What is Trichotillomania? It is the compulsion to repetitively pull out one's own hair, whether it's on their scalp, eyelashes or eyebrows. This video aims to provide a better understanding of Trichotillomania by covering what it is, diagnostic criteria, complications, treatment options, prevalence and comorbidity. We will also briefly discuss concepts such as trichophagia and trichobezoar as they commonly impact patients with Trichotillomania.
This video was made by McMaster University students Abesha Kuperan, Gurleen Sodhi, Aashna Agarwal, and Laura Venier in collaboration with the Demystifying Medicine McMaster Program.

It’s okay❤I have it too what I found that works for me is wetting my hair so that it is slippery and because I have dry scalp the sensation of the coldness in the water will soothe my scalp making me not want to pick!

I had the compulsive habit for 7 years straight. I then approached the habit differently by identifying my thoughts while pulling and the things that triggered me. Whenever I pulled i remember feeling intense guilt but I started to tell myself that for every hair I pull, there are thousands more that are yet to come. Stress and staying up late and focussing on my screen were my biggest triggers. I stopped staying up so late staring at my screen and doing work at night and that helped me stop pulling those times. Then slowly I stopped. It takes years and it's super frustrating and depressing, but I have stopped forever. If I can do it, so can you. Please identify your thoughts while doing it and don't be so hard on yourself. Best of luck, I believe in you.

15 years of pulling😣 my worst pulling phase is now. I can‘t go out without a beanie. It has never been this worse, where I have to hide my hair. But to be honest I have been through a lot in my life. My main trigger is anxiety and stress but it is also so satisfying because of the texture of my hair it’s very brittle and breaks off very easily and I don’t know what it is but it feels good. When I see my hair all over the floor and the destroyed parts on my head that’s when the guilt kicks in 😭

I actually cried when I took a pic of my head and saw that my bald spot has gotten more obvious. It's literally so hard to have trichotillomania :(

I’m sorry ❤but what u recommend is putting water on your scalp I found that if my scalp is wet the follicles are more slippery making it harder for me to pull them and cooling my scalp changing the texture and thus making me not want to pick 🤍

@@dorianlesnic when someone asks for help the right answer is never 'man up'. I wish you luck journalling and 'making choices' but it's important to know that many people try VERY hard to stop and don't manage.

I am 28 y/o. I am struggling with it since I was 11. There is no cure. I cannot control it. It's so painful. I want to get rid of it but there is no way. Nothing is helpful. I have tested a lot of ways but none of them was effective.

Well, im a girl, i had trichotillomania for about 2 years now. i got it at the end of 7th grade summer. i kept pulling it out near the front, so i wore a headband and had my hair in a bun mostly for the school year which hurt so much because i had it like that all the time which made me want to pull it out more, then 8the grade summer starts and my mom's sees what happing to me so she put my hair in braids as a protective style so my hair can grow and so i wont pick it as much but that didn't help i still managed to pull it out, nearly all of my head is bald except the back and i was starting high-school so i wore like a headband that covered my head but like i had a pony tail in the back with like 9 braids with the only hair i had left. And people kept on asking me why i wore it, and i just said because i wanted to, but that's not true and sometimes my friend would try to take it off which made me scared and anxious all the time so i pulled out my hair more thinking every day if that would happen to me and i would be exposed like my bald head so i wore that the entire school year and now it summer and im still having the same problem my mom said she would pay me 250 dollars to just cut it off but i declined she kept asking but i said no and i don't like covering my head so now i just stay in my room and make excuses to my friends on why i can hangout yesterday i was asked to go swimming said i was going to my cousins birthday party . I didn't have a birthday party for myself this year because im just so so tired of having to hide my hair to go to or do events so now im in my room typing this getting fatter each day loosing more and more of my social life and not being the person i was before so if you have it please try really hard to stop i know it very difficult but you have to stop it hurts and know i believe in you. You can get through this. Have faith and patience. i pray that when you read this, you'll have the courage to do your best and remember it could always be worse. we don't have all the problems in the world 😁
