It’s kinda funny since, before Toon Link was his canon name, many referred to this Link design as “Cat Eye Link” because of his feline shaped eyes.

“How is she still alive, is she a descendant?” Yes she is actually! I think it was mentioned that Tetra’s mother gave her that piece of the Triforce of Wisdom before she passed away. Currently Tetra is the last descendant of the Royal Hylian bloodline.

Welcome to the Triforce Hunt! The most hated part of Wind Waker. Many people suspect that at one point in development there were meant to be three Sage Temples Link had to investigate rather than only two, with this fetch quest being added to pad out the game as a result. Whatever the reason for its inclusion, many people loathe this part of the game especially in the original GC release. In the original GCN version of Wind Waker, all eight pieces of the Triforce of Courage needed to be collected using Triforce Charts. And you can only use the Charts after paying Tingle’s substantial translation fees. With the initial 201 Rupee fee to start the hunt and the nearly 400-Rupee additional fee for every chart translated, you were stuck paying nearly 3500 Rupees to Tingle just to finish the game. With this expensive service being required to complete the game on top of the other weird shit on Tingle Island, it’s not hard to see why this game made many people in the West hate Tingle. The HD version of Wind Waker made an effort to reduce the frustration of the Triforce Hunt, by reducing the number of pieces that needed charts to three (substantially reducing the amount of money needed to be paid to Tingle) and allowing you to immediately collect the other five pieces at the places where their charts were initially located. And there’s your breakdown on this much-loathed part of what is otherwise now a greatly appreciated Zelda game.

Interesting fact: I don’t know if you noticed, but Tetra’s pirate crew are very similar to the people in that family photo in the hallway! Apparently their ancestors may have served Zelda long ago! Literally had to do multiple takes 😂

I really like how this game establishes that "Zelda" is less so the name of every Hyrule Princess, but rather a title passed down by the royal family through the generations. Tetra is the last surviving heir of Hyrule's bloodline, making her "Princess Zelda" by default. One of the paintings in Hyrule Castle depicts a Princess Zelda from the past surrounded by a group that looks suspiciously like Tetra's pirate crew, implying that her crew has been protecting the royal family's descendants for a very long time. But the story I want to learn is how Zelda and her retainers went from a protection squad for the Triforce of Wisdom and the royal bloodline, to a group of criminals feared across the Great Sea. That's a game I'd love to play if we ever got it.

Gotta feel bad for Tetra. She was clearly working on a tan there, but then suddenly our boats like "Nah gurl you a princess now" and boom tan gone.

Now that we've heard everything about Hyrule, I think it shows how it had a major flaw after the events of OOT, mainly the legend of the Hero of Time. Despite just being a legend, when things got bad the people of Hyrule just waited for the Hero of Time to come and save them again. Even to this day, the translated Hylian text with the spirits show that their plan to revive Hyrule was still to wait for him to appear again. Because of his title people probably thought he could travel freely and would appear when they needed him, but not only could he not do that, he didn't even exist anymore after being sent back to his childhood, so the spirit of the hero was gone too. Things finally started moving again for Hyrule when this Link, someone completely unrelated, decided to set off and solve things himself when things got bad. The King of Red Lions finally decided to accept the Hero of Time was gone, and trust that this Link could be the hero they needed now that Ganon was back.

Yes, she is in love with...A moblin, those big-lipped pig things with the spears. All those months in the Forsaken Fortress must have screwed her up.

16:51 There is actually a notable mistranslation in the English version when the King of Red Lions talks to Link about the Hero of Time and the Triforce of Courage. In English, the King says: "That sacred piece is known as the Triforce of Courage. When the Hero of Time was called to embark on another journey and left the land of Hyrule, he was separated from the elements that made him a hero. It is said that at that time, the Triforce of Courage was split into eight shards and hidden throughout the land." The wording of this implies that he’s referring to the beginning of Majora’s Mask, and in turn that Wind Waker should be a sequel to it. But, this is incorrect. In the Japanese version, he says something closer to this: "It is known as the Triforce of Courage. It is said that when the Hero of Time embarked on a journey across time and left Hyrule, the Triforce piece seperated from the hero, and broke into eight shards, which scattered all around the land." So, this is ACTUALLY referring to the ending of Ocarina of Time, where Adult Zelda sends Adult Link back into the past, suggesting Wind Waker takes place in the future of the Adult Timeline, the alternate reality which OoT Link left behind forever. It’s technically a minor detail, but it did have several English-speaking fans stumped for years about how the timeline was supposed to work, so I think it’s good to be aware of it. Like, I remember the English quote being used as “proof” that all Zelda games must take place in a single, branchless timeline, because it “confirmed” that MM lead into WW - but yeah, it was just an error in the English version.

