Wollemia nobilis, Australia's Phoenix trees, the worlds rarest tree found in Australia 20 years ago. The Wollemi pine is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN's Red List, and is legally protected in Australia.
Discovered by David Noble, a field officer of the Wollemi National Park in Blackheath, in the Blue Mountains, Australia.
A Recovery Plan has been drawn up, outlining strategies for the management of this fragile population; the overall objective is to ensure that this species remains viable in the long-term.
In both botanical and popular literature the tree has been almost universally referred to as the Wollemi pine, although it is not a true pine (genus Pinus) nor a member of the pine family (Pinaceae), but rather is related to Agathis and Araucaria in the family Araucariaceae. The oldest fossil of the Wollemi tree has been dated to 200 million years ago.

Fascinating. I used to drive the choo choo express at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney and give a speech about the Wollemia pine there!

Interesting - we have planted one at Spiers Old School Grounds - a park in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It is doing well.

Hmm the Wollemi pine i think is the worlds second rarest tree, the most rare tree is a cycad called Encephalartos woodii, they are all clones of the original specimen discovered in the Victorian times and they are the descendants of a very diverse group of trees that lived during the Mesozoic period when non-avian dinosaurs were around just like the Wollemi pine, meaning both of these rare trees ancestors were eaten by dinosaurs in the past.

I collected the seeds of Wollemi Pine for the first time this fall. We plan to plant seeds next spring with reference to this wonderful video. There are about 2000 seeds, and since it is grown in Japan, which is hot and humid in the summer, I do not know if it can be cultivated well. We cannot grow a large number of Wollemi Pines in our small garden, so we think that if surplus seedlings grow, we can sell them only in Japan via the net. Please let me know if there are any legal issues.

The Wollemi Pine can survive temperatures far lower than -7C. Specimens in the UK have survived -15C. It grows well in Scotland.

I think in other regions the trees weren't so lucky at these temperatures. So maybe it depends on certain factors how deep the temperatures can get. -7˚C probably is the temperature that the trees can definitely survive.

The good doctor is correct: one of the world's rarest trees. The video title is wrong - RAREST tree would have to be Hyophorbe amaricaulus, of which there is only one left. Of course, that is if you consider palms as legitimate trees

The Wollemi Pine is a wonderful tree with a magical story. However it is not the world's rarest tree. The world's rarest plants are on the Three Kings Island off the North Cape of New Zealand. One is a vine, Tecomanthe speciosa for which there is inly one naturally growing plant on earth. The other is a tree, Pennantia baylissiana for which there is only one female tree. In cultivation cutting grown trees were stimulated to produce make flowers so viable seed was eventually produced. Both these rare plants were discovered in 1945. The Wollemi Pine could be called the rarest tree in Australia or possibly the rarest conifer or the rarest tall tree, since Pennantia baylissiana grows only to about 8 metres tall.
