I have a bar type counter in my kitchen that we do not use and the corner cupboard on the bottom is basically useless and the jut out makes it impossible for my short self to use it. I just want to rip the counter and upper cabinets off and make a pantry cabinet. We have a huge closet that was made i to a pantry and its in the hallway, awkward and dark. Its such a waste or space

Vent to outside when possible. They have yet devise a filter, charcoal or otherwise to keep your house from smelling like fish. That’s if you like fish. Lol. Been there done that. The extra expense is worth it. Your nose will thank you.

My dad's condo had a closed kitchen, but it never felt claustrophobic. Thanks to the giant glass doors, separating the kitchen and dinning room. And I've heard people say: "closed kitchen is sexist cos you're locking the woman away to cook in a coffin room." Which ironically is more sexist than a closed kitchen. It insinuates that cooking is a woman's job, while in other cultures, cooking is a communal activity, everyone comes together to cook.

An open kitchen is for people who don't really cook, but want a "beautiful" kitchen for show, and who just want to serve hors d'oeuvres on a platter, heat up a pizza, boil something, or just use the microwave. Essentially, if you just eat salads or food that can be made in a blender, and don't have much of a need for a skillet or a wok, then it may be fine. However, if you regularly fry/grill/sauté, etc then you want your kitchen to be as isolated as possible. Oils become aerosolized and stick to everything, making it grimy and greasy, attracting more dust to stick to the surface, and you have a layer of gross greasy dusty mess. This happens in every kitchen that sees proper use. The cabinets, lights, walls, and ceiling all get this way. You don't want that all throughout your house. The smells are besides the point. It's the aerosolized grease and fumes that you are trying to contain. Can a high powered ventilation fan prevent all of this? Maybe...it definitely helps. But, most homes' ventilation system isn't adequate, and even so, professional kitchens, with commercial ventilation hoods teach us that it can't be totally controlled. I don't want that grease building up on my furniture or appliances. Yet, almost every home I've ever looked at has inadequate ventilation, and most of them have an open kitchen. I call them designer barbie doll kitchens.

I am getting ready to remodel my kitchen and was explaining this concept to my contractor. He has never heard of this. His first words out of his mouth were “ what about resale value?” Mine was “Who Cares?” I told him they will have free rein to design their own! He thought about it, and then was really interested. We live in a high-end area, most property is multi- million horse property. People buy houses every few years and totally gut them around here. I have a local cabinet maker that will be building my free-standing cabinets. They are MUCH better quality and they are going to be less expensive in the long run. AND my kitchen is uniquely MINE!

wondering what you think about bringing that window sill to counter height? As you have to reframe the window anyway. I am doing some research online - some say the window sill will get damage from the splash, some say they love it. Thanks!

Way to emphasize the access to the kitchen. So often that is not considered when a cabinet plan usually just shows the kitchen only, not necessarily the 1/2 bath or laundry down the hall, not to mention any doors to the garage or exterior doors close to the kitchen area. I produced a video about kitchen layout options as well. Would love your feedback on how it turned out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XViRkvYE478.html. Thx

I have a stainless steel kitchen sink that was installed nearly a year ago. Recently, I've noticed a synthetic burned plastic smell when using very hot water, specifically due to the black noise reducer at the bottom of the sink. I'm considering replacing it with an iron or porcelain sink that doesn't have any material on the bottom. What would you recommend?

if you have large windows covering the entire front of the cooking range, do you even need to turn on the range hood if the windows are open? is the range hood even effective if the hypothetical windows are open as it would seem the hood will just suck the air from the windows instead of the fumes from the range.

One of my aunts with a small kitchen - at least smaller than ours - insisted that she wanted an island when she had it redone. Imagine a t-shaped arrangement with kitchen on the stem bottom, formal dining on the top stem, living room on the right and entertainment room on the left. When people visit, everyone congregates in the entertainment room. When they have large family gatherings, they put the cars on the lawn and use the long side garage that exits from the kitchen. It means that for many years, the formal dining room and living room were hardly used. I was therefore aghast when I saw that her small kitchen could now only accommodate one person at a time, unless you went around the other way. I would have thought that the best thing would be to dismantle the dividing wall and let the kitchen absorb the dining room and then you could put a nice large seating island. They could have had ceiling to floor cabinets on the dining room wall (top of the T). If they still wanted a formal dining room, they could have abolished the living room and put it there instead. I mean, our kitchen is slightly larger than hers and we would never dream of having an island in there unless it was mobile. Namely because we used to have a small table in there. And while the extra surface was handy, it did limit how many people could be in there at any one time. So now, we have a small folding table instead and it is usually parked off to the side and we move it when we need to access those cabinets. lol.

