In this video, I go over 5 kitchen design elements that I see everywhere, and dive into whether I think they are trendy or timeless. We all love a good trend, and there is nothing wrong with that. But if you are planning a kitchen remodel, it is worth knowing what is a fad and what is timeless so you can make the right choices for you and spend your money with confidence.

I think a white kitchen is a safe choice if you want a versatile kitchen that can keep for decades. You can update the hardware or lighting to keep up with the current design trends.

After reading the comments, I think everyone wanted timeless kitchens, but they weren't 100% convinced and were looking for support for their decision. Until they saw this video, they were completely convinced after they found what they were looking for and felt safe in their decision.

I love your comment about knicks and dings in our homes. After raising 3 boys, our kitchen was beyond knicked, lol. Now that they’ve all moved out, we just finished remodeling our kitchen. I am so afraid of knicking my new Silestone and cabinets. So I hope I can enjoy it and make more memories with my family and friends.

Trendy comes and goes but timeless is forever. No buyers remorse with timeless either. As for me, I love craftsman style with soapstone counters with maybe a blue or green island for a pop of color. if you feel a need.

I really enjoyed hearing your take on kitchen design. I absolutely hate open shelves. I think in another 5 years we will be saying "what we're we thinking". I personally don't think open shelves are functional. I will be so happy for this trend to come to an end.

white on white on white kitchens need to go.... white cabinets are just fine. Just know they attract grime faster and easier, but for me that's fine as it means I will keep it clean over something else that hides it and I will get lazy on my cleaning. I personally like a mix of white kitchen cabinets with a contrasting color island and lots of other differing color finishes, hardware, backsplash and kitchen wall color.

Two islands: this screams of someone who doesn't know how to design a kitchen. Compact it for me, baby. The fewer steps I have to make while cooking, the better! ... Open shelving: too stressful! I want to hide that busy stuff. Isn't that what a china cabinet is for? ... Sky high cabinets: I am rehabbing a small cottage, and you bet my kitchen cabinets (and the cabinet I'm putting in the bathroom) will go to the ceiling. I need every inch of storage I can get. That being said, I will also have a step ladder handy to access those when I need to. ... Natural stone; if I were a different woman, I would love Carrara marble in my kitchen, but I'm hard on my surfaces (I changed my mind about this thanks to your video). Maybe the bathroom...hmm. ... White kitchen: is there anything else? Thanks for your videos. I always get so much out of your take on things.
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
Ah thanks for letting me know! I will say design is never cut and dry. There are definitely times where two islands can work and actually makes sense to do so (I have a client that I am working with now who's house falls into this category). Best of luck with your cottage rehab, that sounds like a great project!

83.3 square feet in a galley compact enough for you? The last remodel in my kitchen, the owner's choice for walls and countertops was a sort of yellow that looks like the skin that forms over week-old vanilla pudding. You might consider pull-out/pull-down shelving for your highest cabinets. Not quite as space-efficient, but much safer than a step-ladder.
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
@@5610winston I havnt used those pull down cabinet organizers before so I can't really comment on their versatility. They seem interesting enough, but I do wonder how well they work with actual items and not just show pieces. Items like heavy dishes, glasses, or mixing bowls. As much as I would like to store these in base cabinets, it's not an option in my kitchen.

Loved this video. Can you talk about hardware. My cabinets will be going up to my 10 foot ceiling. How does one break up the style of hardware. Looking into a hammered brass or hammered gold. Do you suggest knows up top and large pulls on the base cabinets?

Thank you! I actually touch on hardware in this Sundays video, so make sure to check that one out. But in short, I like to break my cabinet handles up between door fronts and drawers. Although not saying they are bad, I very rarely use knobs in the main kitchen anymore.

If you entertain, a mini kitchen is a must to contain the mess and keep the show going. It also helps if you have lots of kids. They can keep the mess in the pantry it it allows for quick cleanup. When you come home from work, you’re not walking into a messy main kitchen…peace of mind.
@hsdesignstudio

That would be nice for sure. But most of us don't have the space for mini kitchens on top of our main area. If you do, and it makes sense in the home, that's awesome. I wish everyday for a bigger kitchen haha

@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
What style of kitchen? I wouldn't say there is one particular "best" or most timeless option. It comes down to the home, style of kitchen, and cabinet layout. For example, I think subway tiles work great in a more traditional kitchen, but look terrible in a modern or mid-century modern space. It also comes down to budget and hoe much you are willing to spend per square foot.

