Learning how to climb a tree especially on climbing spikes or spurs however you refer, is an uncomfortable and testing task two adjust to and find the sweet spot. In this video I talk about some of the basic elements of working on tree climbing spikes secured with a harness and safety lanyard and lifeline. How to position and understand the purpose of different positions. As well discuss briefly work positioning and some advice when working with a chainsaw.

It really is easy wants you learn how to plant yourself like his showing you. Every one getting into it makes that mistake by not have that flip line set away from the tree comfortably. I done it guys I know did it. Once you learn the things you have to and showed properly its easy after that and it's going to be fun for you and you'll love. Even if your not doing trees and as a hobby climbing. Just have to take your time and learn it the right way. There's times I go up just to sit in the canopy and look at the scenery

Man...this brings back great memories. I remember giving my first tutorial and talking about the harness, spikes, fliplines, lifelines and the importance of having a general understand for physics. You did a great job man, just make em understand, ultimately, it's healthy to fully respect the trade. And make sure they understand respect means having a considerable amount of fear. But fear is an excellent motivator.

thanks for the very usefull video. i got a practical question about the resin or tar on the rope. i still find myself in very unpleasant situations during the jobs that my climbing device is jamming when i need it the most. i have been climibng single rope with a isc d4 and a handascender combined with a pulley and have been climbing with a spiderjack 3. both of the belay devices will get stuck and you are not or are hardly able to come back to the ground. have you ever expeianced this? and do you have some tips? i have tried a pruissk which works oke but also gets annoying afther a while because of the resin. like to hear from you.

Hey just wondering do you really believe on throwing your line in every tree before you go up it?? I had this foreman when I first started climbing he used to tell me if you can't go up a tree without your line then stay out of the tree, then when I started getting better and into bigger trees I liked to throw my line above me a couple branches to feel safe and he would still yell at me for doing that he finally got mad enough at me that he made me climb this poplar that was about 75 to 80 feet without my line, there was a tree close enough that he was in and took my line up with him and wouldn't let me have it till my tree was skinned up one side and I was done and needed to come down, so now even when my gut tells me to tie in I don't bc that's how he wants it done, is that safe or am I just over thinking when I'm up there

I like the idea of the loop runner+karabiner onto rope bridge as additional location stability....IF the length is right. But at 10mins into the video I began to feel a bit worn down as I'm being hectored for the tenth time about the need for using spikes. So suggest fewer repetitions (of everything).

Im getting into trimming my own trees. I can do low things easy but I need to get climbing gear. I used to do ground work for a tree trimmer. One more reason those nubs are unsafe... I once watched the trimmer cut off one of those nubs it fell 40 feet. Hit another nub causing it to change trajectory and it hit one of the ground people in the neck. Severe injury. Lesson don't work under a climber that refuses to use spikes.

Hey man, great video. I have a question, that I am yet to find the answer to. How is it, that when you are chunking out a stem, you can continue to climb with you lifeline? I've seen videos where guys do it, but I can not see the system well enough. Because of this I chunk down with only my bukstrap, but I agree, that having the lifeline is crucial.

ouch!!! Get some Weaver super climber pads...you'll thank me later. The use two upper straps. Or if you want to spend a little more get a velcro stiff wrap upper pads and velcro lower pads. Then you can dial them in real nice. Those T pads are torture devices.

Lol heavy top will wipe a spar. You bet I'm going to be spiked in. And either double wrap my lanyard. Or use a strap like you did. I have seen climbers whip around a spar 2 or 3 times even with spikes on.
