Thanks for the measurements. Both woofer and tweeter should be down about 3~6dB at the x-over point BTW, and ideally have the same slopes, otherwise the phase tracking isn't going to be great and you're going to end up with dips and peaks through the x-over region. Your measurements show mismatched slopes (ugh - that couldn't be cleared up via DSP?) and the bass drivers showing a ~5kHz peak almost exactly where the combined response shows a dip. Hmm.... I wonder what does the phase response of the two drivers look like in that area? 1/4 wavelength @5.5kHz is around 1.5 cm. If there's anything around the tweeter that resembles that dimension or multiples of it (what's the diameter of that mounting ring around the tweeter, for example, or how high is the tweeter mounted wrt the baffle that's holding the woofer), it could be contributing to diffracting issues affecting the response around that frequency. REW is a great free s/w tool for these types of measurements. I also use it and the "transfer function" method to minimize room effects on the measured bass response to get a much better idea of what the response would look like under anechoic conditions. Great stuff, thanks for the measurements!
keep in mind both woofer and tweeter were active during the measurement so a little of the woofer past that crossover will be the tweeter, not much but its worth keeping in mind i couldnt actually measure them 100% isolated like you would normally. so just right channel active but both tweeter and woofer active. of course not ideal but i wasnt going to open this thing up 🤪
@@alanrossreviews Ah, that explains some of the stuff in the measurements, then. I thought that the drivers that weren't being measured were disconnected during each measurement. The output from the tweeters can be significantly reduced during woofer measurement by taping some thick cardboard over them. Sadly, that won't be enough to block the output from the woofers. Seeing that you've already got the grille off, if I'd reached that stage, I would have definitely given into the temptation of unscrewing one of the woofers to see if it could be easily disconnected.... :-)
well i really only wanted to find the roll off for the woofer and the rollup for the tweeter, it didnt really effect that portion but yeah you are right, with more thought i could have done a better job 👍
You didnt expect a 24db linkwitz riley slope on a 170 dollar bt speaker did you? Many speakers do in fact apply a non identical slope, but they do have their own reasons for doing so, most probably to achieve their sound signature they wanted. Its not ideal but that is where things are usually 'manipulated'.
@@AbsoluteFidelity They should be able to do that and perhaps more with even the cheap DSP built into those BT speakers. Hell, they're already doing dynamic bass EQ/restoration via DSP on some of those cheap BT units.
Need to be honest with you Alan, thanks to you I bought the Tribit Stormbox Blast, and I just found my favorite speaker ❤ it’s the best one I’ve heard, the bass is so deep and good, and it’s clarity is amazing. I’m in love! you just got a lifetime subscriber and big fan 😂
Here I am, my friend Alan, checking your videos about the Tribit Stormbox Blast because... yes, I upgraded! I don't know what use I will give to the two Motion Boom, but since today I have the Blast and I'm configuring its sound. Tomorrow I'll get the second one to make my TWS too. I got them for €179,99 each on Amazon, I think it's a great opportunity that finally made me decide. My Motion Booms in TWS has given me many hours of happiness, and I'm sure my two Blast, starting tomorrow, will too. I remember what you told me about the Blast playing in a different league to the Boom. And it's true :) Thank you, my friend, once again ♥
Thank You for this video. To the contrary belief, I did not like this speaker specially for deep bass. I bought this yesterday, and I am disappointed. Only on high volumes bass might have its effect but on low volumes, for me bass is not that deep. I had the JBL encore essential, I must say it is the best for me specially. I do understand the battery and stuff, but it is more of a home speaker. Planning to return Tribit and order a new Jbl EE. Using your EQ. Love your videos. At last do you have any tips for the deep bass at low volumes around 40%?
well you would need to reduce mids and highs but this speaker does have issues on some units not producing bass. you might want to try returning it for a replacement to see if yours is faulty.
New Subscriber here Alan! Please may you help me... I have a Dockin D Fine and I'm unhappy because it has a hole in the Midrange. Its just so Muffled. So - would you rather replace it with 2 x Bose Flex's or 1 Tribit Storm Blast, and reasons why. Cheers Alan, Top Bloke
How did you remove the grill Allan? I have a vibration issue about my unit specially when I play edm songs and it's awful to hear. But sometimes I think it's on the left tweeter.
