I really want it. But I think about how much of a downgrade it would be going back to cord away from tpcast. I don't know when wigig will come out. I'd rather wait it out a bit longer and see what happens. I'm not in a rush I guess...bat man it looks comfy, plus upgraded headphones and resolution and it's not as bulky. I'm trying hard not to buy it.

My Vive has paid for itself in time used many times over, since my day 1 preorder (I was 3 minutes late which translated to it being 3 weeks late) I have preordered the Vive Pro as well. Just because a game doesn’t require and increased resolution doesn’t mean it won’t benefit from it. Plus, it’s my next step in iterating my Vive. All that will be left are the controllers and base stations. And wireless adapter, but that’s expansion and not iteration yet. In the end, even at a high price, I want to see VR funded through the early years so it can get up to retina screens, onboard computing, or seamless wireless transmission. I will overpay to help fund development since they need wider profit margins to offset the smaller user base. That’s how I ended up $7 grand into Star Citizen.

Hi there, even the device is great, in my opinion we should not let HTC get away with that money grab. Over here in Europe we gotta pay $1000+ for the headset only which is outrageous.

The only people this product will appeal to are early adopters, who have already spent $800. Then, many of us spent an extra $100 for the Deluxe Audio Strap. Now, we have to spend $800 more for a mild resolution bump. You won't find a bigger Vive fanboy than me, but even I can't get behind this.

BeyondPostal I use my vive a lot and for me I don't have any real problems with the resolution of it so I don't really see the pro being worth $800. I'm also interested to see what it will take to drive 90fps to drive It because my 1080 has issues with some games as it is. I have sli but if it's not disabled that alone will cause problems and I'm not upgrading till the GPU prices come down.

I will be pulling the trigger on the HTC wireless solution and possibly knuckles controllers before burning $800 on a Vive Pro. Hopeful the PiMax can bring some competition to the table and drive pricing down in the future.

I know a gtx970 is the minimum for the vive. Does the vive pro change the requirements any?
@Telhias
@Telhias 6 лет назад
It undoubtedly will. Unless you can somehow downscale resolution to that of normal Vive which defeats the point of buying it. Seriously. If you consider spending ~800 pounds for it, while having GTX970 you would be much better served buying GTX1080 and using normal Vive. 970 is far from perfect on normal Vive, especially on newer titles.I wouldn't even try it on Vive Pro.

Got my Vive on wave 1. I had to pull over as I was driving down the motorway at the time! (To do the pre-order) I've certainly enjoyed using it and have no regrets, but I think I'll be waiting a bit longer before upgrading at this price. Especially as I'll probably need to upgrade my gfx card to something ridiculously expensive too. (Using 2 X R9 290X at the moment and I'm sure I'd be struggling with a higher resolution display).

I really appreciate the nuance when discussing if this is worth it. I don't think it's worth $800 any more than I think a flagship phone is worth $500-$1200, but if I decide to buy it's because I think that I'll enjoy the experience they enable and it's not money I absolutely need for something else. HTC know the vast majority of current Vive owner won't upgrade because they set the price at $800 (the same price as the original Vive bundle). The premium price means fewer will enable HTC to gauge demand for the future and produce a product that doesn't have to be rushed out the door (causing quality control issues). Those who opt to buy the new Vive Pro standalone headset will most likely enjoy the upgrades from the original, share their satisfaction online, and generate demand for the product when it is bundled and sold at a lower price later this year. This isn't HTC's first rodeo and it certainly won't cause mass hysteria at HQ that most people aren't upgrading to a product that cost $800 for marginal improvements. Personally, I'm upgrading from the original with no mods other than Vive N'Chill (which I love). For me, the upgraded comfort, resolution (which I should be able to push pending my 1080ti doesn't die), and ease of use is worth the money. Here's a little something I worked out that might help people sort out if the upgrade is 'worth it'. If you play VR everyday for a year, upgrading would cost you 2.20 at day, or $15.34 a week. I will gladly pay $15 buck a week to not have to deal with putting on headphone or resetting Velcro straps after anyone else uses the unit. The adjustments and frustration of getting the HMD to be exactly as I wanted it was sometime enough for me to just forget it all together and decide not to use VR that night. That's just me and that might be ridiculous to most, but if upgrading allows the experience to be that much less of a hassle, I'm all in. Maybe it's just safe to assume VR all together is way too expensive, the PC, the HMD, the games. Perhaps some of us just have less self-control and are irresponsible with our money. We'll probably all look back in 10 years on how much money we spend on getting into VR and wonder what sort of spell we were under.