Awww ngl, finding out now that the King Hyrule was actually the King of Red Lions really kinda makes me wish Nico kept the voice the same. I really like the King of Red Lion's voice!

Just for the record, Moblins are the pig-looking guys with the spears you have to sneak past in the first Forsaken Fortress visit. And now I have to vigorously scrub my eyes with bleach and a cheese grater because my mind went to horrible places.

So to explain my comment last episode about the King of Red Lions. I worded it that way to get you to notice that the boat was unnaturally still and unable to be talked to without spoilers, showing that King Daphnes wasn't possessing the boat while he was in human form downstairs. It's an easily misseable detail. Edit: Also about paying for Tingle to decipher the Triforce Maps. In the OG Wind Waker, every Triforce shard had a corresponding map that needed to be deciphered, and you had to pay the 398 rupee fee, EVERY! DAMN! TIME! Meaning that to beat the game, you needed to pay Tingle 3,184 rupees. That's why there's so much money in this game, you needed it to progress the story. If I played the OG version instead of HD, I don't think I would have ever finished it.

Also let me just state that King Daphnes/King of Red Lions is one of my Favorite Zelda companions because of how unique he is as a concept. He’s your guide like Navi, but he’s also your transportation like Epona, but he’s also THE ANCIENT KING OF HYRULE FROM LONG AGO. The Royalty of Hyrule (aside from Zelda) were never this heavily involved with the story before this game, so it’s both an amazing twist and it helps to really give the player a personal connection to Hyrule even after it’s gone.

I mean, Nico, you _did_ figure it out. Literally one of the first things you said when you saw Tetra was "Is she Zelda?", not even an hour in. So...yeah.

The Queen of Fairies in this game is so unique. I love her dangerously childlike and yet mature balancing for a being of incredible cosmic power.

"So stay here and do nothing, and be a damsel in distress as you were meant to be." Funny that you say that regarding Princess Zelda. Spirit Tracks Zelda thought the same thing.

Also we finally got King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule! He was actually the first King of Hyrule in a Zelda game who DID something, other than dying or getting imprisoned off-screen. As a result, all future “King of Hyrule” characters after this were pretty much based on him - Including Breath of the Wild’s King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule, whose entire character feels like a bit of an homage to Daphnes here. You know, last king of a doomed Hyrule who perished in the disaster but stays around as a ghost in order to guide the hero who would one day come and make things right again while initially hiding his true identity from said hero? Yeah. And yeah, at 5:18, that person was trying to trick you The ACTUALLY missable secret is that the King of Red Lions is completely lifeless at this point, because the boat is not possessed by the king's spirit at that moment

You know Tetra is thinking two things while she is waiting underneath the Koichi Link statue: 1. She is admiring the history of ancient Hyrule and where her blood comes from. 2. If the past princess have a lot of time as well while they wait for the hero to finish their task. Ah.... if only the manga didn't end there....

Just to note, if you want to complete the figurine gallery there's an odd case of a completely random Rito villager (Named "Kogoli") who disappears from the game after a certain point coming up, so if you want to get a picture of everybody, get them sooner rather than later!

Part of what makes it hard to guess tetra is Zelda is that she is not obviously in a disguise like sheik. Sheik is covering their face so you naturally wonder what’s under there. but since tetra just looks like a normal person you aren’t really thinking about their true identity.

I love how the great fairies look in this game the queen especially. The creepy child like figure along a doll that looks like a withered fairy that makes it clear to you that she's more powerful than the other fairies makes her surprisingly scary

Tetra is the last descendant of the royal blood line. She was born around the same time as this link and the power of the triforce just made her look like her ancestors the other Zelda s original appearance.

I like how Nico asks Tetra if she knows the people in the portrait... which on closer inspection, they clearly look like ancestors of the pirates that accompany her everywhere (Niko on the right and the swirly glasses guy on the left next to her for example). Funny little detail I never noticed after playing this game multiple times until today.

So a very handy tip regarding the Ice arrows. When you freeze an enemy with them, they stay frozen for a few seconds. You can then use the skull hammer to shatter the frozen enemy, thus killing them instantly. Meanwhile the fire will one-shot any plant or insect based enemy. Neat attention to detail.

