I think that one other problem to the mode is that TriColor doesn’t get its own stages. Just renovated maps. The renovations to the maps are fine, but it would do the devs wonders to actually design stages around the mode. I feel like it would also be a nice middle ground between Tricolor and Shifty Stations!
@YukichiReikyu
@YukichiReikyu Год назад
This is definitely the main issue with the mode I feel. For a game that's supposed to be going heavy on the theme of "three", Tricolor is still just using stages that were very clearly still designed for the normal two team setup. The triangular stage shape shown in thebipedalsquid's video seems like it would be a no-brainer for what Tricolor is supposed to be. (Though I did like how Undertow split the defending team into two different spawns on opposite sides; Quadcolor for Splatoon 4 anyone?) Another issue I think is the lack of variety. We're stuck with only one Tricolor stage for the entire time it's available, and we've already used Sturgeon twice because other stages just aren't finished yet. In an ideal world, each Splatfest would have 3 potential Tricolor stages either chosen at random or on its own rotation.

The reason I like shifty stations more than Tri-color is because there are almost endless possibilities for shifty stations but Tri-color is just tied to modifying normal stages and just make them feel so cramped. I feel like the point was supposed to be that it gave the losing teams in a splatfest a chance to catch up by putting the winning team into a more tough situation, but they chose to simply make it a splatfest exclusive game mode with 0 reason to be locked off instead of rebalancing the mode to work better with the original intention.
@squiddler7731
@squiddler7731 Год назад
The reason they changed it had nothing to do with the mode being unbalanced though. They changed it cause they realized that there was no good way to queue up players for the mode when they were always forced on either attack or defense and mirror matches were not allowed. It's the same reason mirror matches are allowed in normal turf war, queue times would get absurdly long if they weren't and letting people just play the game is more important.
@necrosoma
@necrosoma Год назад
The issue is that when you put people (the defenders) into a position where it's hard to play and not very fun, they will just not play. If no one wants to defend then there end up being very few lobbies, and therefore not many actual chances to "catch up" to the leading team. Before being on Sweet, I had only ever attacked, and I rarely ever got tricolor matches while being queued for it. Now that I got a taste of defending, I really don't like the mode. It isn't fun at all for me, and I stopped playing it. Because it's now optional for everyone, and everyone can be on either side, I don't understand the incentive to play it over regular turf.
@12thwindow98
@12thwindow98 Год назад
I get that it wasn’t fun for the defending team, but they should’ve rebalanced it to make it more fun for defenders too. They could’ve also just forced you to queue for both turf war and tri-color in one queue rather than separating it for no reason. At this point it’s just a mode that they lock off besides one day every 2 months for no reason
@squiddler7731
@squiddler7731 Год назад
@@12thwindow98 That's what they did before though, defenders didn't get the option to queue up specifically for tricolor and would just randomly end up in a match of it while in the turf war queue. Again, the only reason it was separate for attackers to begin with was a technical one, that being that the turf war queue allowed up to 4 people to group up, but in tricolor only 2 of them would be able to join a game. The only way to have them be the same queue at that point would be to randomly split up teams of attackers who are playing normal turf war every time they get into tricolor. Other than the mode being exclusive to splatfests for one day (which i can't come up with an excuse for), there is a reason for all this stuff and why it is the way it is.
@12thwindow98
@12thwindow98 Год назад
I feel like everyone should just be forced to queue up for tri-color though. Rather than make it optional for everyone, they should’ve made it compulsory for everyone and offered a higher reward for the defending team or something, they could even do it without that and just hope the defending team will still play because it’s the only choice.
@zenzangzong
@zenzangzong Год назад
I actually love the way that the ultra signal affects clout gain, because it adds a lot more stake to defending them. And while I understand the argument that the attacking teams work together, it's still not wholly true. Because a victory from the other attacking team nets slightly less clout than your own victory, so there is a slight incentive to fight back against them as well, "same team" or not. So while being able to play tricolor outside of splatfests would be great (and needs to happen after they're over), tricolor's connection to clout adds an interesting dynamic that wouldn't be present so much separate from the splatfests.