@@alanrossreviews yeah tbh it looks like they messed with the notch filter in the dsp and screwed up. I'll directly hook up the speaker wires to the scope and see what's wrong. I can also do a sweep while at it.
Hello there i got a question i got a storm box blast but one of the woofers sounds blown or weird ....is it possible to to get JBL BOOMBOX 2 woofers and install them on a tribit storm box ?
Alan..in regards to sound signature I'm just curious about something..the way you've described the sound signature of the tribit stormbox blast..(to me) it seems as though the sound from the TSB is similar to the Doss soundbox XL..I know the doss is a slightly older speaker and not as big (obviously) lol but I own the Doss and was just curious if in short the tribit stormbox blast is a bigger Doss soundbox XL..I wish you could understand how important to the audio/speaker community..YIUR THE BEST BROTHER!!!..thank you for all you do.
No the blast has a deeper bass, i wouldn't say they sound the same at all. I was not happy with the doss but i love the blast. But thats me and my taste of course. Tx for the comments 👌
Hi, I've seen this hack for tribit stormbox blast where you add weight to the passive radiators like 36 grams each radiators. It said that it improves the sensitivity to low frequency upto 35hz Does this work? What are the risks if I do it to my stormbox blast?
its way below what the woofers will drive, its probably just making it sound more upper bass heavy due to lost deeper bass for a tad more deeper deep bass.
Maybe the issue is - woofer reduce it's resistance and efficiency on 5.5KHz. This consume more energy from the amplifier and the power available for tweeter go down on 5.5KHz. Other option D class amplifier to have an issue at 5,5KHz...
I’m pretty sure this is my first ever RU-vid comment. Based on this channel I really wanted the Storm box blast. Well last night Amazon reduced the price from £229 to £199, so pulled the trigger! I’m very excited to be part of the hype! Alan your knowledge and enthusiasm is superb, I’m looking forward to getting the speaker and learning from your custom equaliser video for the SSB😎
There’s a chance that Tribit could remedy this by retuning the tweeters using minor adjustments to the lower trebles through a future firmware upgrade.
@@alanrossreviews It’s the sort of thing companies like Apple, Google and Samsung do all the time. So it would be the logical thing to do. Heck they have even been known to fix things like buzzing and rattling, which common sense would dictate is a hardware issue. A few months ago, both of my original HomePods started making loud popping sounds while being on standby, which led me to believe that it was an issue with the power supply, but shortly after, when people started complaining about it online, Apple released a software patch and resolved the issue. It was like magic.
Thank you so much for doin this Alan, so its partly because of the tweeter and most probably some added cancelation at the 5.5hz region. Should respond well to eq as its already well pass that x-over region. A quick question, how did you pry that pesky grill off? I want remove that ugly light bar regardless.
I'm happy with my two Tribit speakers I got thanks to Rose, also love Rose's EQ settings. looking forwardj to a video using a 3rd party EQ app to improve it further if possible.
@Alan Ross Reviews FYI, for some reason, on Samsung devices, the sound is insanely clearer, less muddy on the blast with Dolby Atmos enabled and your custom EQ, I mean like night and day. I'm using a Samsung Note 20 Ultra phone. I found it strange, but it sounds perfect.
Very disappointing again with the tribit unit,no TF slot ! I like your opinions on the sound of these devices, what is your favorite bluetooth speaker to listen to ?
A conundrum is my favorite instrument to use in place of a snare drum. 🥁😉 Anywho, your experimentation and testing are much appreciated, Alan. Thanks for another great one! 😁👍👏
Hey Alan, since we know the overall frequency response of that speaker, I would love to see you tune it the best you can even using a third party app to help. I would love to hear your personal sound signature sound the best you can offer, 😜😜
Finally it's out, can't wait to see your results ! By the way, my first Blast have some passive radiator farting (only on the left one) past 50% with bass heavy tracks. It's impossible to hear unless I put my ear next to the passive radiator. But it become obvious past 60%... (I haven't tested yet on my second one as it's doing it's break-in)
I thought I knew you. When I see a man in a purple wig with a boom box I do not expect him to be the kind of guy who would amputate party lights. We can hire a team of engineers to do some re-modeling of the enclosure and rewrite the firmware to fix this in DSP. But getting rid of the lights is overreacting.
