Trick for Lubricating Cables on a Bicycle

In this video I demonstrate a quick and easy method for re-lubricating the brake and shift cables on a bicycle by re-positioning the pieces of cable housing. If one of the cables on your bike is experiencing problems, my recommendation is to try to applying some lubrication to it, rather than just replacing it.
The lubricant that I used in this video is just standard bicycle chain lube, but I'm sure many other types of oil are also acceptable.
If you have any questions about this procedure, please leave a comment below.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
Thanks for watching.

Thank you very much for the technique. I will be ordering brake cables, and i had to read a lot of offers from vendors. I don't buy Chinese. Your technique will allow me to ride with less risk while my order of brake parts and cables is delivered. I have checked and checked where the friction in the rear brake cable is (after some days of rain), and with some use back and forth of the brake lever, the wire is moving a bit better. This brake was the best rear break in my bikes, so i was disappointed what the rain, dust, high humidity, dust and temperatures in the 90's did to my best break cable. With your technique i think i will be able to get it working. The original brake cable and cable housing are ordinary, so it is not designed to last, and probably let's in dust and dries out in hot days here in San Antonio Texas. I appreciate your kind help 😁🤠

@johndevilbiss6607

@@cjhoyle It worked perfectly! I noticed that the housing/cable has two curves near the noodle (letting rain water in). I flattened one curve with a tie, and this also avoided some of the initial friction. Very nice, your solution. Most important is to realize how well bicycles are designed by these times, Even as to ease for repairs. 😳

It seems like almost everything is made in China. It's kind of hard to avoid, but possible, I suppose.

@ BPLove almost everything is made in China. What you don't want is "designed by and made in China." A lot of high end products are made in China but not designed or engineered by China.

For the front cable, open up the front breaks for slack and take the cable out of the break handle. Hold the housing straight up and let the oil run down the cable and into the housing.
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle Год назад
Yes, as I mentioned in the video, the access to the front brake cable is a lot more restricted than the others, so this is really the best you can do.

But my front brakes is hard to press, how can i lubricate it? Im sorry im new with this bike stuff.😟
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 4 года назад
Yes you can, but like I explained in the video, the trick that I showed here doesn't really apply for the front brakes on most bikes. To lubricate the front brake cable, you'll need to unfasten it from the brakes and remove it from the housing.

If you libricate that, dust will came. Well for a while if you dont want to spend any money on it.. Why not (-:
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 4 года назад
You could say the same thing about a chain though, and the chain is much more exposed and prone to collecting dust/dirt from the road. If dust is something you're particularly concerned about, you could always buy "dry lube" for your chain, and also use that for your cables.
@C0R0NAH
@C0R0NAH 4 года назад
@@cjhoyle well yes, that Is the reason why you have to dry your lubed chain with same cloth. Less oil on surface and the chain stay clean longer. Once you get mud in bowdens you get in to the circle.. Sorry for my English
