Well, yesterday we looked at the Cage version of this very iconic starship and today we examine the production version we all know and love from the 3 seasons of Star Trek TOS. We proudly present, to you NCC-1701.
-Please keep in mind this is NOT the full episode, merely a Mission Briefing and a quick look at this great ship.

Okay, I have not seen the episode in a long time, but I know this image is from "Day of the Dove" and each level you see here translates to two levels on the ship.

I don't necessarily think that the manuals are contradicting each other, but rather showing possible re-fitting, re-arranging, and trying out new things to improve storage space, and or efficiency. As they have gone to spacedock, and mention repairs and stuff in the series. Things change when you get the ship fixed up. Like what McCoy said in TMP: "I know engineers; they love to change things."

Those numbered marks on secondary hull are for magnetic docking clamps, when ship is in drydock on ground. In designing they were placed there to show lineage of ship from our ships which have water line numbers.

One reason the anti-matter storage is near the bottom of the ship and not deep inside is because of the potential need to eject the anti-matter in the case of failing containment. Remember, anti-matter will mutually annihilate any matter it contacts (not just the deuterium stored specifically for that purpose), so if the magnetic bottles fail, they need to get it away from the ship FAST. If it's in the center of the ship, they're screwed.

Maybe when it says Starship Class, whoever was in charge of the typing up the plaque at the San Francisco yard pressed 'tab' too early and that's just there to say, "Type in the starship class here" and he just dropped the ball. Then when they printed it out, they just rolled with it.

The pods in the middle of the engineering floor - Scotty's secret whisky stills? They appear in episodes where his stocks are running down. Everyone else either just thinks that they are engineering equipment or keep quiet because they want to avoid having to clear out the human waste tanks again (its all gotta go somewhere).

I think in the 3rd season episode "Elaan of Troyius", that the pods were where the Dilithium crystal reaction chambers were located.

LOL, So after doing some math and working on plans for a Constitution model. I have come to the realization that the Filming Model that is in the Smithsonian is very damn close to 1/84th scale. Their claim that it is 1/96th scale is in error. The math doesn't divide right with his measurements and to what the actual length of the ship would be if it were really built. Not to mention that there were several line drawings in 3 or 4 sources claiming that the filming model was 10 feet long when it was really 11 foot 3 and a half inches. Then on top of that their was 2 separate meter claims with one being accurate at 288.64 meters, but some sources claimed 289.7 which doesn't correctly match the 947 feet that is marked as the ships actual length if it were built. So dividing 11,364 inches ( = 947" ) by 84 we come up with 11.27 feet which after converting the decimal is damn close to the 11'3.5" that the modeler is claiming the filming model really is.

Turbolifts are pretty advanced tech if you think about it considering we currently still do not have elevators that can go sideways as well as up and down.

I don't remember if it was the blueprints or the Tech Manual, but one of them said all the elevator stations had a turbo-elevator at them. When one was activated, the one at the destination would take a different route to replace it.

Just a thought on the torpedo launchers under the bridge section. The Bridge is going to be one of the heavily shielded/armored sections of the ship so putting explosive ordnance in that area may make sense. If the ship has a photon torpedo magazine penetration it is history in any case.

23:05 You do realize that objects get really hot in space though, right? Burning off heat on space craft is actually a big problem for long term space travel.
@AndromedaRoach
@AndromedaRoach 6 лет назад
In simple terms, how does a thermos keep its contents hot? By surrounding them with a vacuum. Though I would expect the Federation to have some kind of energy-recycling heat sink. Pesky implications of casually and routinely converting matter directly into energy.

I am no expert for space physics, but as far as I know, getting rid of heat and waste-energy in space is actually a problem. Space is cold, yes, but it is also vastly empty. In space, there is no air to conduct the heat. Thus, the only way to get it out are radiators (at least on our space station, that is). So, with the immense heat of plasma in the warp engines, it might actually make sense to have something like intercoolers.

@MrMartechi
@MrMartechi 9 лет назад
***** Thanks for that explanation! I had an rough idea about that but I didn't know how scientifically accurate it was. What I always found interesting: In some SciFI universes, the heat production is actually the factor, that limits weapons and their usage in space. If you think about it, it makes sense. Energyweapons like phasers or disruptors or something like that, do produce the most waste-heat. A ship can only fire them so often before it is unable to get rid of all that heat and damages itself and its crew more than the enemy. I always thought, that could be an explanation why in StarTrek they don't throw on a dozen weapon platforms more on their ships. I mean, yes, the federation has it's reasons, but for klingons and so on, I imagine technical issues would be the only thing that prevents them from making a ship just a bunch of flying weapons. Maybe that is why the klingon birds of prey have those big wings. It is a giant surface to radiate the heat without making the ships profile from the front not that much easier to hit.
@Cythil
@Cythil 9 лет назад
+Steven Stone Cloaking in Star Trek works a bit different however. More like creating a bumble which all forms of radiation travel around. And presumably all your radiation is kept inside. Or some form of phase shifting where to shift out of normal space. (or some weird combo of them both.) Funny enough as it thematicly based on submarines it would also make sense if they used a sort of "periscope" to peak out of the bubble. With the risk of detection of course. Naturally we have no idea on how this would really work just like we have no idea how the heck they cool there space ships. But maybe there some exotic form of negative kelvin heat sink technology in the future. A super advanced entropy sink. (Which may or may not be possible).
@Cythil

