“Unless you’re in truly thick bark you won’t need them” that’s going to really improve my climbing man. Dave you’re a big help! I climb mostly small oaks and palms, very thin bark, and with the palms smaller holes would be great

This video brought back memories. We used Buckingham 40 years ago before climbing stands were available. I still remember being exhausted before I even got the deer stand tied to the tree.

Guys, please note. I took this gentleman's advice and I got the shorter gaffs. Best advice I'd ever received online from a RU-vid video. Go with the shorter gaffs if you're not on the West Coast.

chemistrycounts I'm in western WA and starting my own tree service and I use pole gaffs cause although yes I do come across lots of the thick bark that makes you lose footing momentarily at times you can usually get past it....sometimes yes I wish I had the longer ones for the nasty big trees with crazy 4inch bark but I can see how I'm not missing out on much

Dave, you are absolutely correct when it comes to the length of the spur, most fella's are afraid of "kicking out" and compensate for this by using much longer gaffs than they need to...

@finksies23
@finksies23 9 лет назад
Just get a good flat file, that what I did on my climb rights. For most/all steel that is hardened, you want to keep it cool when you sharpen it. This is to not take the temper out.... So don't use something that willheat the steel (Grinder).

I have absolutely no business being here but I found your video very interesting. My first thought is do any of the company's offer a hybrid spike say 1 7/8" - 2 1/8" long to give that extra bit of bite and still remain close and stable to the tree? When I was a kid 10 to 12 years old my Dad had a set of pole spurs no pads just heavy straps top and bottom, we would climb the poles 10 to 15 feet up lots of fun. Dad would have killed us had he seen us..Haha Thanks for sharing your video.

cool interested to see what you think trust what you have to say im east coast and im going to try pole gafs instead of tree gafs because we don't have the thick bark and im usually high in little tops plus being a trimmer I have to go from tree to tree maybe with the pole gafs I wont have to take them on and off so much walking know what I mean

How do I know if I need narrow width or regular width for a set of cast aluminum pads? Is there a measurement I can take on my calf? I am 6' tall and 203 pounds. I would say my calves are about average for my height and weight. I would assume I would want regular?
@WesSpurTreeEquipment
@WesSpurTreeEquipment 8 лет назад
+oneindustries1 The regular width would be most likely to suit you best, based on your self-description. The narrow/deep shape are pretty narrow.

Thank you Tom Saad I've tried that and I don't see any improvement really.. I know you're supposed to keep the file straight and flat with you sharpen but haven't seen much difference! I'm trying not to hit it too hard. I have a brand new pair of aluminum climb rights

I got the big buck velcro for like 200$. The problem is I weigh like 155 pounds and the damn pads are maxed out on tightening them up and the slip off of my legs. Just got them in today. What can i do? There wasn't a size selection on westspur
@WesSpurTreeEquipment
@WesSpurTreeEquipment 4 года назад
Hi Frank, Unfortunately there isn't sizing available on those pads. Please call customer service if you would like to exchange them for something better for a narrow leg. Big Buck pads (not the wrap) might work better for you or the cast aluminum Narrrow pads. www.wesspur.com/spurs/spur-pads.html The cast aluminum pad is the only one that comes in a narrow size. @AcousticGiant

This is probably too late for you but heat them up with a propane torch to loosen the Loctite adhesive that they put on them. I like to put a dab of blue loctite back on when I switch gaffs so nothing just "pops" off.

Would you say that the Klein hydra cool pads are the most comfortable? I'm trying to find the most comfortable setup.
@WesSpurTreeEquipment
@WesSpurTreeEquipment 9 лет назад
Stuart French Good question- the Klein Hydra cools are probably the most comfortable pads widely available on the market, although everyone has slightly different leg shape, height, width etc so it may vary a bit. A slightly more economical option that is similar is the Weaver Cushion Wraps- the velcro ones act similarly to the Hydra Cool Pads but at almost half the cost. As far as cushion and the moisture wicking/cooling comfort goes though, it is pretty hard to beat the Klein option. Depends how much you want to spend, but either of those will be very comfortable. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

What would you say is the most comfortable saddle out right now?
@WesSpurTreeEquipment
@WesSpurTreeEquipment 9 лет назад
That's a hard one, a lot of it depends on body type and weight. The best thing is to try a bunch on, but short of that a lot of people swear by the TreeMotion, the new Petzl Sequoia is noted for being comfortable, and the Matt Cornell Rope Saddle is one people are into at the moment for its customizability and comfort. It's really pretty subjective though.
@Felix5513
@Felix5513 9 лет назад
That is what I have gathered. I appreciate your opinion though, 500 bucks is a lot of money and I want to spend it well.

Weaver shin cups vs climb right ultra light?
@WesSpurTreeEquipment
@WesSpurTreeEquipment 4 года назад
Hi Manuel, it's a matter of preference and shin size. The Shin Cups have a steel insert that can be bent for a custom fit to almost anyone. The Ultra Light pads have very good reviews from climbers who they fit, but they tend to fit people on the smaller side. If you have big legs or are 6' or above, you may find the ultra lights bite a little. Let us know if you have any other questions!
