I first saw Rudolf Nureyev on American TV in 1961 , shortly after his defection to the West. I was totally awestruck by his agility and talent. His leaps in to the air seemed to last forever and his charisma came right through the TV screen and took my breath away. Unfortunately , I never got the chance to see him dance in person, but I watched every film or TV appearance he made and reveled in his cat- like grace. Nureyev left us too soon, but he will always be remembers as the greatest ballet dance of his era , a true successor to Vaslav Nijinsky .
I first saw Nureyev in 1965 dancing Swan Lake with Margot Fonteyn and the Royal Ballet. I cannot describe the electricity that shot through the audience when he came onto the stage. He had a regal bearing that gave you chills. I saw him several more times over the years when he would come to Chicago. I've never seen another dancer with the combination of skill, daring, beauty and that indescribable charisma he exuded. I don't think there will ever be his equal again, at least not for me.
I agree with you. I saw him dance several times and had the honour of meeting him on a few occasions. He was a force of nature, a genius. There will never be another like him.
Beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing this video on one of the greatest ballet dancers!!!! The music with the video is splendid. A fabulous video of his life. It is such a great jo to see. A million thanks for sharing!!!
I really admire this great Legend of the Art World. Perhaps we could be partenaires of some great Ballet... I would like share a performance with him. Only in my dreams I see his elegant figure dancing a pax de deux with the best Ballerin on the history. Rest in Peace, my lovely Star. ♥️🕊️🌹🙏🏻❤️
Simply sublime. The greatest of all time, for me. The man oozed artistry, power and sex. Most of the principals are great at one thing or another. Nureyev had it all.
Let us not cry for this man... he lived a life grander than many of us ever will. He gave us all a gift... no so much seeing him dance, but knowing what is possible. He had a powerful, princely way of dance. Nureyev was further evidence (like we actually needed any) that the greatest dancer of this era or any other will always, ALWAYS be a Russian. The French that created the sport have nothing on the Russians who made it theirs. --May his name outlive us all, Dane Youssef
Belo, simplesmente belo! Ele e a dame Fontayn dançavam magia. R I P, meu ídolo do coração.
I'm almost finished with the Kavanagh biography - what an incredible, charmed and ultimately tragic he had! He died much too young...and I am thankful beyond words for your wonderful tribute to this brilliant artist and an amazing person that he was - it is so good to find others here who still remember him, and that he continues to inspire... Thank you, merci, spasiba!
A great light was born 70 years ago today - this tribute rekindles that light for we who beacame dancers after seeing it for the first time so many years ago, thank you!
Absolutely beautiful video. Nureyev was proof that man can fly...he was physical perfection, incredible talent, and pure energy. Thank you for sharing your tribute.
My ballet teacher told us that we had to dance it like it isn’t in order to make it look so real and true and good. Nureyev trained our eyes to see the truth of the illusion. A miracle when I could fly, very briefly, myself. It’s like being part of a magical mystery. You don’t want to ever wake up!! Thanks to him, part of me NEVER DID. THANK GOODNESS YURI. 🥰
You captured his energy, vitality, musicality, zest for life, and great dancing ability. As a young man, he was incredibly handsome. That cute and open smile could charm anyone - anyone. We are fortunate to have so many videos of his dances. Have a look at his performance of L'Apres Midi de Faune - an often overlooked masterpiece. It is on yt.
Yes he would have been 70 years old!!! I can't even figure out how he would have been like... But that's so comforting to see that other people still have a thought for him today! Happy birthday Rudi! May you dance forever with Margot, Erik and all your friends...
Underrated? You must not have been alive when he was dancing! The fanfare he & Fonteyn created would have completely removed any chance Barishnikov could have had for a dazzling headline - I do not exaggerate. Careers of other excellent soloists even were destroyed because public acclaim was obsessed with (and ticket sales confined to) the scorching electricity between Margot & Rudi.
makes me very sad.... he passed away too early. may he rest in peace after such an extraordinary life as an artist! ciao, rudolf, bello e invincibile, bello e incomparabile!
GRANDE!!
There was a sadness about him even though not one image of him ever hints at it. He was so hauntingly ethereal and so, SO beautiful. Eight years behind the other dancers and never able to go home to his mum, he must have been desperately lonely inside. I'm guessing, but I suppose that drove him to be the greatest. A shame someone in American politics (at the time) couldn't have helped him mend relations with his native country and bring his mother here or let him go back freely. He gave America so much, it just seems only fair to have given him at least that.
Tracy Pfau You must be very young.... At the time the communist borders were uncrossable.... nothing could be done .... the political situation was truly beyond belief.... he suffered greatly because of that , because of his immense decision.... his family suffered too .... and not only psychologically....
My understanding of his defection while he was in France is because he had been told that morning that he would not continue on with the group to England, but was being sent back to Russia. Their excuse was so that he could dance for some special occasion, however, he knew better, and was convinced he would be put into a gulag (prison) because he had been living freely in Paris and not following orders. This is exactly the kind of thing the Communist Soviet government did to those they could not control. There was absolutely nothing America could have done for him politically. There is no way the Soviets would have allowed any of his family out. He did eventually return in 1989 when things were starting to relax and communism finally failing in Russia.
Thank you LysFlower13 for your beautiful homage to Nureyev. I have watched this so many times. He was the essence of dance and the personification of freedom. A breathtakingly brilliant artist and a very courageous man with the best smile ever. My favorite quote: "I cannot reduce my passions to your restrictions." So Rudi. So real. I miss him too.
Gosh, I've just read all these comments and now I'm crying. I loved Rudolf from the time I heard of his death and I will always remember him in terms of his awesome talent and incredible beauty. Very unusual for a man to be that lovely. So happy he still touches many people and thank you so much for creating this tribute - I stumbled upon it today and very happy I did!
I thank God we had cameras to catch a peep at Godliness, perfection. It will never be repeated in our new world order. He was awesome, and I never use the word lightly