I would like to see soft door as a standard option, spice rack, drawer for knives/large spoons-drawer with bins for storing large spoons vs the normally drawer one dumps all the large spoons, pantry with pullout drawer to make it functional vs old pantry one doesn’t Evan know what’s in it and all of the stuff that expires because old pantry is dysfunctional, getting rid of those useless and dysfunctional corner cabinets-I have one where I find myself on all fours and putting in my head with a flash light to find what’s in there, deep drawers for pots and a better cabinet for under the sink to name a few things. As if kitchen cabinets are not already expensive, now one has to spend more $$$ to organize cabinets with pull out, device to hang pots, cabinets/drawers with lights etc
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
I can understand the want for organization for sure. A kitchen without it can be downright frustrating to work in, no doubt. I'll try and pick the brains of some cabinet makers I know, and see what they have to say.

I think the 'two of everything' trend is a sad concession to commercialism. If one is good, then two are better. There are very few families that need to cater regularly for more than a dozen people at a time (OK, there are some very large families who would be an exception). For those who need to wash dishes for a family of 7 or more, a double dishwasher makes sense; but otherwise, it's just showing off. Also, the 10' and 11' high storage is utterly useless for me. I'm short and I have poor vision with NO depth perception. My lack of depth perception has affected my balance. I don't think anyone thinks it's a good idea for a retiree with wonky balance to climb ladders to retrieve kitchen paraphernalia. Love your content - keep up the good work. 😀

I don't mind white kitchens if it truly is what the client wanted. But it seems to me that white kitchens are the default when the client doesn't know what they really want or are afraid to do something different.
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
That is probably true some of the time. It can be an easy fall back for some people when there is no clear direction. I always want my clients to tell me when they aren't happy with something. I'd much rather work to find the right solution, then leave them disappointed.

Two of everything??? That seems weird to me (I live with 2 other adults in a condo that's about 750sq ft). The only things I can see are 2 sinks (1 preps ink in an island, one standard sink by dishwasher) .. and 2 islands, one for prep, and one for homework/eating etc. White kitchens are the way to go.... I have 1979 brown cabinets, and can't wait to save up enough for hubby to build us a new kitchen... we are going with white, as our kitchen has no natural light coming into it
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
Two sinks is definitely be nice if you have the space and it makes sense, I agree. It's also situations like yours why I think white in all its forms will be around forever.

My galley is less than 84 square feet. There are compromises there to fit just one of everything. It's just me and my Norwegian Elkhound, and he likes his 28-inch-wide nook under the counter between the dishwasher and the wall. I've come up with a way to use some of that potentially wasted space as storage for the every-day dishes and flatware as well as the antique china from my Grandma. I have space in an adjacent room for a small second fridge and a small freezer, so I can get away with a 30-inch full-depth French door fridge in the work triangle. I have pretty good natural light in my south-facing exterior wall, and I have ideas to add a bit more window area; the problem is, the windows look out on the next-door neighbor's kitchen window. I'm planning double-hung windows and probably using some sort of translucent glass in the lower sashes. Light? Ceiling LEDs over the edge of the countertop, under-cabinet lights, maybe something under the toe-kick space of the cabinets for night-lights, and in Baldurdash's nook, you can't have too much lighting. My planned dark blue countertops will contrast nicely and accent the light color cabinets and finishes that will be the main color scheme, with the stainless appliances and copper sink.
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
@@5610winston Every time we connect, your plan seems to be further along- that's great to hear. I get the idea of sacrificing to fit 1 of everything as well. Although slightly bigger than 84 sqft, my kitchen has nowhere near enough space for 2 of anything.

Ceiling-height cabinets are pretty useless when one is older and has bad knees. Step ladders aren't helpful when one has extreme difficulty using them. It's also not the safest thing to store heavy, infrequently used objects up high. Two of everything makes sense when one keeps a kosher kitchen.
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
Those are good points, but are all very specific circumstances. It's always about designing for the particular users of the space. No one size/design/idea will fit everyone.

@hsdesignstudio 2 года назад
I see, I see. Sorry my misunderstanding. I think in a lot of cases, budget is what limits people from all of those upgrades. I have added appliance garages to quite a few kitchens this year. I wish American cabinet builders would create functional cabinets instead of the same crap year after year - you would think that functional kitchen was just thought of last week. Homeowners stop installing crap in the kitchens just to say that it’s a kitchen. Pay a little more for functional otherwise save more $$$$ instead of the crap corchen cabinets one sees all the time unless you are shopping for a million dollar home. I cannot wait to replace my cheap ass HD and these cabinets are no more than 12 years old.

In one of your photos I see an oversized kitchen island with barstools around it and I'm shaking my head. Stop cluttering the space with unnecessary islands. That space could have been a beautiful dining table with a chandelier (and you could still fit a small island). People should stop insisting on creating an uncomfortable dining space in the kitchen, when the opportunity of having a 'formal' dining room exists. You don't have to eat in your kitchen.

There is still a full eating area with a table that seats 8 in the home, you just don't see it. Remember design is personal. What you find uncomfortable or cluttered, is another person's perfect layout.