The exciting part about shifty stations was that they were brand new stages with brand new mechanics every time. Sure, there were some stinkers, but there were also some really good stages with super cool gimmicks in there. Bunker games still deserves to be part of normal turf war. What’s disappointing about tricolor is the fact that we don’t have anything exciting to look forward to for splatfest-it’s just tricolor again but on a different existing map every time. The days of wondering what the next shifty station will be are over.
@Saltience
@Saltience Год назад
Some notes I have on tricolor: The reason it isn't 3v3v3 is because as a special splatfest mode, a 3v3v3 wouldn't balance out any potential advantages that the leading team would have. It was designed around the idea that the two losing teams would gang up on the leading team, and a 3v3v3 doesn't incentivize that like a 2v4v2 does, and would instead lead to situations where the two losing teams end up eating each other alive and the winning team sweeps them up. That being said, 3v3v3 would work as a standalone mode without the context of a splatfest. The fact that the two attacking teams are different colors IS important. If they weren't, attackers getting control of mid means they can very effectively spawncamp the defenders as their spawns are barely protected and super close to mid, making holding mid unbelievably strong for an attacking team. By having the other side of the map in another ink color, it keeps the two attacking sides on their sides instead of moving to camp and support the other. The defending team in tricolor ironically doesn't need to prioritize defending the ultra signal so much as killing the attackers. Killing one of the attackers on a side will likely delay their push until respawn and regroup, allowing you to build up specials to repeat the process. It's generally a good idea to have one defender on each side be really aggressive and try to paint the attacker's bases, as that keeps them away even longer. Shoutouts to wavebreaker, the best defender special in the game since you can pop it directly onto the ultra signal to massively bog down any push and also to keep one side away while you deal with the other. Finally, tricolor is very fun.

Unrelated, but like you said, the current implementation of tricolor definitely feels really… we aren’t sure what the devs want to do. But I do like this feeling of an Attacker vs Defender game mode. @EclipseKirby
@EclipseKirby Год назад
I do find the whole "attacking teams can attack each other thing" interesting. It is true that both attacking teams are working together and both win equally when either has the most turf. But what makes it interesting is that which team grabs the ultra signal is NOT equal. The team that grabs it gets clout exclusively for their own team. And considering the ultimate point of Splatfests is to get the most clout for your own team, that's important. So when you're an attacking team and the other team grabs the Ultra Signal, you have a decision to make. You can let them have it, increasing the odds that you both win, but allowing that other team to get even more clout than your team. Or you can take the greedy route and stop them, hoping your team will get the extra points. What decision is worth making is arguable and depends on each team's positions at the time. If your team is currently in 3rd at halftime, you're playing Tricolor attacking with the 2nd place team, and they grab the Ultra Signal, do you allow it? Letting them grab it will help you against the 1st place team, but it will further the 2nd place team's lead against your own. But if you stop them, your team might be able to get it later to increase your lead on both teams, but you run the risk of neither of you grabbing it and letting the 1st place team further their lead. Which is worth it? I think this sort of thing makes it more interesting than if both attacking teams simply could not attack each other.

I think a big misconception is assuming the attacking teams are on the same team. Yes, they want ONE of the attacking teams to win, but they also want to BE that attacking team. You get less clout and it doesn’t count toward the actual win count for splatfest results, there’s absolutely zero way that Nintendo doesn’t want the two attacking team to attack each other for the ultra signal too. Yes, this will sometimes cause both teams to lose, but this is a competitive mode only in the sense that it’s literally a competition, expecting anything less than getting backstabbed for splatfest points is foolish. I feel this is less a problem with the mode itself and more the mindset going in. Winning is your objective, but winning for you OWN TEAM takes higher priority.

I personally prefer the shifty station stages still because tricolor in its current form just doesn't offer nearly as much variety as shifty stations does, and a lot of the gimmicks for shifty stations end up making for what are essentially new game modes, like them or not. And they're just pretty hecking cool, like the one where certain areas get locked down after a while so they are no longer inkable. Or the one with turrets. I know there is concern that the Switch couldn't handle anymore than 8 players, but 3v3v3 is only one extra player, surely if it can handle the likes of Salmon Run, 16 Ice Climbers in Smash, or 12 players in Mario Kart 8, there would be some sort of technical wizardry to make 9 total Splatoon players run smooth enough to work

