Rich, I must commend you on your product knowledge + your diagnostic abilities. Another marvelous example of how you performed when you were at the dealer. I would bet that half of the mechanics at a Ford/ Lincoln dealership never knew that these test parameters ever existed. God Bless & my best to your family, TMP from N.J.
@@clevejason Thank you sir. As far as I'm concerned Rich is one of the best I've ever seen & I've been doing this for a long time. I appreciate your posting sir, TMP from N.J.
"I would bet that half of the mechanics at a Ford/ Lincoln dealership never knew that these test parameters ever existed." We have to know them. Its not optional. We get sent to factory training every few months. On top of that, we just can't fix the vehicle however we want, even if you get it right. Your entire diagnostic session has to be documented and follow the diag procedures that Ford sets for that particular job. They're checked and if you missed any steps, or did something that Ford doesn't approve of, the RO will get kicked right back to the dealership, and they won't get paid for the work. That said, its not too bad. Ford has very specific diag information for just about every conceivable job you may get yourself into. Basically, you get step by step instructions for both diag and repair procedures. Even if you have little to no experience doing a specific job, as long as you follow the instructions listed in the workshop manual, you'll get it right 95% of the time. And if you're still having issues, you can contact Ford directly, and they have people that will try and help you. If all that fails, and you still can't resolve the issue, Ford will send an engineer to the shop. But the main thing is, you really can't cheat. Ford has too many things in place to check your work. Your only option is to do everything by the book. As far as Rich goes, he's way better than most techs. If he wants do stay with Ford, but not work for a dealer, 99% Ford would hire him directly and have him teach or make him a field service engineer. Those are jobs where they only hire the very best. You have to be.
@@FordBossMe yeah I went into some sort of test mode. You can do speaker test. Touch screen test. Color test. See part numbers sync versions all that stuff on the radio side. Never been into the dash side. Wonder if that will work on my ranger so I don't have to ride around with FDRS to see my transmission temp when I change my fluid

My 05 Taurus has this, uses different buttons to enter into it though. It has come in handy several times over the years. Our newer Explorer does too, our Fusion did, I think pretty much every ford with a display in the gauge cluster since around 05 has this. Lots of nerdy data to look at.
My 2012 ford fiesta you just press and hold the trip reset button on the dash for a few seconds and cycle the key. Works great and has helped me figure things out, plus it's fun to have a digital speed every now and again.
It works on the panther cars too, hold the reset button on town car and grand marquis and the trip reset on crown vic. A lot of info in there that I have no idea what it is haha but good gauge test and lamp test.
A/D = analog to digital converter, and counts generally refer to the instantaneous value of the input. The instantaneous counts divided by the maximum counts will give you what percentage of the input range the sample currently is. If the battery one is a 10 bit A/D, it will have a range of 0-1023, so a value of ~610 will be about 60% of that range. This would make sense for a 0-20v input range, and would correspond to ~11.9 volts. How's that, clear as mud? Thanks for the easter egg!
I was pretty sure you’d do this one! I knew you could explain the functions far better then most! Yea! So much on their, that you need an engineering degree, to understand! For me, I just want real mpg showing on trip meter, so I don’t have to get the calculator out every fill up! If my mileage drops, all of a sudden, I’ve got a good heads up, something isn’t happy in the motor! Many years ago, it took 3/4s off a tank to go what had been 1/2 tank! Spark plugs were toast!
Want to say thank you Rich. (youngest just turned 16, no more carting kids all over ! ) Bought a used Escape yesterday with the 1.5L. Just had a new block put in it. Wouldn't have even thought about it if it had the old block. I owe all that knowledge to your videos.
One handy test is to go into that mode without the engine starting, then go to voltage and note your at rest voltage, then do a flood mode start and see what the battery drops to during a cranking cycle, then release pedal and let engine start and see the voltage during the start cycle. Can help to diagnose weak battery.
I have a question. What's the protocol for when you diagnose? I had a Taurus SHO. Low load misfire but it could only be felt. No codes. I took it in and they wouldn't even look at it without codes. I went home, frustrated, and found a spark plug with carbon tracking. Very easy. Why don't dealer techs even check simple things anymore? Just a "no" if there's not a code. No checking the basic things, fuel, spark, air. If it's reasonable. I understand spark plugs can be buried, etc. But if they're easy, why not?
We always had to attempt a diag. Even though the misfire didn’t set a code it would have shown up on the misfire graph under the same driving conditions. Unfortunately not all shops and technicians are the same.
Thank you for this rich. I have always wondered why we cant get a message on the display with the code stored when the MIL is illuminated. Seems like it would be so easy for Ford to do. Just got a P2073 on our 2016 F-550 6.7 chassis cab. Cleaned the MAP sensor with MAF cleaner. Hope it solves the problem.