I used a third party equipment app on my stormbox and the results are amazing. I set the embedded app to flat and using Eq+ app I set it to flat and raised the 32hz slider up 4 decibels. This really produces nice deep extended bass. Then I raised the 16khz to +2 and the 8khz +6. Nice clarity and deeper extended bass. Sounds amazing.
i think so, i wouldnt pick up up the boom when i can pick up the blast. but they are different price and size. but overall i would say the blast is pound for pound champ.
Interesting topic👍 The Stormbox blast really is a nice speaker and most likely the next Boombox I'm getting... well 2 of em😅 but I doint think 2 of em can beat a Boombox 3 but most likely a 2
Much better stereo seperation but the dips on the Tribit will make it lose outdoors in my prediction. I still have to see for myself and I also realized the Boombox 3 is a lot better than it seems to be on reviews
well yeah, ultimately the bb3 will go louder with more bass but at matched volumes really its only right at the deep end where the bb3 can out bass the blast.
Definitely lol I did relised 38 to 32 Hz in music where thoes frequencies are pushed it comes to life if your in a a decent sized room where the Boombox 2 just dies off completely. But is the UK still out of Stormbox blast I'm the US we only went out of stock once
@@l2azor07 its just not a speaker that i would buy, or recommand buying, its a freaking ikea speaker... Ikea puts those speakers in their stores as a showcase, and they have no idea about sound
another outstanding inside behind the scences from???? THE ALAN ROSS LAB!! HOWEVA!! ive seen reviews of the jblboombox3 against the blast. and the blast cant go down as low as the jbl. HOWEVA?? the motion plus mids and highs? very good, INDEED!! i say take the blast, jbl, boomplus and combine them for the???? FRANKEN BOOOOOOOMMMM!!!! and people said i was a drunkard for putting jbl boombox2 woofers bought off ebay and put them in a xg500..... it works and sounds killer!! JUST PAY SEPARATE SHIPPING AND PROCESSING FEES. fair middling... lmfao!!!
we need that video 🤞 yeah much like the bb2 the blast cant go quite as deep but sounds fuller than the bb3. the problem for the bb3 is that mids push, which means when you just adjust volume to your ears your gonna end up with less bass than a more level sound. the blast vs bb3 result will depend on exactly how you normalise the loudness.
Audiophile shouldn't enter the conversation with these types of speakers. You're up against the laws of physics. And unless you know what Thiele-Small calculations are, i don't want to hear it. Check that out and make your own set of speakers for at home. Save the BT speakers for the backyard and the beach.
They sound quite different and both do deep bass but the bb3 a little more. The blast sounds fuller, the bb3 has a problematic 700 hz peak than is masking a lot of upper bass. Neither kills the other, they simply sound different and one or the other will suit your taste. The problem for the bb3 is you can get two blasts for the price of one bb3
@@alanrossreviews ive listened to the stormbox. Im being a little bios towards the tribit because some people say some stupid stuff but i dont think its a bad speaker.. I think that it has potential but this "fullness" comes not from bass, it comes from boosted lower mids.. and lots of brands do that because the speaker cannot achieve enough deep bass to beat other contenders, so lots of people buy this as fullness.. It has similar craft to the boombox 2, Double woofers that play lows and mids, and tweeters. But in the boombox 3 i can actually hear the 3 way system with no lots of crossovers... My main setting on the boombox 3 is mids and highs on +2 and bass on normal. Indoors its the perfect setting for under 60% volume And it sounds better than the tribit indoors It doesnt have that deep ratteling feel like the boombox has.
clearly bb3 suits your taste which really is the point. the difference in deep bass is not huge. its 50hz and down where the bb3 takes over but it does have stronger mid bass in xbass mode. in xbass mode only those low notes really make the difference, bb3 having that rumble factor which is a bit muted on the blast. but as i said, two blasts or one bb3? for me its a no brainer.
@@pixelreflectorpro If you bought the shitty sounding tribit, you definitely take your mom to McDonald's on mother's day. Anyone who takes mom to McDonald's, is a low-life degenerate.
@@pixelreflectorpro Yes, it says HONESTY and INTEGRITY. Your reply says LIE LIE LIE. Flossy Carter, the foremost expert on Bluetooth speakers, has eloquently reviewed both the JBL boombox 3 and the tribit. And it's a no-brainer, the JBL beats it. However, to be fair, weak minds with no brains, will still buy the tribit. And, again, weak minds with no brains, do indeed take their mom to McDonald's and taco bell, on mother's day.