***** I did not think they did rotate it. The ring design has nothing to do with gravity generation. If it rotates is for other reasons. That I know. The layout what we see as the top of the station really is the top. I have wondered why we have yet to see any race play around with gravity planting more. Like have a area where the gravity is reversed. Actually that goes with ships in general in Sci-Fi. They never come from the top or bottom. Even when they do there rising up. Not flying up. Sure I get there is a galactic plane. But still. It is not like every star is on a 2 dimensional grid :P

30:20 the "Starship Class" - I have always watched TOS in a dubbed version and only recently noticed that there is a big distinction between "spaceship/space vessel" and "Starship" with TOS. I guess the reason why they used "starship class" at the very beginning, was that the Enterprise was supposed to be the first ship of this new "Starship" space vessel. I really like it how always pointed out that the Enterprise is a Starship and not some ordinary freighter.

I appreciate the original Constitution because it was the one that set the tone, started it all. That NCC-1701 is legendary. But the NX-01 was a much cooler looking Enterprise. Maybe Im biased because I think it was a superior show? It was my favorite show for a number of reasons. I loved how they always got their asses kicked and still managed to survive. But the NX was sleek, realistic and it had a submarine vibe to it that help me to appreciate the aesthetic much more than the enterprise from TOS

Interesting. I have stated before that the scale that I came up with for the blue prints/line drawings made the filming model essentially 1/87 scale (HO Train scale). It was suggested to me that they didn't know if that was on purpose by Matt Jefferies or if he was just wanting to make the model 10 feet in length and it was an accident. since the writers guide, and the measurements were wrong, and the model is really 1/96 scale it makes more sense now that the scale was chosen by Matt Jefferies. This was a common scale for models of large naval ships like Battleships from the 1940's up into the 1970's and especially in RC ships. The European equivalent is 1/100 scale. The difference of the two scales are so small that it is only 3% different. So a model of a battleship in both scales is almost identical. I also find it interesting that the scale and system that is usually used in TOS Star Trek is Metric. I wonder if Gene did this on purpose because most of the world was using it, and he figured that in 200 years that the English Standard System would cease to exist. Anyway, good episode guys, and I know you filmed it almost 4 years back, but I haven't seen all of these yet.

hey guys, I have watched about 50 episodes, and I'm a major trek fan, I'm 35 years of age, so tos was before my time and recently I have been watching the show because I felt I owed it to the franchise, I'm almost through season 2 and I'm finding that I have to force myself to continue watching, I hear you guys say Connie this and Connie that, but I just fail to see what makes it so great, I think the design leaves tons to be desired, and the stories and acting are just as undesirable, and quite frankly if I have to hear bones say kirk is dead one more time I'm just gonna flip out, please enlighten me as to what is so great about this, but I must say I do like all the movies, and I like all the other series even enterprise, do you guys like it so much just because it was the first or am I missing something? please let me know

@@aurorauplinks Yeah... "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" had done good-to-great science fiction on TV already, but they were anthology shows without a continuing cast of characters, a somewhat different beast. "Men Into Space" was a noble attempt at doing near-future hard science fiction, but it was a dry show that only lasted one season. So we had "Star Trek" coming into an episodic space-adventure genre whose previous well-known examples had been schlocky things like "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger", now doing real drama for grownups, taken seriously by the people who made it (aside from the occasional comic-relief episode). It was far and away superior. It had its share of clunkers, and the first half of season 1 and much of season 3 are uneven. But I think the best dozen or so episodes of Star Trek: TOS hold up very well today--though even with those, you do have to make some allowances for the era (some sexist dialogue, and of course the limitations of 1960s TV effects and sets).

Would love to see a Constitution II class!. A modern take that stays true to the Constitution refit from the TOS movies!. It would need to be huge and dwarf the Galaxy class!. 1000 meters!. Two meters of Polarized Ablative Armor!. No port holes just holographic projection windows !. 80 or so phaser arrays or pulse phaser turrets !. 1 huge phaser array that wraps around the whole saucer section ,10 forward firing photon/ quantum torpedo launchers 4 aft!. Maybe two Blue Andorian lance phasers like in TOS!. Huge launch bay filled with Danube runabouts!. And the first ship is named the KIRK!. Would be Awesome!!..

The box "thing" on the floor in main engineering, if memory servers me correctly, houses the dilithium crystals or at least provides access to them. In the episode Elaan of Troyius Scotty accesses the damaged dilithium crystals in the unit and replaces them with the imperfect ones from the necklace given to Elaan by the ambassador thus restoring at least partial warp capability to the ship and saving the day.

When discussing aft weapons on the Enterprise you can't use the Defiant as an analog because the Defiant in In a Mirror Darkly had rear firing torpedoes. The Enterprise clearly doesn't as shown at 22:20 where you can see that it only has one rear firing phaser bank.