My 2 cents on the 3v3v3. I don't think we can assume the servers are configured to actually support that many players if they are active. Just because you can add 2 players in spectator mode (on top of the original 8) does not mean that suddenly the servers can handle those players adding more paint, interacting with objects, etc. There's a good chance they'd be chugging trying to keep up. There's also a lot of interface changes they'd need to make for 3v3v3. They'd need to change the length and animation of the game start and victory animations (those are only set up to have 4 players per side on it), theyd have to change the music to line up with that animation, the mini map interface showing other players gear would have to be reworked, the interface at the top of the screen that shows which players have weapons/which are alive would need to be reworked, + other stuff I'm not thinking of I'm sure. I'm assuming they kept it 8 players and still basically 2 teams of 4 to avoid needing to fix all of these things Not saying they couldn't successfully pull off 3v3v3 but it's not as simple as "all you have to do is take tricolor and add another player (and change the spawns)"

I finally got to go in on splatfest and play some tricolor battles and I loved it in the chocolate splatfest. I figured out the timer on the Ultra Signal pretty quick. I also liked how the two attacking teams are kind of pseudo allies. We're on the same team but that's by necessity not by choice since we're playing for two different teams. It will need changes come the end of splatfests if they keep it (they better) but its so dang fun in terms of splatfests. Also yeah spawn camping is best but at least in metalworks for the chocolate splatfest it wasn't easy since spawn had two routes you had to 1 v 1 all the routes to ensure someone was everywhere and someone was going to get in regardless if you spread out that much without a long range weapon. It was always just easier to create a more solid and wide barrier of paint around the signals to just force them to go through and make one final push in the last 20 seconds. I love tricolor, I played tricolor as exclusively as possible during splatfest and will continue to do so in the future. It's too fun. Also I don't like a 3v3v3 just raw because from a single teams perspective its 3v6.

I’m always so hyped for the Splatfest simply because of this mode! I think for people who play more turf war than ranked, this is a good mix of the two! you have to get the strategy of Ranked modes whilst also simultaneously playing a regular turf war! Also i totally agree about tri-color being an option for just regular modes, i think it honestly should be treated somewhat like ranked where you have to get to level 10 to unlock it, but i think it would be so cool just to even do it as a casual mode!!

During the last splatfest I was cursed and after more than an hour playing, never got to be the attacking team. I have definitely noticed that spawn camping is really effective but makes playing less fun because you know that the other team is crying and throwing their switches at the ground exclaiming that all the people who say that tricolour is so much harder as the defenders are wrong.

I really love the nuanced strategy of playing Defender in Tri-Color turf war. Ideally, you don't want any players to get Ultra Signals, but once a single Ultra Signal is lost, it is IMPERATIVE that you don't let the same attacker get the second one. (Again, ideally, you don't want to give up the second one at all, but if you have to, make sure it's to the other team!) If each attacker only has 1, it prevents a sprinkler from spawning in the center, which gives you a solid area to hold your ground. Not only that, but these two sprinklers can work against each other. As long as you hold more turf than the highest-turfing attacker, you still win! That's pretty crucial in deciding which team to push back against in the final few seconds. In both Tri-color and Salmon Run, I really love how there are mechanics that allow you to leverage enemies' own power against each other. It's subtle, and makes me feel clever. :D

I love tri color but my least favorite thing about it is working together with the other team when attacking. It is deeply unsatisfying just sitting their so the other team can get the signal just so you get more clout for winning. You have to choose between winning and having fun fighting both teams, not just one. Make griefing the other attacking team worth it.

I think the way tricolor works rn needs some brainstorming. Playing around the Ultra signal sucks imo, being made to either zerg it nonstop or (fruitlessly) defend it really takes away from what could have been a really entertaining simple 3v3v3 turf war mode. Personally I wish the signal could be recaptured by any team but would have a function other than sprinklers, maybe opening up alternate routes from spawn? Or having a wave breaker effect go off in certain areas? Send Squeegees from the Singleplayer mode to target enemy team ink in certain areas? Theres a lot that could be done and im just not as sold on it in its current state as I would've hoped to be by now.

Fun mode but having the option to be either attack or defense didn't work. It just caused a lot of mirror matches against your own team mates. I personally preferred it back to the way it was. Which ever team is winning by half time, they defend and the other 2 teams attacks. It makes more sense and allow you to easily avoid the mirror matching.