My playable area is 11x8ft. I'm not sure what exactly you're asking in your second question. Do I wish I could run for miles? Yup. Most games though are built with the expectation that you will only move a few feet from center. TiltBrush is the only title that comes to mind that I feel really annoyed with the walls :P

Honestly Tribal, I would recommend you wait for a few months, and see what the Pimax 8K has to offer. If Pimax come through, it will be a "True Generation 2" VR headset, "Gen 2" Lighthouse tracking and "Gen 2" controllers based off of Valves Knuckles controllers. The HTC Vive Pro is "Gen 1.5" at best, and could become virtually obsolete overnight for the VR Enthusiast crowd.
@TribalInstincts
@TribalInstincts 6 лет назад
I tried the Pimax 8K at CES. I was incredibly hopeful and very disappointed. They have some serious issues to work out before I would consider using it for any amount of time. Specifically, weird blurring/stretching on the left and right of each lens. The FOV that they are currently advertising is far from truthful. Yes, you can see light coming from that FOV range however only around 2/3rds of it are at a high resolution while the other 1/3rd is unusable.

I think they're going to make a lot of money out of people who would pay anything for it. This should be a discounted price around $300-$500!! Especially if we have already invested in the current system. There's also no trade in program. We need to not let HTC swindle like this, if we don't complain it won't be accessible for the average VR consumer until 2 years from now when the Vive 2 comes out with a 4k headset after everyone else is at 16k. In which, the headset alone will be $600.

I very much doubt there are enough people interested in this product for them to make "a lot of money". A much too large portion of the potential market has already invested significant sums for a VR headset and won't want to buy another one for quite a while, is what I think.

What everyone has to realize is that this is an UPGRADE. Not a standalone product. I was thinking I could sell my friend my current Vive set, but it would cost me over $600 for base stations, controllers and gear. That's almost $1500 for a new set with the upgraded Vive.
@kpbendeguz
@kpbendeguz 6 лет назад
Vive Pro is not targeting the consumer market. It is a hardware upgrade for content creators. Since there are new hmds on the market with higher resolution than the original Vive, HTC needed to react before developers move to a different brand. For developers a hardware is an investment, so paying $800 for a hardware upgrade which is 100% compatible with their existing environment is actually a good deal.

Pre-ordered it the minute I got confirmation from Vive I could use it for business use, for our arcade it definitely makes sense at that price considering the Vive BE costs us about $2100 CAD a pop. Though I hope Valve hurries up with the knuckles, I'd rather not have to go to the reskined vive controllers when the new basestation 2.0s come out. We've already had to send off about 20 controllers for RMA in the first 5 months of being open 90% of which were from manufacturing defects...

Curious, have you had to return any units for sweat damage? In Europe at least, they are charging ridiculous fees for units damaged by sweat; and it has been pointed out that they have actually rewritten the original warranty, to no longer cover damage from sweating! Sweating is just a fact in the more vigorous games that have come to VR, and selling units that will be predictably broken by sweating; is like selling a car that will regularly stop working due to rain damage. And then saying, rain damage voids the warranty! :0/
@themadmadsen

Where I disagree with buying the Vive Pro is like all products Supply and Demand ... if nobody buying the Vive Pro at $800 it will drive the price down ... HTC have to adjust the price to reasonable amount . As long as there are buyers why should they reduce the price? if people can be patience and the number of Pre-orders are so low (or nil) will drop the price much quicker.

