my mother shames me everytime she looks at my bald spots or thinks it is choice, she often asks me why do I pull out my hair? she doesn't understand how badly I already shame myself

mich2014 Parents make it so much harder when they don't understand or refuse to learn. Humiliation and shame is all they know when that happens. Please don't let that get to you - there is an entire community of people who do understand what you're going through and through them you will find support. Don't give up!

My worst stage was when I was in the 5th grade. I had patches of missing hair on my head. I did it without thinking, only now 15yrs later that my mom told me it was a disorder. I looked it up, and turns out many ppl have it too. Im 20 now and its not had bad as it was back then but I still pull my hair out. From my arms, legs, and head. Feels good for some reason.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was moved to tears because I felt exactly how you felt. Afraid to look in the mirror, afraid to see how much hair Ive pulled out. Afraid to tell anyone, afraid that people would call me crazy. Afraid to get into a swimming pool because I cant get my hair wet in public cos the bald patches would look more obvious. Afraid to get too close to anyone because at some point, they will ask me about my hair and expect me to tell them the truth, eventhough I am not ready to talk about it with anyone. I never believed that I was beautiful. In fact, I cringed when people came up to me to tell me that I look good/beautiful. Any compliments about my looks made me cringe and shy far away from the person. I did not believe them because Im wearing a wig. I never see myself as beautiful. Im 34yrs old and it started when i was 12yrs old. Thanks for being such an inspiration. ❤

I have overcome it. I have my eyebrows back. There are occasional moments when I put hands next to my eyebrows and touch them (e.g. during touch study sessions), but I don't pull them anymore. I don't wake up with unconsciously pulling my hair out, nor do I go to sleep only after I had my ritual. To all people out there who suffer with this: you can do this. I like being in control and I usually can control enough things in my life so it hit me really hard when I had to accept that I could not control my own hands. That being going on for years. It seemed like it passed and then it would come back, bringing this OCD satisfaction with it. My mother would call me a psycho and tell me to "just stop", but we all know how it works (it doesn't.) My best piece of advice: take it slow. I tried billion times to tell myself "ok, as of now, no more!". No. It doesn't work and then you end up feeling bad about failing yourself. I started step-by-step: 1. Try to notice when you do it - it got so bad that I wouldn't even notice immediately. I would wake up and pull my hair out being barely awake. 2. Noticed after some minutes? Great. Now put your hand down. You can't? Okay, take a few more out and then put them down and focus on something else for now (Rubik's cube, typing, walking, driving, anything that keeps your hands busy and makes it inconvenient to pull your hair). 3. Recognize the urge. It's hard to get to this step. But you will. Not necessarily resist in this step. Just recognize it before you do it (in step 1 we recognized what's happening after we were already doing it). 4. Pull less hair during your rituals (that you learnt to recognize) and keep yourself busy. 5. Try to resist as many urges as you can. The best way is not actively resisting it, it's keeping yourself busy. Eventually you will slowly progress to more and more hair present on your spots and less severe urges. And eventually even if you get the urge, it's becoming tiring to follow the compulsive procedure and easier to switch to something else and go about your life. I have not shared my story but I don't feel ashamed to do so if it helps at least someone, which I hope it does.

I started having this since I was in kindergarten and my grandma realized the balding. She told my mom and dad about how weird I was. As I grew up into a teenager, my mom kept questioning and used to yell at me "what's wrong with you?! are you having mental illness or something?" and sounded so ashamed and disgusted of what I had done to my hair (and later eyelashes). That was the time when I felt like I did a completely terrible thing but I didn't even know how to 'fix' myself, and I had to cover it up. I found out several years ago. I wish I could stop lol. It makes me so depressed that I can't even be myself around my family, have to hide this from them (they never try to find out that I'm suffering from trich), and have literally no one to share this with. But watching this video makes me realize that I'm not alone. It feels like breathing fresh air. Thank you for sharing, you're beautiful.