The problem with tricolor is that the 2 small teams already have the ultra signal to balance it but if they work together then it’s just a 4v4 where one team has a big advantage and they can move in from the outside. It feels like both small teams winning if one wins should be removed so only one of the 3 teams can win no matter what but it was a lot worse when the attacking teams and defending teams where set and couldn’t be changed

I defended in every Tricolor until this one, and being able to swap back and forth so I could experiment with both attacking and defending has made this the most fun of all the splatfests so far. Also, it made matchmaking better since when you select Tricolor you'd actually play a Tricolor battle. I also agree that having a casual mode with an objective would make Splatoon more diverse, and having tricolors as a 3v3v3 would be really unique and interesting

4:00 it's actually explained in the game, it's just very well hidden as it's only explained in the splatfest guide (accesible by pressing - when you're on the screen to choose your splatfest team). I guess i must be the only person who has read it which is understandable as it's very long, but they do say that each time you try to secure the signal reduce the time to secure it (and thanks to that i know this strategy since the very first splatfest )

2 things. 1. With ultra signal creating a boost in points for capture for your team there is an incentive to capture both, thus causing a rift between attacking teams. As even though you could win, you could be winning more for your team. 2. With that in mind, the ultra signal's purpose is to grant turf control as an advantage to win for the attackers (But not a guaranteed one!!) as well as granting points for a bigger picture. This creates a problem when playing a 'mirror' battle or a casual battle not counting for any greater purpose than a simple one: The incentive to take the ultra signal, and risk taking multiple deaths yields less reward, thus causing no real need to capture as per the reasoning stated in 1. Without this feature for a casual setting that wouldn't quite create a true 3-team experience rather than just 2+2 vs 4 but with teamkill on for one team.

3:58 This is stated in the Tricolour Battle Basics manual when you press - for Splatfest Info at the voting booth. Will have to see next Splatfest if it's also there when you press - for Rules in the lobby menu, but it probably is. I'm not sure how else they could communicate it unless they wanted to add an indicator to the UI in-game showing how much time the next/current attempt lasts.

I think what tricolor could do is increase the length of time it takes to capture an ultra signal, but add in individual items that randomly spawn across the map in select location that reduces the hold time for that specific attacking team. It would notify everyone that it spawned and show up on the map. This would give defenders a reason to do something different from holding the opponents' bases/mid, as well as adding more dynamic gameplay with a main objective on top of "side quests." Also, they should add a new feature, either for tricolor or a possible new turf mode. A blitz mode, where everyone has massive buffs of ink saver sub, swim speed, intensify action, as well as super high passive special charge and like 1 second respawn (and by massive, I mean over double. A lot). This could be a special gamemode for splatfests or something like random rotations for grizzco, where it just appears for a short time and comes back later.

Personally, I find a nice strategy for defending being alternating and kill one player on each attacking team. So, you focus on one side to kill one player, then you ignore the other player and go fight the other side to kill one more player. The idea is, making it really difficult for either of the attacking side to be able to push in with 2 person. Pushing the ultra signal with only 1 person is pretty hard, since they kinda need to be able to 1 v 3, even if they get the flanking advantage it’s still pretty hard. So I find focusing on alternating between the sides, and kill one person from each side one by one works.

Honestly, one of the main things that fascinates me about Tricolor is that it's Splatoon's first crack at an honest-to-goodness asymmetrical mode. Many other shooters have had them, so really in a way I'm more surprised it took them this long. And honestly it'd be interesting to see more asymmetric modes for the game, perhaps even just variations on the already existing modes (which there is already precedent for in certain Octo Expansion stations)

I LOVE THE MODE, way better and more fun than normal turf! I only have one critisism.... The 1.5 bonus that the 2nd and 3rd teams get when attacking should only happen when the leading team is defending (and also getting the bonus). For example, if team spicy was defending and sweet and sour attacked, only sour would get a bonus while sweet and spicy wouldn't. This would make sour get more clout than sweet when winning. This could be a reason for team sweet wanting to get the ultrasignal for themselves instead of the other two teams. So my point is that the 1.5 bonus should only be applied when the leading team is defending and the other 2 attacking.