The Vive Pro is basically VR's 4K monitor. Is a 4K monitor nice? Yes. Would a 1080p monitor be fine? Probably. Do you even have the GPU to drive that 4K display anyway? Maybe not. So people who need the high-resolution display can shell out the money for it, if not they can just get the $500 model that's adequate. HTC is probably already aware that production costs would price this out of normal consumers hands anyway, so they've focused on getting the price of the normal Vive down to normal consumer level.

For $800 they needed better optics than what they had on the original Vive. Actually, for that price they need a lot more than that but I digress ;)

I just criticized other sites for letting them call it "prosumer" and/or commercial even though not one thing on it is commercial. Not the license, the warranty, the parts, or even the upgrade. They did not include better lenses or bigger FOV. No wireless or better controllers (confirmed on the "complete" package released later). So even though I enjoy your videos, it is not worth it. It is not commercial or prosumer. And you should not let them have a free pass.

If it were $800 for just the headset, but the headset was wireless, maybe. As it is, no friggin' way. I have no problem spending money on stuff, but I like to know that I'm getting some fair-ish return on the investment. The Pro doesn't seem like good value at all, for the money.

I can't justify spending $800 when I already have a perfectly serviceable vive. At that price point this thing needs to be a game changer and I'm not sure that it is

I *_REAAAAAAALLY NEEEEEEEED_* one of those ... unfortunately I will also need a new PC for it with more horsepowers* *=currently own a 7gen I7 T 1070gtx compact PC. It's nice but CPU has just barely the horsepower to drive current VR res, I doubt the pro will be in reach ... and the normal vive price also dropped to now 599€ (plus shipping) while I payed at release ~1000€ (including shipping) Sooo .... I just say I *_REAAAAAAALLY NEEEEEEEED_* one of those ...but nor right now. I wait till Ryzen gen 2 and 9th gen Intel ... or even one more gen since then those mentioned will probably be cheaper or at least that gen will be even more powerful and by then the headset will be cheaper as well ... or something new has arrived ... but at least then I have the money to buy that and a matching computer.

The way i see it , in my point of view , Is way too Expensive , considering you will need a Beefy PC to run it , that alone will cost $$$ , and then the headset another $1K , total of $2500 with PC , for casual curious VR people , stick with PSVR :) or Oculus GO

In all honesty, last year i wanted to see what that resolution would be like so i bought an odyssey and while the resolution was definetely better, what surprised me is that it wasnt gamechanging at all. ultimately i returned it and stuck with my existing Gen 1 tech. I didnt feel the price of the odyssey matched the cost over my existing headset. I would recommend that anyone seriously think about this headset for the resolution alone... go buy and odyssey and take advantage of the return policy if you are impressed enough that you need that resolution just keep the odyssey and f@#! the vive pro, ITS the SAME PANEL!

i can tell you with out even using the thing it is not worth 800usd just for the head set they need to get there mind out of this lul of people thinking that great vr needs to be pricey. like if anyone buys this they are part of the problem and you are letting htc mark up there products to unreasonable prices. And I hope that oculus does not follow this.