I miss going to the salon to have a hair cut and my hair professionally dyed. I am so ashamed of my hair/bald patches. The last time I went to get my hair done at a salon was 5 years ago, and the hairdresser parted my hair, took the small short patches at the back of my head and asked me what happened? I lied and told her I burnt my hair off with a hair curler... since then I never went back to get my hair done.. I cut the ends of my hair myself and I dye my hair at home... But I'm getting tired of doing that, I miss the luxury of having it being done for me, professionally. I'm just too ashamed.

Tanya, don't let trich stop You from what makes You feel beautiful and comfortable. Find a hairdresser, contact him/her before visiting and explain that You have this hair pulling problem. Ask if it's possible to come at time when there are no customers or less than normally. I know it takes guts and effort, but trust me - it's worth it! I suffer from trich since I was 13 and now I'm 24. At least once a year I visit professional hair salon and with each time it really gets easier

i think it’s really important that she emphasized her compulsion is not a moral failure. I really needed to hear this because I often see my mental/physical health mistakes as reasons to label myself as a bad person, undeserving and incapable. Trich really does a number on your self-esteem, especially in a culture that equates female beauty with cleanliness and goodness. Its assuring but also enlightening to hear someone deconstruct that- thank you

She's right about trich. It isn't something you can just get over with the snap of your fingers. I've had to wear a hat for my trich since the fifth grade. I actually started developing trichotillomania and dermatillomania around the second grade. (They are sister disorders and often show up together.) I'm actually close to entering college and I still haven't gotten over it. I have so many scars from my constant picking and pulling. I've actually been asked on many occasions if I had cancer because it was so bad. I've managed to reduce the hair puling, but it is never gone. I wish the best of luck to everyone else who has to deal with it. You are so amazing to show any confidence in yourself when you have this. I've always hidden in my hat and jacket even when it was 100+ degrees outside.

Ive been suffering from this since I was in 5th grade. I often wore my hair up and hats to hide it. I stopped when I got into seventh grade and a year later, I starting again. The only people that have noticed is my best friend and several teachers. I know that people think it's gross and I should stop, but I can't. I need help but people just think I'm doing it for attention. I just can't help it and people don't understand.

This was so great to listen to. everyone with Trichotilomania thinks they are alone when in reality, it is so incredibly common. I can relate to a lot of the feelings she was expressing. I pulled my hair (mostly split ends) for 5 years. I feel like it's a coping mechanism to help with anxiety however, whenever I would catch myself touching my hair I would just get more anxious and upset with myself. A week ago, I went to a hypnotherapist that was recommended to me. I know, this sounds crazy but I have tried literally everything I could think of in the hopes of quitting. NOTHING worked! I found myself feeling desperate. I am so happy to say that I haven't even felt the urge to touch my hair in an entire week!! I never ever thought this was possible as it used to be almost impossible for me to go an hour without touching my hair. It brings me to tears to think about. My hair can finally grow past my shoulders again! I can't wait. If any of you have the means and the resources, I highly recommend giving it a try. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulder.

I am almost 19 years old now and i honestly dont know how to deal with it anymore. To be honest, i dont have any eyebrow hair anymore and i pluck whatever grows in. I've done swim team since i was seven and i really dont know how i've made it this far. People used to ask me in elementary why i didn't have eyebrows and i couldn't answer them, be it too embarrassed or too ashamed to tell the truth. I've told maybe 5 people the real reason. lowkey tho im dating someone right now and dont know how to tell him lmaoooo guys

I want to share something with you guys, I know it's not a solution for what is happening inside of us that makes us do the things we do, but at least it helped with my hair. I wore a wig the whole time but I kept pulling anyway, pushing it with my fingers, but then I figured that at the wig store in which there were hairdressers, I could actually braid the wig into the the hair i have left, or even stick it with glue that was safe to use on the scalp. I kept it that way for almost 6 months and was going to the hairdresser everytime to wash it and then stick it again and my hair was healthy and growing through out that time and i was happy with the progress everytime i went. and now i took off the wig, my hair is full and healthy, a long pixie, i wont say that im not pulling anymore, but the urges are not as powerfull and i can stop more easily with pulling and i have no bald patches anymore. im still struggling but im definitely more confident. just wanted to share.