You can tell that the devs originally wanted it to be a balancing mode. They wanted the halftime winning team to have a more difficult time maintaining the lead, and that's why they made it so the winning team couldn't even CHOOSE to play Tricolor - it was just random (that was so annoying, too - RIP Team Scissors. I still remember my first Tricolor standing under the signal like "wtf am I supposed to do why isn't it reacting"). They then changed it to where NOBODY could choose it, and then made it super rare (essentially nullifying it as a mode at all). I think this update is the best approach - everyone can play and they can play both as attack and defense, so long as they win. What I'm sure the devs did NOT predict (because how could they?) was the overwhelming participation in Team Sweet. This made mirror matches extremely common for them, and lowered the amount of clout they'd get as a result, letting teams like Spicy and Sour into more clout matches so that they could actually stand a chance of earning more than Sweet. That has, as a result, made the mode more "This balances the fest when one team has an overwhelming amount of people on it." BUT I am unsure how this will function effectively moving forward when team amounts are more balanced. The 1.5 clout thing is still a factor, but who knows if that will be enough. I feel like this mode was launched with the devs feeling confident in its structure and implementation, and have had to eat crow and fix it multiple times since launch. I don't think Tricolor in its current state is at all what the devs intended, but I DO think this is the best implementation yet. I LOVE that we can choose to play this mode whenever we want, but that's clearly not how it was supposed to be at first. I do wonder if they'll adjust it more in the future though. EDIT: Also, letting anyone play the mode has essentially stopped the "THROW THE GAMES IN THE FIRST HALF" habit that players would do to try to avoid being stuck as defenders.

Even though tri-color would be a great addition to Turf War Rotations, I still think that this and the elimination of Clam Blitz and the addition of a dedicated Deathmatch mode where its just 5 minutes to rack up the most kills would make Splatoon 3 perfect. If we were to hit that, the best thing they could do at that point is take away mode rotations and give us the option to pick & choose the modes we wanna play and just rotate the stages every 2 hours instead of both stage & mode. Perfect shooter right there.

The big thing I like about Tricolor, and the thing that I think makes it better than if they did a simple 3v3v3, is the fact that it's an asymmetric mode, something that Splatoon doesn't really have. Also being "turf war with an objective" is cool - makes it frankly more enjoyable than normal Turf War, and I think the game could be improved if we took this idea and added an objective element to normal turf war. But in either case, it's certainly a very intersting mode, so I think that alone justifies it over 3v3v3. Also, I want to see Brinewater Springs Tricolor. It will truly embody the game's theme of chaos.

Mainly just because it gives something a tiny bit more special to splatfest, I just wish they'd happen more often since the bimonthly schedule kinda sucks, especially if we're giving it up for Big Run of all things. However, splatfests will end eventually. When that happens, I'd like to have tricolor as a normal mode because just not being able to do tricolor anymore until the next game *if we're lucky* would seriously suck. I believe the same should've happened with Shifty Stations in Splatoon 2, as someone who was never there to play them.

One of the best things about Halo is the insane amount of casual modes it has besides ranked like Infection, Gun Game, and Free for All. Wished we had Shifty Stations back and that Tri Color were a regular mode, and if had a Quad Color mode of 2v2v2v2 too. So many possibilities in this game for new modes like an all zipcaster mode, but the only mode without a rank where casuals can play in is Turf War which is in a pretty bad state with the map layouts and terrible matchmaking. Heck an all Squid Party mode should had been in this game by now, where people can goof around and try out parkour and stuff.

So finally being able to actually play TriColour back-to-back has heightened my opinion on it. As far as the special modes go throughout the series, I'd honestly still kinda say I preferred Shifty Stations even if ultimately, it was just Turf War with wacky stages, but that's why I kinda liked it. It's the main reason why I like Big Run more than TriColour actually, because I enjoy the novelty of Salmon Run being played on regular Turf War maps.

the 3v3v3 concept of tri-color is a more proper version of tri-color, and I do think it would work better and stand out as a tri-color match. the 2v2v4 version of tri-color feels more like a unique rank mode locked behind Splatfeast, especially because of the ultra signals existance If order had won the previous Splatfeast, I think tri-color in splatoon 3 would of been a 3v3v3, because the 2v2v4 tri-color is very chaotic
