All English dubs of Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might comparison video. This video is for analyzing and comparing purposes only. Saban, Pioneer, AB Group, Funimation, Ocean Studios. See juicy details below.
When I first saw Tree of might it was 1999/2000, I rented the VHS from Blockbuster. Turned out it was the 1998 Pioneer Ocean Dub version. I was surprised that it sounded different than the Funimation broadcast version that was currently airing, which had replaced the Ocean Studios dub that was on KidsWB then switched to CartoonNetwork/Toonami.
To put this in perspective, The Tree of Might aired in the US in 1997 as a three part episode. Later the next year a redub and full VHS version would be released on home video. in 2003, another dub from AB Group which we don't talk about was released. Finally, Funimation did a dub in 2006.
Personally, I've always loved the original 1997 version of Tree of Might with the Ocean Dub cast/music/and sounds. I grew up on the original Ocean dub version of Dragon Ball Z, and when the switch happened to Funimation and the entire voice cast switched, I was upset to say the least; but came to love the new voices. However, the original Ocean dub cast in the first three movies and 50 something episodes will always be my childhood. I can't watch the Funimation version of the early episodes of DBZ or the movies. It's just not the same.