If there is anyone currently dealing with this it would be great to get in contact with you. I’ve been pulling my hair for 13 years. I’ll be 25 this year. It’s embarrassing and shameful but it’s not an act I can just stop. Even when I pull I think to myself, ‘I need to stop’ but continue to pull anyway. Even when I have a friend tell me to stop or do something else with my hands, it just makes me angry and embarrassed. Not because of them but because my action is being noticed and called out. So any support would be great.

I really hate that people seem to forget that trichotillomania isn’t just pulling from your head... it’s hair from your head, eyelashes, eyebrows, and other places. I’ve been pulling for 8 years from my eyelashes and my eyelashes only.

i´m so scared after 27 years of pulling and being completely bald , not having the urge to pull anymore my hair will never grow back. i am wearing wigs and only hope it will grow back. i am so tired of searching, paying, wearing wigs. but so scared i did too much damage over 27 years of pulling. 16 years after pulling my hair grew back completely. but now it hasn´t grown for a long time.. . stopping is one thing. but if it is not growing back, its the worst feeling you could ever imagine.

I tell my foster mum that I'm not pulling my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes everyday just to make her happy. I've never told a doctor and had a diagnoses but I know I have it. It's come to the point where I only have a few eyelashes (or none at all) and patches in my eyebrows and my hair as well. I gladly hide the patches in my eyebrows and eyelashes with makeup and putting my hair in a certain hairstyle everyday, but it comes to a point where I get bored of the same hairstyle everyday and sometimes I dont want to wear makeup everyday to school cause I dont have the time and energy. I just wish people can except that this does exist and people won't judge you for it. Im glad this video up on a big platform like because more people need to understand the effects it has on the person doing the pulling and how people can cope with it.

I'm trying to change this by trying a shock-watch called Pavlok. I really hope it works well, because it's been affected me emotionally and self-esteem wise. This video resonated with me so much. It's very hard to stop. I started pulling out my lashes when I was around 15. I'm now 50+ years. I still struggle. I have to remain conscious of this at all times and re-direct my anxiety. I hide behind liquid eyeliner and glasses. I push myself, daily, not to pull. This is my first time admitting to ANYONE that I struggle with Trichotillomania. ☺

@@morgan2960Hi there, I'm glad to say since I wrote that last comment that this year has been a lot better, I still have it, but it has been more controlled and less prevalent around my eyes. My advice for her would to be ahead of it, in that it is not her will that is forcing her to pull but a sickness of spirit. My worst fears were people noticing it. I would strongly reccomend a professional psychologist and hypnotherapy.

This hit me so hard. I've been going through trich for years and it got worse when I was attending university. It just became a way for me to relieve stress and most of the time I just find my hands running through my hair and feeling every strand, looking for a thick one with rough texture and then pulling them out. My hair's gone thin and I have tiny bald spots that putting my hair up or down is hard. I'm scared to touch my hair and washing is really hard because I'm afraid they'll fall off. I'm afraid I have ruined my scalp and that my hair will stop growing, that I will have to live with these tiny bald spots growing until I have no hair left on my head. I wish it's a choice but I just can't stop. I do it unconsciously. I'm terrified people will notice, I have social anxiety issues too so I can't handle the emotions of being scared that I will be embarrassed for having trich. I don't even know how I'll explain it if ever someone will notice. So far no one has made a comment about it but a nagging part of me keeps telling me that some already have but they're just laughing behind my back. I want to stop but unlike my skin picking behavior (I used to pick the skin on my lips), trich is harder to control. I can't explain how much better I felt knowing now that there are other people like me. I'm scared of being judged. Especially that I have a degree and license on the psychology field. My parents can't even accept the fact that I can be stressed and have social anxiety because they think the years of studying about mental health should make me immuned. I hope more people will understand that trichotillomania is real and it's not something we can escape from overnight