So interesting enough the premise of a Triforce piece being split into 8 shards and gathering them together to defeat Ganon was what the original Legend of Zelda, the very first game, did as the main quest that you had to do. However unlike in Wind Waker where the Triforce of Courage was split it was the Triforce of Wisdom that was split in the original Zelda. So this pretty much a call back to the very first game made except that you need a man wearing a green skin tight suit who believes he is a fairy and enslaves other people to do free labor for him.

What? Tetra is evolving! Congratulations! Tetra evolved into Princess Zelda!

So remember how someone in the comments mentioned before how much cut content there was for this game. Welp, here's our introduction to that cut content's replacement: PADDING!!

Fun Fact: The Triforce quest used to be a LOT more tedious in the GC version. Instead of only having three charts and five shards to collect, you instead had eight charts...meaning that you would have to cough up 3184 rupees just to have them all translated. If you weren't being careful with your rupees or exploring the world, you could end up grinding for money just to beat the game.

Fun fact the them that plays as the King fuses the Triforce pieces back together is the title theme for a Link to the Past. That title screen starts with the full Triforce coming together so it's a fitting reference.

You're technically right about the IN-Credible chart not being in the original game - specifically the Japanese version of the game. In that one, you basically had to rely on your own searching skills and paying attention to those clues to piece together where the shards of the Triforce were. Whatsmore, the quest was even harder in that version of the game, in that one of the charts leading to one of the shards was hidden behind a chain of - I kid you not - 5 sea charts to get (As in, a chart that led to a chart that led to a chart, etc.). Fortunately for us in the west, even the Japanese thought that was bogus, so they created the IN-Credible chart for the international version of the game, which tells you where to find the Triforce Charts, and then the Triforce Shards, as well as which ones of each you've obtained. It also gave me another reason to hate Tingle, since he had to be the one responsible for making the letter containing it a COD letter (that money-grubbing scrouge!). Furthermore, that bogus chain-chart shard was changed in the international release so that you could just immediately collect the corresponding chart. Additional changes were made in this version were made to this quest that makes the quest even easier: namely, as you observed, some the pieces are given to you outright, where in the original game the International GCN version had the corresponding charts. I can't even begin to describe how much of an improvement that is over the original.

So in regards of the HD version, they made it simpler to find some of the triforce shards. Back in the gamecube version it was a little more complicated, all of the shards were hidden behind a Triforce chart which you had to hunt down. And this was actually the simplified version of the Japanese version. It was so much worse because they had one of the triforce charts locked behind regular treasure charts that being a total chain of 5 treasure charts. Also in the Japanese version, there was no IN-Credible Chart, the Japanese always got to have it difficult.

Now that you’ve officially met King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, I want to talk about something interesting regarding his name. Namely, it’s a pun, tying into the game’s main motif of Boats and ships. In Japanese, his first name “Daphnes” is pronounced Da-FUNE-Su. “Fune” (foo-neh) is the Japanese word for boat. Meanwhile his middle name “Nohansen” takes it’s name from “Hansen”, also meaning “Sailboat”. In other words, the guy who can turn into a boat is literally named “Ship of Ships” or “Sailboat of “Boats”. As a bonus, “Hansen” can also be written with the Kanji for “Anti-War”, and the king strongly opposes Ganondorf’s aims at conquest. It’s not the last time the series made the King’s name a pun either. We had King RHOAM Bosphoramus Hyrule from BOTW, a game about Roaming and Exploring all over Hyrule Given how both King Rhoam and KoRL were both Assholes to their respective Links in the LPs, I guess KoRL’s attitude towards Apollo Link was in fact accidental Galaxy Brained foreshadowing.

So uh hahahaha in the original game *every* Triforce Shard had a chart.

The HD version significantly cuts down the whole triforce hunt by just replacing the charts with shards itself. Instead of having tingle decipher all 7 pieces, you only need to decipher 3 of them. I believe in the GC version, you need around 3185 rupee for all of the chart deciphers. The triforce hunt was even worse in the japanese version because instead of just giving you the chart leading to the triforce piece, for one of the shards, you had to get a normal chart to get a normal chest which had the triforce chart which you then decipher to get to the triforce piece. The japanese version also did not keep track of which shards you got or which island the shards are on.

Nico thinking money is useless at 1000 Rups is pretty funny in context of the game. Nico ever thought that the ghost ship is the same one in every location, it just moves based on the moon cycle..?