"Just use a dang trivet" isn't really a thing for our family of autistic/ADHD, lol. It's GOING to happen -- a LOT. Just trying to figure out what's the most low-maintenance, durable, heat-resistant material for us. I guess the best way to pose the question really is: aside from laminate, what would you recommend people use in a rental (a place where people may not care for it that well, put pots on the counter, can take abuse, etc). Edited to say: maybe this is a good video idea? (haven't looked all the way through to see if you've done it yet). Design ideas for rental properties (both low-end and middle options). Renovations that are more timeless and durable?

6/11/2024 - how can you include such unintelligent communication as “from a few hundred to several thousand” in an otherwise intelligent exposition? Try Something intelligent like $200-$3000?
@hsdesignstudio
@hsdesignstudio 2 месяца назад
I’m going to answer this to help other people, even though you could have phrased this far more politely. Construction and costs have a huge range because geography impacts price as much as material and labour. Whether I say it as words or a number, it rings true either way.
@lawpilot8526
@lawpilot8526 2 месяца назад
6/11/2024 - no it doesn’t ring true either way. Where would you cash a check written for a “few” dollars? how about a check for “several” dollars? nowhere! Because those terms are meaningless, they convey no information whatsoever. If you don’t know the numbers, just don’t allude to cost. But in fact, the numbers are well known to people like you who are in the business. You can give a range just like I suggested. It could be $200-$3000, or $500-$1000.

My recent experience with Dendra was horrible. I did 2 projects with them and Kat was great. The product was actually good. Now Kat is gone and the new guy "Braden" is useless. He has ZERO customer service experience. After 8 weeks of waiting for a quote from Braden I gave up. He is "absent" and doesn't respond well to any feedback or criticism. I gave up on ever getting a bid from him and went out for rebids. I got bids from Scherr's and the Cabinet Face within 3 days. Don't bother with Dendra go to someone who actually wants your project!

This is very interesting feedback as a client of mine had the same experience during what I think was a switchover in suppliers or manufacturers. Kat was great and we worked on several projects together without a glitch. Too bad as the product is great 🤷‍♂️

@@hsdesignstudio I liked working with Kat and their product was very good. I have a kitchen and a bar area done with Dendra doors. The rest of the house will now be done by Scherr's. I am not sure why Dendra is dropping the ball on repeat customers like me. I concede my order was complicated - custom slab mahogany veneer with grain matching - but the other two suppliers had a bid to me in 2-3 days and Dendra only got back to me after I wrote them to let them know they had lost the order - after 8 weeks. Braden couldn't understand why I was upset. He is clueless.
@DendraDoors
@DendraDoors 22 дня назад
@@michaelnielsen387 Hi Michael, Braden has been with Dendra Doors since the revamp in 2014 (not new to the industry or our business) and Dendra Doors has been and continues to be a leader in the industry providing customers with exactly what they are dreaming of. Our company is fair to all, no industry professional or repeat customer gets preferential treatment. For Transparency Michael, your original order was placed with our previous manufacturing team which we had been working with since 2017 and they had stopped finishing their products in 2023, so we moved on. Our new manufacturing team, who is a leader in the cabinet fabrication industry, was still fine-tuning details for our wood and painted products to ensure that our parts are shipped and ready for a seamless installation. This is not new information to you as it was stated in the various email conversations. There are only a few “custom IKEA products” companies that still manufacture their products in house; most have a 3rd party manufacturer, including ours. This keeps the overall cost of the product down and allows for a much better end product. Your quote should not have taken the length of time that it did to together - 2 weeks is reasonable, and with every email communication our team at Dendra Doors provided we continued to explain why. We are happy that you were able to get your project completed without any issues using one of our competitors with the urgency that you were expressing. For transparency regarding your specific quote, we were provided the initial details on March 21st which included grain matched plain sliced cherry slab fronts and other pieces. Our manufacturing team took your information to quote once details were cleared up on March 28th. During the time that the quote was being processed, we were provided further details by you (April 18th) which would have cleared up a lot of questions that the manufacturing team had from day one which would have reduced the length of time from March 28th. Braden had been diligently working with the manufacturing team answering questions and helping dial in your quote to reduce any chance of errors as you were very adamant about and stressing by emails over during the process. As our manufacturing team was updating the quote and was finalizing the new details, you had then sent another an email on May 25th showing your displeasure (without animosity as you stated by email) and that you had moved on. Again, we are happy that you were able to complete your project without issues and wish you nothing but good luck with all future projects that you come across. Respectfully John Owner of Dendra Doors.
