Today's video features one of my favorite pre bonsai. I've grown this one from a seedling. You'll see me dig it and give it its first round of root work. I also perform a few root grafts and attach it to a board to improve the nebari in the future. Please subscribe if you enjoy the content and comment if you have any questions or anything you'd like to see in the future.

Thank you! There is a fall update on this tree, but I'll be doing spring work soon. These grow beds work very well! I have expanded and will be adding more this spring.

Another amazing video. I'm not sure I'll ever get to your level of O.C.TREE, but it's nice to see what a master would do when given the time.
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 4 года назад
I'm by no means a master, I'm just applying the techniques I've learned so far. It isn't too late to start on your own either. This tree is only three years from a seedling. Good soil, good temperatures, and good practices can make the beginnings of a nice tree pretty quickly.

Just recently found this channel and I think the videos are very nice and informative. However, I need to turn up the sound very much on the videos I watched so far.. Could you consider edit the sound channel or even add new voice over - it is a friendly advice but maybe it is impossible?.. I do not make or edit videoclip myself so have idea what is possible. Take care.

I don't think I can edit the sound without taking the video down but if you listen to my more recent videos I have adjusted the audio upwards.

is there any problem with tridens maples to heavy pruning?? they emit buds easily from the trunk? Thank you!!! :) Cause i want to have some buds to create a new trunk with more movement, and just cut the whole straight section . Thank You!!! nice channel!
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 4 года назад
Thank you for the kind words! On an older tree, I might be a little careful cutting to an area without buds, but on trees this young it usually isn't a problem. In fact, the first tree I featured in this video has small buds all over the lower trunk now that are swelling, and they appeared after I made the cuts to it. I will probably do a little follow up on it soon just to show you.

I found this video very interesting but i thought the root pruning was too severe and could not see the need for the root graft.It will take a while for this tree to recover after this pruning and i for one could not seed the need for this in the first place.
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 4 года назад
Thank you for the feedback, but I have to disagree with you on both counts. Nebari can always be improved, and this tree has not skipped a beat. In my most recent video I actually trimmed the tree a tiny bit to try to force a dominant leader. Here's a screenshot of the growth it had put on so far. Tridents are extremely hardy trees. ibb.co/mFBHBY5

good job,is it not necessary remove the bark of the new roots?
@smalltrees

What do you mean? Cutting to a node or removing bark to a node will serve the same purpose. So you can, but you don't have to.

@@smalltrees i was max volume on mobile, are u mic'd up or just using camera mic ?
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 4 года назад
Ah, on desktop it is a lot louder. I'm not sure how I balance that. I have a zoom h4n that I record background noise with but I've been using the mic from my hyper x cloud 2 headset for voiceovers because the zoom picks up things going on in the background and makes it hard to get good voiceovers (dogs, TV in another room, etc).

Can you not just cut the roots from the seedling and stick them straight to the tree?
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 2 года назад
No, the roots will die if you do that. They need to be supplied with nutrients by the seedling until the cambium layers of of two trees can fuse and then nutrients can flow from the big tree into the roots.
@japreet_kah
@japreet_kah 2 года назад
@@smalltrees omg thanks so much for fast reply. Basically I dug up my 8 year old oak tree and I cut most the roots off by accident, should I do this with oak seedlings?
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 2 года назад
@@japreet_kah what zone do you live in? Is the tree already dormant? Most of the time, you want to do this right at springtime so that the area around the hole you drill through the trunk doesn't dry out or die. Your best bet is to keep the tree out of wind and direct sunlight if it still has leaves, and either way I'd keep the soil moist until the tree is dormant or until you start having freezing weather. Then decrease watering to whenever the soil is dry (dormant trees don't need much water at all). If you want to try this, do it in the spring but go ahead and be on the lookout for some seedlings to use.
@japreet_kah
@japreet_kah 2 года назад
@@smalltrees I'm from England, the tree has no leaves and is dormant. It's an oak tree. I have brought it indoors now and potted it. I was going to try this root thing tomorrow but since u said I'll do when it first buds. That's if it does bud at all because it does not have many roots
@smalltrees
@smalltrees 2 года назад
All you can do is wait and hope. If you have a heating pad, putting it under the pot may stimulate root growth, but that's usually something you do when the tree is close to waking up as well.

I read the other comment before it disappeared. Not sure if you deleted it or if I fat-fingered it. I don't have any large shears so I just used what I had handy. I agree it would have been much easier to use a large set of shears and then clean up the cut. I'll see about picking some up for the future.