One of the biggest changes to the HD version of Wind Waker is how they handle the Triforce shards. In the original, all of the Triforce locations shown in the IN-credible chart were Triforce charts. Meaning that you have to give Tingle a grand total of 3,184 rupees just to decipher all 8 of those charts and be able to get the Triforce pieces. So if you don’t already that much by the time you get all of them, you have to go out of your way to farm for rupees. It was one of the main reasons why everyone hated Tingle so much. The HD version mitigates this by only having three of the Triforce charts, meaning you only have to spend 1,194 rupees instead. And the rest just give you a piece of the Triforce outright. It’s a really nice quality of life improvement and makes the Triforce shards hunt less of a grind and hassle.

The 'Do you like boats?' intro keeps evolving, and I am super excited to see where it goes next! Prediction: Komaeda is going to convince Toon Link that bagels are as awesome as boats with barely any additional effort.

Honestly I kinda wish you used the same voice for the king as the boat.

Something interesting about the queen of fairies. When she teleports away, u can see her body go limp, like a puppet whose strings were cut, perhaps Implying that wasn't the true form of the queen but a avatar of her perhaps. And with her holding a doll in the shape of the other fairies as well it could imply a lot of other things. But this is all just implications

Now that your past the Zelda/Tetra reveal I want to bring up The Windwaker Manga. Unlike previous manga adaptations which were basically a retelling of the games story, the Wind Waker manga instead parodys the game and a lot of moments in it. Some of my personal favorites are when Link encounters Ganondork in his chamber after using the Skull Hammer and Ganon starts his speech but when he turns around and sees Link holding the Skull Hammer, he shoves him out of the room and yells at him to do it right next time. (Enter with the Master sword.) Another is when the King of Red Lions reveals he's the King of Hyrule. Link doesn't recognize him until the King go's "HEY!" (Which is the sound that plays whenever you use the communication stone.) Finally the manga pokes fun at Tetra being stuffed in Hyrule after the reveal where she recalls stories of how the princess would be in distress and how the legendary hero would come to save her. After a moment she proceeds to state that the other princesses must of had a lot of times on their hands as she wobbles back and forth.

If you look carefully at the painting with Zelda in Hyrule you’ll notice all the people surrounding her look like a certain group you already met.

So Fun Fact about the Triforce, In the original game, all these locations on the map used to give Triforce charts exclusively, then you would have to pay really high prices to Tingle to get them deciphered. In the Wii U version, they changed it slightly, the easier Charts to get from the original game was kept the same, however, for the harder to find charts, they just replaced the charts with the Triforce shards. This makes getting them a lot easier, and a lot cheaper.

The IN-credible chart is actually in the original. It also served as a gate that required you to get the upgraded wallet first, as the original starting wallet maxed at 200 rupees, hence the odd price. Not only that, but that shard hunt has also been changed: notice how the map has charts and shards on it? Originally, they were ALL charts, so you had to pay for every single one first and then dredge them all up! It was hella expensive and probably the most maligned part of the game, hence the change.

AAAAAAH I ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION: King Daphnes’s theme is a slower remix of the Hyrule Castle theme from A Link To the Past! The music during the scene where the triforce of wisdom reforms and awakens Tetra into Zelda is also the Intro Music from ALttP too!

The IN-credible chart was in the original game. But the reason it cost 201 rupees is because the original first wallet in the original game could only hold 200 rupees, so they wanted to make sure you already had a bigger wallet before you started looking for the charts. The wallet upgrade was originally mandatory to beat the game. Now it's been made optional. That's just one of many ways they've streamlined the Triforce piece hunt in this version.

So, a little fun fact about the original version of the game: In the gamecube version, all 8 of the Triforce pieces required a chart to obtain. This meant that, in order to find all 8 pieces, you had to go to Tingle and have him translate all of the charts. If you wanted to get all of the charts at once, then turn them into Tingle together, you would have had to get 3,184 rupees. And that... is pretty much the only reason to get rupees in Wind Waker aside from the auction hourse.

One thing I feel like bringing up is that speedruns of this game are hilarious. See, the main strat is that you don't even need the King of Red Lions, by getting in the water and swimming back and forth immediately one frame after the other, (pause buffering helps) Link can actually build up speed while in the water, enough to completely yeet himself across the map! ...... the speedruns also avoid this dumb stupid quest with the triforce shards!

