Another method you can try is the good old lion and elephant tactic. Fight it with your station til the station falls. Then once you get a green check for a clean disengage; retreat. Then repair at the planet and move back into while they are still weak. Repeat til they are dead.. I know you streamed this and wish i was there to assist (with permission of course) Other than that great video.

I don't care about save scumming, this game is about three features away from becoming a full-blown RTS roguelike. I'm just hare for the plays.

The m.o. of your Invictus seems to be to use its barrage ability, fire until it has full flux, and then just sit there with full flux doing nothing. I haven't played this patch yet, so I don't know if a different pilot would do that better. Silly A.I.

For some ships the AI just control them terribly and that's just how it is, unfortunately, but that even makes sense in real life. The average person behind the wheel of a supercar is going to drive it horribly, often into trees, walls or other cars. Pilot skill is important ( or driver skill )

Cheers for the episode, I'm a proud save scummer, but I can understand if it is not desirable :D Regardless, it was definitely warranted given that Ludd 5 stack, crazy that a faction would launch something like that, relatively early on.

Some of the difficulty in this encounter is definitely from your self-imposed limitations, which I think is really interesting! The whole "I don't trust anyone enough to buy a ship from them / don't have the ability to make them myself" really puts a fun wrench into the plans. While it might not help immensely, I think your Paragon's loadout could be adjusted a little bit. High Scatter Amplifier isn't doing you any favors, and the range mismatch on that Tachyon Lance with your Plasma Cannon isn't ideal. Pairing the Plasma Cannon with the Autopulse Laser would match their ranges and give you a solid source of hard flux on your hardpoints. Putting your Tachyon Lance on one of your turrets (and removing HSA) would help you defend your flanks and your rear (those turrets can shoot more than 180 degrees behind you). Another tactic that COULD help but might also be a wash is to keep an eye on that "Clean Disengage" checkmark in that upper-right corner, along with a possible respec into Field Repairs. You could engage, kill JUST enough enemies to get a clean disengage, and retreat. With Field Repairs, you'll get back most of your armor and hull. You'll also come back to the battle with refreshed PPT (though your CR may take a hit), so you'll be able to handle that extended battle and whittle down the enemies. Anyway, that's enough rambling from me. I'm going to see how this all pans out (got about 3 more episodes ahead of me until I catch up). I hope you find a strategy that works to get these Ludds out of your business! :)

Tach Lance goes "Hmm... Hmm..." and stuff goes "Boom!" Love those things. Really solid first battle. Sitting here trying to mouse over the ships on the video so I can look at their Armor damage. Hehe. Enjoying the hell out of this series. Continuation airs Sunday right? Hopefully I can make at least part of it. Watching this live will be fun.

I'll be blunt, this is the first Starsector playthrough I've seen so my questions might be dumb. Rhad you are doing amazingly well coming up with strategies on the fly while explaining and streaming with a camera on your face, no pressure on the reloading due to insane enemy numbers!! Question 1. Do enemy fleets ever split up, i.e. could the big fleet be whittled down somehow by attacking only part of it? Question 2. Can an AI controlled ship do better without the stupid pilot's commands, to simply more literally follow the players commands? In the video, Rhad's Invictus was clearly hamging back to only engage at its longest distance weapons. If you hadnt assigned a "captain" would it have gone directly to the marker Rhad placed, or would it have still retreated to "correct attack range"? Just not sure what the captains accomplish... or sre they passive buffs like with the MC Pilot, where Rhad reassigned his skill points to make himself a better marksman, etc?

1. Enemy fleets don't split up, but you can field your own AI controlled picket fleets that will help to reduce the total strength of enemy fleets. Unfortunately I don't have my defense fleet ready for an attack like this. 2. I am not sure what you mean by stupid pilot commands, but the game is designed in such a way that there's a very limited scope of orders you can issue to your fleet so that you don't spent the combat time as a battle tactician but instead as a fleet commander. Also sometimes ships are just flown poorly by AI.

Each captain has a "personality". Reckless pilots will tend to dive in at enemies so they can fire all of their guns. Timid pilots feel like failures if they get in range to fire anything.

Looking how that Invictus is being handled by the AI, I'd recon it should be forever renamed to "AA Karen". And the AA being the other meaning, cause that looks to be a pilot under some influence 😊 (hopefully it's just not having a fitting pilot)

I have to say, this is the first playthrough the enemy is sending so large fleets to interdict commerce. So far capital ships were usually later waves if you pissed off a faction badly, or AI inspections, not commerce interdiction. Was this patched in recently?

New Colony Crisis events. Each of the Factions has a different reason for wanting to either takeover your worlds, or wipe them out of existence. The Crisis counter accumulates points based on the various factions desires, and at a set amount of points an event gets queued. Then when it hits the next number of points, the event fires. You can "reroll" the event by dropping the counter below a certain number, and some of them you can actually disrupt by various means. It's a fairly simplistic system, but there's a number of ways you can counter or respond to each of the events. - This Ludd event is actually one of the smaller ones in terms of fleet size. Sadly, the other options to deal with this are pretty much negated by the scenario rules. So it's down to the grinder.

This was a new system introduced in .97a and it goes HARD, FAST. There are ways to prepare for it, but I was just unprepared.

That's what they do from time to time, but honestly its even more frustrating when I design missile frigates to just launch long range missiles and they close to engage and die

Its what I had a disclaimer last episode, that and this is like hour 11 of a 12 hour marathon, streaming for 12 hours straight takes stamina and wavering towards the end is normal. Not an excuse, per-say, just perspective.

I always get frustrated by the way you command ships in this game. Its so annoying when they just dont do what you tell them to do. You really should be able to give a command like, assault, defend or hang back etc. I know you can issue those sort of general commands but they really dont listen.

Commands in the game are more or less directions you give to ships, far less of actual commands. That's probably for the best as listening to the letter of the law would likely require a lot more micromanagement pulling you as a captain out from combat and instead making it more like an RTS with a terrible HUD and overlay. It frustrates me but I understand why it is the way it is.

@@Rhadamant To add on, the only real direction you are ever giving is designating a tether point to a location or ship and suggested rubber banding length from that point determined by the ship's weapon loadout and modified by the officer's personality. Keeping that in mind you can achieve outcomes approaching those specific commands, but it takes setup, is situationally dependent, and can be double edge sword. I'm *terrible* at the direct control aspect of battles, so I've focused on the command aspect and it's grown on me. For the most part I only issue positional commands with a focus on maintaining a cohesive line then transitioning either to divide and conquer or encircle and destroy. There's certain rare instances where I'll issue more direct commands, but generally the outcomes you or I think of when thinking of "engage", "destroy", etc. are better achieved through location orders at weakpoints in the enemy line where there's less variables to throw off the AI.

The only command that they WILL follow to their death is the DESTROY command. They will wade through hell itself to get it done. One of my mainstay strategies against an overwhelmingly powerful enemy is to position all my fleet at the bottom of the battlefield, a.k.a. from where your ships come in. This will accomplish two things: One is that the enemy will not the able to envelop your fleet, the second is allowing you to beat a organized retreat if the need arises.
