Trick To Remove VW Headliner Clips

The headliner clips on the MK7 Golf family cars, and the Passats can be a nightmare to release. VW has a special tool to release them, but it's a pretty poorly functioning tool. With a couple of pocket screwdrivers, you can release the clips easy.

I noticed the door handle was getting in the way and you had to hold it down with your hand while pointing the camera. I learned that that little flap that conceals the clips doubles as a leg/kickstand to hold the handle in the down position. If it's a coincidence alright by if it's not it's such a nice little feature. I own a B5.5 Passat TDI and it's very convenient when I make trips or have to hang my ABUs for details to keep the handles in the down position when hanging a large number of coat hangers!

thanks for the tip Charles, it's a PITA to remove one of those, I have damaged one of the clips while trying to remove the visor. I use a modified/grounded nose plier instead of 2 screw drivers.

Broke two of four of these while removing them and I was patient and took over and hour. Used the two pocket screwdriver method and it was a very awkward tight fit on a 2017 GTI. Thanks VW glad you could save .001 cents and 2 seconds of factory line install but cost me two new handles @ $60 each. So dumb. oh great now I see the sun visors use the same stupid design!

Manufacturers have very little interest in making the cars easy to work on. Its all about saving a nano second during assembly. Far easier to just push the grab handle on in the factory than screw it on. Maybe saved a few seconds. Charles will have scratched his head many times wondering who the heck designed it this way. Its why lots of people who work on cars have constant cuts all over our hand and arms.

My Mk4 had Phillips screws in there, now my Mk5 has torx in there. Now these clips that suggest yet another "special tool" from Volkswagen. They like watching us struggle.

Volkswagen makes a "special tool" for just about everything. And if it's a screw, it's gotta be a torx or triple square, "let me go get my special screwdrivers". 😑

hi humble i have a 2004 beetle i need to change the antena . I removed the top trim but there seems to be more metal in roof blocking me from unscrewing antena? Do i need to take down the whole head linner ? Cheers i look foward to hearing your answer

Hi, are your rear handles tightly fitted. I have a 2020 jetta and i have to push them in. I hsd the had liner pulled at the dealer because my antenna was bad so idk if it was there from factory install or after it was put back up. I dont use them just wondering why i have to push them in the to lay flat against the headliner.

Had to deal with one of those the First Time Today on a B8 Passat. Had to Replace the Sun Visor. Couldnt get the Clips out without the Special Tool Pliers.

On a 2015 Passat the actual handle is exactly in the way of fitting 2 screwdrivers in there well. I found that you can first put it in 1 side, give it a good wiggle until you feel it coming loose. Then put it in the other side and repeat, came straight out. Getting 2 at once is especially tricky when the handle has never been removed before.

Yeah I struggled to even get the covers off to access the holes and gave up, why do VW make it so difficult.

@@fractalofgod6324 they don't make it difficult to take apart per se. They make it as easy and streamlined as possible to assemble in the factory. I have the 1 screwdriver method pretty much down with a bit of practice, it's not too terrible. Same method works for the sun visors but way more difficult.

Also the angle of the hole is facing towards the roof so you can't even see inside the hole to locate the clips

A worn out pair of needle nose pliers could bring ground down to create a one-handed tool, too, giving it new life as a general tight space grabbing tool.

+Cars Simplified that's what the VW tool basically is. It works okay on the Passat. But the GTI is it pointless.

Uh oh, I must be thinking like a German engineer! I'm not familiar with the GTI, the Passat in the video just looks like a good application for a tool I've rigged up.

Is the interior trim with the mirrors attached on a convertible beetle considered the headliner? Not sure what it’s called, and all the headliner removal videos for beetles I’m seeing aren’t the convertible.

I think two points of a fork would work to remove these. The neck might also have the proper curve. I will need to try it out when my SportWagen comes back from it's 4th sunroof replacement.

This didn't work so well for my mk7 Golf. The entry size is much smaller. I decided to order the tool part T10518A which you can get on Amazon for 18 bucks. However, this trick did work for my headliner clips. Though, a bit janky.

2018 SportWagen grab handle seems very different. The cover seems to key into the handle. Then there seems to be another key left behind. I can't seem to find info on how to remove the handle.

I think I figured out how to get the other 1/2 of the plastic key. I just need a hook tool similar to www.princessauto.com/en/detail/curved-hook-tool/A-p8262339e

What about the clips in the headliner around the sunroof on Mk5's? What do they do and how do I get them back on? I'm reupholstering my headliner, and it's turning into a nightmare project. Volkswagen probably has a "special tool" for that too, but I have some pliers and screwdrivers. I saw a robot put these in, no wonder it's difficult for us humanoids.

I have removed the handles with the help of this video but now I can't re fit them. Have pushed on them as hard as I can even tried a rubber mallet and they won't clip into place any help?

Be sure the bracket isn’t bent. They are like paper

I was able to pull all 4 handles out in the process of removing the headliner. Everything went perfect but I cant reinstall 2 of these damn handles.

You made that way to complicated. All you need is one bigger flat blade and just pull to have a little pressure. Takes me approx 5-10 min to drop the headliners in the passats from 2011-present, and you don’t even have to pull the A-pillars
