Harrelson Hall- Fresh and uncut straight outta the 60s. The layout of this building is pretty inefficient, but I really like the common area at the top of the spiraling ramp! Filmed in January 2014 with ElevatingPirate.
Hey! I had a couple of classes in this building at NCSU. A few notes about Harrelson hall: * Yep, it's scheduled for demolition this month (May 2016) * Yep, many students disliked this building, as opposed to finding it's quirks endearing. * The stairs on the outside were steeper than most staircases, so they really wore you out when you were late for class. * The ramp is a bad choice when you're late for class... It takes longer than you think to walk in a circle up to the 3rd floor * For several years, this building was home to the Math Department * There was an urban legend on campus that the building was built on bad foundation, so they had to stop construction at 3 stories, instead of several planned stories. Sometimes the story includes the "fact" that the building is sinking * Technically it's 4 stories, but the "first" floor starts one level up when the classrooms start. This makes more sense when you see it from the outside, as you actually walk under that first floor to get to the start of the ramp. the building almost looks floating in a way. * Shopping carts sure, but how about a bug? There were also stories about at least one group of students in the 70's that got a hold of a beat up Volkswagen Beetle and pushed it to the top of the ramp as a prank * At 2:56, not only does the chalkboard stick out from the wall, but you can see (at 3:13) holes on the curved wall. These are relics from a time when the chalkboard DIDN'T stick out from the wall. That's right, they bent the boards to follow the wall. Real neat, unless you're sitting in the far corner, and then you can't see what the prof is writing! Luckily, this had been fixed already by the time I was there. * Harrelson Hall is one of only two buildings on NCSU's main campus that is not made of bricks. The other (and soon to be only) non-brick building is Poe Hall * As an aside, Poe Hall also has annoyingly tall step heights in its stairwells. * In the video, you can see that there is an inner ring of rooms and an outer ring as well. The inner ring is all classrooms, and the outer ring is made up of offices * Constructed in 1961, it was the first cylindrical classroom structure built on a university campus. That's all I've got... Cheers!
Hi! I’m a student at nc state now and this was so educational! Harrelson preceded me but i work at the call center and people alwayssss tell me about it so thank you for this 7 years later ❤️
Now here's what I don't get with more modern buildings of today. They just don't design them like this like they used to! It's because of stupid reasons like "it's too ugly" or "it's too futuristic" or "it's design is against the code for today's structures". Now why can't they ever designed any buildings like this today?! All of today's buildings are like art-deco revival or contemporary style or industrial rather than post-modern or even futurist style like this building is! It's a shame that an architecture marvel or wonder like this is going to be demolished soon (or so they claim!). Why?!
+Nathan Andrew Davis (Bantam Jeep Elevators) Well, I think this building really is ugly, but it's also very unique! As far as modern buildings go, check out some of the airports around the country- Denver, Indianapolis, Dallas, Dulles, Charlotte, Miami, and others. Cities LOVE to spend big $$ on their airports, as they give tourists and visitors the first impression of their city.
I like 1960s "form over function" buildings although I thought they could have made a better use of the cylindrical core of the building by making it a full height atrium rather than using it as a toilet block. Apart from the odd shape the classrooms have nothing distinct about them- they could be in most university buildings from that period.
Gardner High School (Gardner, MA) had 3 buildings, all circular. Nothing new to me. (Visited when track meets were there in my high school days.) University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University are huge rivals. UNC vs NCSU. But ESPN choses to denote UNC as NC University and NCSU as NC State (NCST). If you are from NC and attend either School you know the difference. ESPN is wrong
I was an electrical engineering student back in the mid-60s. Some of us managed to get ahold of a key to the key-locked elevators (only for teachers & staff). We didn't have to wind our way up the ramp or freeze our bippies on the outside stairs! 😁