Good morning Sir, I have a 2019 ford taurus and always when I put gas in a full tank, it shows me that it's only 120 miles. Sometime it change to 185. But one time only it shows me that 305 Miles. I went to Google and I saw that the range is 320 to 456 on highway. My question is why it doesn't show me the 300 Miles range that it suppose to do and always stop at 100... everytime I put the full tank? Do you think there is something I have to fix??? Thanks in advance
2019 f150 3.5 Eco. It didn't work on mine, I saw it in the background but my truck says drive modes aren't available and disappears. I had the local Ford guys check to see why my drive modes aren't available and they couldn't find anything. Driving 200 mile to a special tech Wednesday, maybe he'll know something... Thanks for your vids!
@@shanerobbins5309 mine won't go into drive modes, it says not available. I can see the engineer mode behind the drive mode nat available but when I hit ok it all disappears. What I did find is if I turn it off and quickly restart I can get my drive modes. No check engine lights, ford couldn't find anything wrong...IDK just glad I can get into tow mode now
Rich, my 2015 f150 has been having issues with the media buttons for a while but right before a big trip now only the horn works on the wheel. Adaptive, cruise ok, arrows, doesn't respond to any inputs. Any advice?
You could either have a accessory protocol interface module problem with the radio that's causing issues with the steering wheel or you could have a bad clock spring or a blown fuse
2018 Ford expedition it didn’t work. Thank you very much please can you upload more video’s my expedition, coolant fan running too loud I check the main relay still does that? Do you know what causes it?
Could be ac high pressure switch causing the fan to run high Could be plugged radiator or ac condenser causing system pressures to increase and run high Could be stuck relay Or pcm commanded bc low speed isn't working and the fan assembly needs replaced It needs diagnosed
My 06 Econoline did that if I held the reset button for my odometer and cycle the key. I don't have a ok button on the steering wheel of my transit wondering if I could do the same thing .
Hey rich I have same year truck and dash how did you change to the built Ford Tough on the dash instead of F150 when turning your key on can it be changed in the same method that you just showed in this video?
When I first got my truck it said I was getting 21MPG average. Well after multiple hand calculations, it was closer to 17MPG. This is how I adjusted the AFE BIAS to be more accurate. IDK how the calculations were so off from factory.
I always believed that it’s easier to be nice than not!👍👍 Unrelated question I’m having to replace my 06 E-350 runs great at only about 220k but very very rusty should I buy one of the current series or the previous they are known to run 3 to 400k the current ones unknown, which would you buy?
Hello, off subject but can you please tell me if it’s safe to spray sea foam into the throttle body of my ecoboost in an attempt to clean out some carbon buildup?
Hello ford boss man , I have a 2017 f150 that has a speedometer sometimes reads up to 12 mph fast but the reads normal, will this cycling of the info help this inconsistent problem?
Well if you bought it used somebody may have some big tires on it and they reprogrammed it for those bigger tires and you have to reprogram it back to stock with the as-built data
Hey Ford boss, I have been having some issues with my cooling fans running almost non stop as soon as I hit operating temp on my 2018 F150 3.5EB. I recently had phasers, timing set, and water pump replaced. Temp gauge seems stable. But I don’t have a digital read out. Truck has the old style sport dash. Could I use this to find my true coolant temp? And do you think it could be a CHT sensor?
The only way that I know of that you can actually figure out what your coolant temp is is if the vehicle gets above 213°, it will start displaying the numbers on the cluster other than that you're going to have to have a scan tool watch all my other videos on cam phasers in order for you to understand more about it
@@FordBossMe great info, I’ll check out more of your videos. I watched the he one about the updated thermostat and I know that mine was not replaced during the phaser replacement. I was unaware that the temp would display on the cluster if it got that hot. That is a bit of a relief because that has not happened. At this point I’m considering taking it to Ford to have them examine it but without a CEL I’m not sure much can be determined. Thanks for getting back to me so quick
@@FordBossMe quick update, I ran my truck in engineering test mode for about a 20 mile ride, peaked around 230 degrees on the highway, I don’t believe the red sport cluster shows the temp above 213 (don’t quote me, but mine never has) either way. Got it home, water outlet hose was still cool compared to the rest. Went to ford, picked up the updated part# thermostat you referenced in your video and a gasket. Had it installed and vacuum filled with new coolant. Went on a long ride last night (about 50 miles mostly highway at 70-80mph) no excessive fan or temp flux. Fingers crossed but all seems to be good now. Thank you SOOO much.
This is a little off topic to this video , Is there a way to contact you besides YT comment ? I’m not even sure if you do that with your subscribers or have time for it. But if so I’d really love to chat with you and run a couple questions by you
You can't monitor system voltage but with it you can You can't check for dtcs but with it you can You can't monitor trans temp but with it you can You can verify Air Fuel Ratio but with it you can You can't verify more accurate mpg but with it you can Your comment just plain sucks because you didn't listen point blank
@@FordBossMe ya know what dude. You get triggered and insulting too often. With me and others for simple stuff. I’ve been a subscriber of yours for about 2 years now, I’m never an a-hole but you always comment back like a freakin jerk, so now I’ll just unsubscribe.