no ne .. your parents should be supporting you...helping you, not punishing you. Trich is not something we choose ! I feel for you sweetie 💗..I have a niece your age and this is the advice I would give her. Talk to your mom please. I'm sure she's just as scared as you. She doesn't understand what's happening to her daughter ( I'm assuming). I hope to God she listens I really do. My mom if I remember ( it's been SO many years) took me to therapy while my dad called me names ( weird, what's wrong with her, etc)...all the while I was wearing hats to school. You know that the more stressed out you are, the more you pull. It's hard to confide in friends without fear of being judged, laughed at or called a freak. WE know it's beyond our control, they don't know that. Jeez back when I was in middle school, even the TEACHERS were allowed to be rude lol! Pls find someone that you can confide in, to help you. Trust me...this is a terrible disorder to carry on your small shoulders all alone. 💗

No ne.. I can feel you my dear. Don't worry and be strong to fight it and know deep inside you are beautiful no matter what. Keep having confidence in your self. I'm 36 years old now and I do have this problem too since I was 8 years old. When I was at your age my parents used to beat me to stop doing what I was doing. I love my parents and I do understand how they felt back then, and It was beyond their ability to hold their sadness and anger as they were seeing their child is disturbing his own image, and I really forgive them for what they did. I advice you my young friend to talk to your parents about your problem. They will sure listen to you and provide ever possible help you need because they love you unconditionally. Stay strong and never ever care about any bully and stand strong in front of them and own your respect. Keep your self busy with the things you love to do. Do sports, go for swimming, learn some martial arts. These will boost your confidence, break any stress you have, and more, will keep you busy from these urges. Remember stress is the fuel of trichotillomania. Once you cut off the fuel, they fire will stop. Stay strong my friend 💪😊

The more i try to stop, the more damage i in cure on my hair and self image. I really wish there was some pill to cure me. It i very depressing. Every single thing she said is the truth. Its hard when people just dont understand. Do people really think that we like to do the things we do? When we dont even want to do that to ourselves and still be ashamed but that dont count that does not matter. We just love to pull or pick and bit etc. No people we dont want to do that we want to get better. And have help and get strong and be better. Dont talk unless you understand thats how i feel. but i over come the majority still lacking in certain areas but i trust in God.

I have had trichotillomania since last year but since I wear hijab I can hide it, but at home or whenever I’m with my friends, I get really self conscious. I try to hide it by tying my hair up into a huge bun but even then, I get a lot of questions and concerns. It’s a whole cycle of it improving and getting worse again. So I bought a hair fibre and it sort of changed my life, I just tap it onto my bald spots and it somewhat disappear despite it being the size of my palm. I haven’t gone to the saloon in years but I do wish one day I could go there and do my hair :( I don’t blame people around me for not understanding since it’s not too common, so only in the bathroom will I see the true me.

I have SEVERE trich, most of the back of my head is shredded up. Idk if there's varying degrees, but I was dealt a royal flush. I've been doing it since I was a 14 year old. I'm 32 now and I have bald patches that will NEVER grow back. I'm doomed to wear a beanie forever. My mom used to color in the patches with a sharpie. People don't understand why you do it. Honestly neither do I. But this is how things are. I've just had to deal with it. From what I've come to understand, it's not common in males, so I'm an outlier.I just wish every day that I didn't suffer from this. I had BEAUTIFUL hair. Hair like that dude from Stranger Things. The big perfect 80's male hair poof! That's not the case anymore. When I'm asked to take my beanie or hat off, I fall into full panic mode. I wish more people knew about this. When random strangers ask I just kinda laugh and tell them It's Mange. They usually just shut up and walk off....

Why not learn to meditate? Youll develop a strong connection and awareness between your mind and body and somehow youll find what it is in you or what part of you getting the pleasure of it and maybe youll control it in time when you are much aware of it. I also wonder in this very modern world when we can send people to outer space or other planet but no one can still find a cure for it. Maybe beacause we humas are good in controlling something outside of us but not something within us.