But the question isn't is it worth it if it is part your buisness and play it more than any regular user. To me "is it worth it" questions if it has enough value for the money compared to the competition or previous models. And I'd say firmly no. If your needs or usage are above the average then ofc it can be woth it to you personally, no matter the price. Seems to me like the samsung odessey has an as good headset, and it has sold with everything included for 399$??? Ofc it doesn't have as good tracking but come on. The inside out tracking and odessey controllers costs something to make as well I'm sure, still the package is about half as ONLY the vive pro headset. Wow. They want 1100$ for the Vive pro headset in my country btw. It's crazy.
@TribalInstincts
@TribalInstincts 6 лет назад
I've tried every major HMD at this point. As I've said before, Room Scale games with a lot of movement are what I enjoy the most. No other headset has tracking as rock solid as this so to tour competition point, for my wants, there is none yet(that REALLY needs to change...). Obviously RU-vid has influenced how much I'm in VR so your business point has some merit but not an absolute one. YT has made it possible for me to play a whole lot more games than I normally would be able to justify buying thanks to free review keys from the devs. If I had access to the same influx of games but without the "Business" component, I would be in VR just as much if not more. I think more because right now, I'm running out of time to play some of the games I really like because I need to stop and edit and then move on to the next game. Example: I REALLY want to play OrbusVR however I have a tendency to get sucked into those types of games. Unless you guys want a month long marathon of Orbus live streams, I should probably avoid for now haha Anyways, you are definitely not wrong about how you see the issue which is EXACTLY why I can't say if it's "Worth it". $800 is a stupid amount of money no matter what. If you don't have the dozens of small, additive reasons that bring the value up, it becomes a very hard if not impossible sell.

Not worth it, and THIS is coming from someone where VR is a job. You ONLY get the headset and are then stuck with another extra headset, one that you cannot give away or even sell (unless you want to deflate the price by a lot since it doesn't have the lighthouses and the new bundle price is even lower (actually, never mind, the BUNDLE is cheaper than rebuying the damn components!)). Now you know what is worth it? - The Deluxe Audio Strap. That sucker was worth the $100 I paid for it. It's a great add-on and makes putting the headset on and off brainless. - The new Vive Bundle. It comes with Fallout 4 VR. Let me repeat: IT COMES WITH FALLOUT 4 VR. That's damn impressive. - The Oculus + Touch Bundle. Yeah, even though I don't like Oculus, I have to give credit where credit is due, and their bundle is pretty hard to compete with at $400. - The mixed reality headsets. I've been seeing more and more people with them in VR games and... it's pretty good for something that does inside-out tracking.

That's OK if you can't answer. I'll answer... HELL NO its not worth $800 for a glorified Samsung Odyssey and Vive love-child. They didn't even upgrade the fresnel lenses, which is sad that a $50 Gear VR has better optics than a $800 Vive Pro. HTC is clearly just testing what the market will bare, and hopefully enough of us give them the finger and demonstrate to them that it will not bare $800 for merely the unit itself that doesn't even come with a full kit.

Assuming the Pimax 8k releases for 500 dollars like its listed on the kickstarter it's gonna be superior in every way compared to the Vive pro. It has a higher resolution, and a much higher field of view. I mean for goodness sake, the Pimax 8k X which has 2 4k screens cost 800 dollars.
@GiffysChannel
@GiffysChannel 6 лет назад
For the ability to run 2 4k displays at 60hz to 90hz, you will need a monster of a computer to be able to run it. The cost of that will be too much for most.
@ShinyTomb
@ShinyTomb 6 лет назад
Yeah but its the same price as the htc vive pro and it's drastically better hardware... IT MAKES NO SENSE! The normal Pimax 8k can run on a gtx 1070 and according to pimax there is no drastic difference between the two. Although I'm sure that's exaggerated. The Pimax 8k x on the otherhand is for people who want the best hardware money can buy. Also assuming the eye tracking module can do foveated rendering, you could run the 8k x version on a gtx 1070. Magical isn't it?
@GiffysChannel
@GiffysChannel 6 лет назад
I am certainly looking forward to seeing some reviews on the final product of that 8k x version. On the kickstarter page, they say the limited edition X version is going to be designed for the next gen cards. The $800 version is the one that will work with the 1070 and its not true 4k, its actually upscaled. Still better than the vive Pro in both resolution and FOV. I was really excited about the StarVR system but there hasn't been any news recently about it.
@TrevorJones1
@TrevorJones1 6 лет назад
the way i see it, if you are not already part of the HTC ecosystem, (meaning you have a vive already and thus already own controllers and trackers) its NOT worth it. Lets say you are a cockpit gamer, the increased resolution is great in elite dangerous, but guess what the exact same panels are in the samsung odyssey and it comes with everything you need to enjoy VR for half the price
