Broke down in tears when I heard the news. This man gave me my childhood memories, and as a man growing up watching him lead our great club into history, he was a man of integrity. When he spoke everyone else listens. A man of stature indeed.
My friend David Stubbings who gave up his season ticket some twenty years ago always maintained that Walter was a lucky manager. Well if I was that lucky I would be living a wonderful life having won the lottery in a big house in Govan. Thanks Walter. Never to be forgotten

One of the greatest, if not the greatest managers Scottish football has ever seen. Delivered numerous honours and commanded respect from friend and foe alike. But for me, it was the man behind this alius. I met him when he visited my school. We talked, I spoke to him about how my father had recently passed away and that his football kept him going during his day's fighting off cancer. He smiled, put his hand on my shoulder and said "it's supporters like yourself and your late father that I worked for, lived for and strove on for. When we played, we done it for supporters like you who could escape such torture for at least 90 minutes." Brings tears to my eye that he's passed now. If it's possible, I hope you're having a chat with my old man up there Walter 🇬🇧
He was a man. A Rangers man. He was the type of man every male looked at and wanted to be. Dignity. Strength. Courage. Just everything a man can be. Absolutely gutted we have lost him. Walter epitomised everything that is good about our game. Honesty, integrity, supremely talented but so very humble. What you hear from those closest to him or those that have worked with or for him is just how great a person he was. Walter, we will never forget you, thanks for the wonderful memories. Smith was the manager for my generation of Rangers fans. Genuinely gutted and sad about his passing. I'll never forget being at his first game back as manager. He transformed the team overnight. True legend.

The 90s were mainly defined by two things for me.. a Sega console and Walters 9 in a row squad.. He inspired a whole generation of youth, even in the playgrounds as young kids we all knew just how special an era it was that was coming to an end and to then come back and lead us to a UEFA final with a bare minimum squad and resources and no doubt inspiring a whole other generation of youth is just exemplary. It was more than the results on the pitch it was the overall team spirit and feeling of unity aswell. Both eras that wasn't there in-between or since. Not to that extent anyway. Even losing 10 in a row and running out of steam towards the end of the season in 2008 were both proud moments and memories. Not to mention being one of Gerrards main inspirations towards title 55. Walter Smith deserves a statue there more than anyone currently associated with Ibrox so all these memories can be cemented for the future. RIP.

When Heart of Midlothian beat Rangers in the last game of Walter's first spell, he sent many bottles of champagne on their bus so they could celebrate in style on the way home on bus. Knew how to win, lose and draw. Dignity and integrity, humility in his DNA. Some of today's coaches could learn a lot from that and many other gestures