Oh yeah, when people mentioned that Dungeons were cut from this game, those scrapped dungeons were replaced with the Triforce shards quest. Aonuma said that the reason those dungeons weren’t in the HD version is because bits and pieces and concepts of those dungeons were reused in later games.

About the Triforce shards, there's yet another big QoL improvement. The original had eight charts that had to be found and deciphered, so that you could go salvage the shards. The remake made it so for most of them, you find the shards directly instead of a chart, which makes the quest much less annoying.

The underwater hyrule castle stuff as well as the boat being the king has got to be some of my favorite story moments in wind waker, really was an eye-opener on just how the world had to get by after the floods and how it used to be.

Oh right, the boat/king of red lions is the King of Hyrule. I remembered it vague, but it was a great twist when it was told in this moment and I was surprised, too. So Tetra is really Zelda (or a descendant/reincarnation of her) and the talking boat/king of red lions is the (spirit of the) father of her/the King of Hyrule. It kind of reminds me that twist from Zelda: Ocarina of Time and the secret about Shiek. Now the search of the Triforce of Courage begins and you have to find the 8 parts from that (it kind of reminds me of the anime "Inu Yasha" and the journey to collect the shards of the Sacred Jewel, but easier and in the sea). I also wonder how Tingle know the Triforce and how to decipher the Triforce maps (maybe really some fairy magic and/or connection to some people who knows about them or maybe he made the Triforce charts himself and encoded it/put a spell on it). Also now that you have the bow with the fire and ice arrows, you can sail to the island of fire that you could not enter before. ;-)

A cool detail I don't see talked about much is the stained glass windows depicting all the Sages from Ocarina of Time in the Master Sword chamber, as this is the timeline where they all sacrificed themselves to defeat Ganon before.

I love how Queen of Fairies has rather uncanny motions like if she was marionette on strings, just like the doll she has

And here is where the hd version makes the game more bearable than the original version: Unlike the hd version, all of the triforces location were charts. And every single charts need to be decipher. And because Tingle is a jerk, the total amount need to decipher them plus the IN-credible chart fee Tingle force you to pay is 3,385. This is why the rupee is important in this game. And not only that, you have to go to each of the 8 location and salvage each of the pieces up. Thankfully, in this version, only three of them are charts and the others are just the pieces of the triforce. Also, for you amiibo collection, get all the ritos pictures first before continuing the story because one of them is missable.

Anyone else think Nico should just use the same voice for both the KoRL and King Daphnes? He point out that they have the same voice and it would be a bit confusing to give different voices for the same character even if they look different. Maybe it’s just me.

Also the Queen fairy caught me off guard, considering her puppet like movements made me think she just chose that form to match the very kid like Link lol. favorite version personally since the thought of the other great fairies being her puppets is terrifying

People have mentioned about the original version of the Triforce fetch quest, but I haven't seen anybody mention why: As you know, two dungeons were cut due to time constraints and repurposed in future Zelda games. But this apparently made the game too short. So they added the Triforce fetch quest. A decent idea given the circumstances, but it wasn't implemented well, and I'm glad that's been somewhat fixed here with the basic wallet's rupee count and the reduction in the amount of charts.

You could make an innuendo joke when those triangle pieces float together in front of Tetra's unblinking face. And the fact they made her transform just made it all the better.

Platform Chart is useful, actually. Your hint is that there are single platforms, the two-paired platforms, and the triple platforms. They're not all equal in terms of treasures.

The hunt for the Triforce charts and pieces has caused many a player to rage quit this game. In the Gamecube version you couldn't get the piece without the chart, there were eight charts. Not to mention the ordeals you need to go through for some of them.

Feels like Nico here made the most unlikely love story. Pirate girl that takes charge, wants all the money, and a weeb. And the boy that is a pushover, has way too much money to know what to do with it, and is also a weeb. It’s a match made in heaven.

So, fun fact: you can tell with the IN-credible Chart that a number of the Triforce shards, you'll just find. In the original game, those places where you would find shards just flat out were instead Triforce Charts. In other words, _every_ shard was hidden behind a Triforce Chart that you'd have to get deciphered by Tingle, for a grand total of _3,184 rupees._ yeah i'll take the HD version any day

So the song that played when Tetra was revealed to be Zelda was actually the Title Screen theme for Link to the Past. You might recognize it. After that, of course, Zelda's Lullaby. Another fun connection is the whole idea of collecting 8 shards of a Triforce, that's actually what you do in the very first original Zelda game.
