been a while now .... also very classy ending! ... taking it all apart again :) (as others have noted I know you meant to mention/show a stopper knot in the end :)

I would greatly appreciate a video on how you manage all the slack on that long lanyard. I get tired of stuffing it back into my pouch and daisy chaining it tends to unravel on me.

You have to secure the end of the daisy chain so it doesn’t come undone

Thanks Patrick, I enjoy your videos. I have a quick question. For years I have been old school climbing with just a single lanyard. I know I should use a secondary lanyard with a choke end. Any recommendations for a set up?

I've been using a fall protection lanyard off a harness but it was only 7 ft. I tied knots in it if my tree was skinny. I don't see the purpose of 20 ft lanyard? Maybe I don't understand how that works. I use a single lanyard and when I need to climb past a limb but stay on the main trunk I dig my spurs into the tree , hold onto the tree with one arm unclip lanyard throw out over the branch, and re- clip to my saddle and progress and high as I need to in order to set my snatch block? I would not ever suggest doing it that way but that's just how I do it not knowing any different. Thank you for the videos very informative.

If your dead set on this method I saw someone once suggest using a long webbing sling so before you unclip your lanyard you would loop and choker the sling around the tree clip it to your bridge with a beaner in case you were to slip it would catch you. But many others either use double end lanyard or use their main line so always tied in, sure you know this just saying for anyone who might not know reading this hehe.

Knut cant possibly be a name of a hitch, or can it? Considering its just the swedish word for knot

Is the micropully adding friction? Why is it being used here?
@SaintRegime
@SaintRegime Год назад
Tending the hitch. When you pull up the tail, it pushes the pull against the hitch and slides it up your lanyard. Your weight coming back onto it engages the knot again. Makes it much easier to tend the hitch.