The Starship class actually refers to what the Enterprise was during the original TOS run. Originally the Enterprise was not a constitution class it was a Starship Class. Constitution Class did not become canon until ST:TMP when it was placed on the dedication plaque for the Connie refit.
@christalbot210
@christalbot210 9 лет назад
+Matthew Gross Indeed. I remember this from a line Spock has in "The Doomsday Machine". I believe he mentions when they first come upon the Constellation, "by class, a Starship". Even Memory Alpha mentions that the Connies were consider a "Starship" class before they were a "Constitution" class (though it also mentions various images used in the show which mentions a "Constitution" class).
@mikedicenso2778
@mikedicenso2778 9 лет назад
+Chris Talbot Spock says no such thing: "I have it on the sensors, Captain. By *configuration*, a starship stopped in space. She appears to be drifting." To my recollection, no one ever canonically called the Enterprise or any of her sister ships a "Starship-class vessel". In "The Menagerie, Part 1", it is canonically stated that starships are not a class but a type of space vessel: "Inspection tour of a cadet vessel. *Old Class J starship* One of the baffle plates ruptured." So by this point even, there was no "Starship-class", and certainly by the time of "Space Seed", the Enterprise was intended to be Constitution-class. And of course the movies and later TV series pretty much made it canon that it is Constitution-class.

Irrelevant, it is overridden by the far more numerous canon references. Take for example the U.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764 from "The Tholian Web" and the 2 IAMD episodes. Her dedication (not didcation) plaque clearly states that she is *Constitution*-class starship. Google it.

@matthewgross8013 9 лет назад
At no point during the original run of TOS do you ever see any other plaque than the Enterprises. If an adjustment was made it was done after the fact. Like in a remastered episode or another episode that featured a Connie. Their budget back then did not allow them to make such minor changes. During the TOS era she was a starship class only changed later to the connie.

The torpedo tubes below the bridge was, in fact, a Franz Joseph interpretation upon which Star Fleet Battles was based and not necessarily cannon. +Ron Anderson Er...when did it vary? To the best of my recollection, the show *always* had weapons fire coming from the dome at the bottom of the saucer section. The idea that these domes could fire phasers and photon torpedoes (which I figured were balls of energy; no casing) in any direction made perfect sense to me...it seemed to fit the tech that was being presented (mind you, I was 2 when the show first aired). I was actually a little disappointed when the Franz Joseph blueprints showed the phaser emitters were on the RING that surrounded the dome rather than the dome itself (I did not know about "cannon" yet).

The "Deflector"... A "navigational deflector" is a good idea, and makes sense. BUT... It's OBVIOUS that the dish was originally not conceived as a "navigational deflector". It's a sensor dish. It's a parabolic dish with a sensor-spike, just like a satellite dish. That sort of device is for RECEIVING energy, not projecting it. The point of this is that there are elements of the original design that were deliberate and well thought out, that were later retconned to, at the very least, make less sense, or retconned to be just stupid and make no sense. But now those dumb things are "canon".

7:24 The things on the Engineering room floor are supposed to be where the dilithium crystals go and then that recesses into the floor to be hidden. 12:15 In real world naval construction from the same shipyard of the same class of ships will often have variations of where things are located. As things are being built small advances in tech or things they learned from the construction of the previous one will be incorporated into the next. 21:30 A lot of the text on the displays you show are barely readable even at 720p because so much of the screen space is occupied by the Lcars. You might want to consider resizing even if only briefly for a few moments when each new schematic comes up. 25:36 SFB goes with the 3 sets of two on the CA Possibly 3 on top and 3 on the bottom sfb.swa-gaming.org/ssds/FederationExpandedCA.jpg 27:50 Multicolour on Bussards. Just light the northern lights. the collected gas is ionized from the magnetic collection funnel. 30:47 SFB assumes the 4 round things are where the photons come out. sfb.swa-gaming.org/ssds/FederationExpandedCA.jpg

The cross section model is the Revell model (very inaccurate) and they just added the cut-away parts.

Tron Mcknight Wow, taking a saver to the point of worship (savior). Who am I to talk, I typo'd "canon". RESPECT the canon or get the cannon!

Raymond Conlon that i does not look like much of the orinal, the enginer hull is to small, the nacelle are bulk and to big, the interior is apple store with a wide big hollow space in the engineering hull, it is ugly and a disrespect to (Volmer Jensen, Mel Keys, and Vernon Sion) and supervised by Richard Datin

+Raymond Conlon I'll reply too since I don't like it either. Updating details is o.k., but the proportions are changed too much. Moving the engineering hull forward is just awkward. The alien looking warp engines are weird too, but not as bad as shifting the engineering hull forward. I agree with Tron about the Apple asthetic, which is totally out of place. What would have been better is if they'd kept the same Jet Age styling asthetic of the original Constitution and put more detail into it. Google "Kelvin-prise." This is perfect. It could be a little more perfect if it were taller and a touch sleeker than the Kelvin, but it's still perfect as-is.
