The cathedral of San Giusto, in Trieste, owes its current appearance to the unification of the two pre-existing churches of Santa Maria and the one dedicated to the martyr San Giusto, which were incorporated under the same roof by the bishop Rodolfo Pedrazzani da Robecco between the years 1302 and 1320 to provide the city with an imposing cathedral. The austere facade of the church is enriched by an enormous karst stone rose window, elaborated on site by master stonemasons hired in Soncino, near Cremona, where the bishop came from. Both the bell tower and the church facade are generously covered with finds from the Roman period. The entrance portal was for example obtained from an ancient funeral monument. On the facade, moreover, the busts of three bishops of Trieste from 1862, in bronze, by Béla Brestyanszky are placed on shelves obtained from Roman pedestals.
In the church the following are of particular historical-artistic interest:
- at the entrance, within an enclosure, hexagonal baptismal font (1382), in stone, equipped with a Baroque lid, in carved and polychrome sculpted wood.
- leaning against the wall of the right aisle, Statue of San Giusto (1870), in marble, by L. Ferrari
- Chapel of San Servolo, built in the first half of the 14th century and enlarged in 1421, which houses the remains of the martyr saint from Trieste. Inside you can see: on the altar, Triptych with Stories of San Servolo (1900), oil on canvas, by Carlo Wostry and on the right wall, sculptural group of the Pietà, also called Vesperbild (first half of the 14th century), in stone painted sandstone, German or South Tyrolean.
- Chapel of San Carlo Borromeo or dei Borboni, covered by a barrel ceiling and illuminated by a Romanesque trifora, houses the tombs of Carlo Maria Isidoro of Bourbon-Spain (1788 - 1855), who lived in exile in Trieste, with his wife and the children.
- The deep apse, rebuilt in 1843 by destroying the fourteenth-century one, was rebuilt in the original lines in 1932, covered with cipollino marble, is decorated in the basin by the "Coronation of the Virgin Mary and saints", a mosaic by Guido Cadorin from 1932.
- The central apse of the church of Santa Maria Assunta has a splendid mosaic, on a gold background, depicting the "Madonna with the Child Jesus between the Archangel Michael and the Archangel Gabriel, Apostles (first quarter of the 12th century), mosaic, by workers from the Veneto ravennati
- In the apse dedicated to San Giusto, "Jesus Christ blessing between San Giusto of Trieste and San Servolo" (first quarter of the 12th century), mosaic, by Venetian-Ravenna workers.
- Through a small door, you enter the chapel of San Giovanni Battista, which was the baptistery until 1861. In the centre, a baptismal font with a hexagonal basin with marble reliefs (9th century), the work of workers from Aquileia.
