Trigger Finger Isolation Drill

Here is a nice drill that has many benefits to it. I (Zee) was introduced to this drill by a friend and a professional (the creator of the original drill, mine is modified) that plays a critical role in helping to get the best out of operators at my former unit. Doc Haselhuhn has a whole scientific explanation for the particulars of the drill, which I dig and it made a believer out of me when I tried it.
The summary of the drill is this. We want to isolate our trigger finger on our pistol so that we can analyze our press and implement the best finger position to get the desired results on target, consistently. We do that by using a modified grip (just for the drill) which eliminates possible negative input into the gun via our other digits.
We have made the targets relatively small and also require you to use your support hand during the drill. These requirements serve to increase your focus and sensitivity concerning your input on the gun while trying to press the trigger without disrupting the sights. Try it out and take it slow. Audit every shot you take and get information that you need to correct any issues you may find.
Have fun and post your videos and/or results

What instructor Zee mentioned here about the transfer of habit is absolutely true. I started training myself years ago to become ambidextrous with brushing my teeth. Yes, it was super awkward at first and I had to be very conscious of everything. But man, it paid off. I have caught falling drinkware, stacks of papers, etc. as a result.

I agree with you that the majority of the time it is recoil anticipation that is causing shooters to miss. I am open to see if this drill will work to improve my groups.
@jamiesloan5902
@jamiesloan5902 4 года назад
Quality Guru That's 99% of the reason that people miss. I can dry fire my gun 1,000 times in a row, and hit center bullseye every time. But, I can't when I'm shooting "live" rounds. Hmmm. Pretty much EVERY DRILL OUT THERE is working on that "other" 1% of shooting. You know it's true...lol
@Quality_Guru
@Quality_Guru 4 года назад
@@jamiesloan5902 I took a newer shooter out with me. I had him rack the slide with a live round, and then pull the magazine out. I asked him to fire the live round and then immediately perform a dry fire while looking at the target. Afterwards reload the magazine and repeat. Both he and I were able to see him dipping the pistol during the dry fire. After some practice his shot group significantly shrank. It's a great drill to get you back on center at the range.

The shooting range in the video... Is this the Erickson Family Shooting Range? Beautiful range plus looks well cared for... Excellent video! Love having two days in a row with learning content to practice at the range tomorrow... It is going to rain here tomorrow so no one will be there which makes it a great time to go... It took me a while to get my finger placement just right when pulling the trigger. For years the shot would go slightly to the left by an inch... Broke that habit years ago but every shot i take now is a double tap for two quick rounds before moving to the next target... Hopefully the internet issue is fix before next Tuesday since many of us are dying for some Tactical Tuesday... Thanks for the video..

I tried this drill yesterday, and it was very helpful to identify what I need to work on. Agree with other commenters, wishing that this info was more widely known. It's solid gold. My weak hand shooting is so bad, I am thinking about getting an airsoft gun or something to practice with at home. PS. A good book I'd like to recommend on handgun shooting is "Automatic Pistols" and it's companion volume "Sixguns and Bullseyes" by William Reichenbach (1937), which is available on Amazon. While some of the content is dated (it's focused on 1-handed target shooting of steel frame guns), the core concepts are timeless, and reflected in TR's video series content. Reichenbach even includes a chapter on the "ideal automatic", that sounds a lot like a modern Glock... Thanks again, TR! Keep up the good work.

The trigger itself ( being a mechanical device) can literally only move straight to the rear. The best Shooters in the world regularly "snatch" "jerk" & "bash" the shit out of their triggers all the time. I believe that the possibility of your actual trigger finger steering the barrel in one direction or another is extremely slim. Especially if you have a good two-handed grip. I believe that almost 100% of misses are due to some sort of pre-ignition recoil anticipation movement. The other small percentage of misses (especially during longer strings of fire) are a misinterpretation of the sight picture and/or a timing issue. Like pressing off another shot before the sights fell back down to the intended point of aim/impact. With all that said, this drill still has value.
@zdurham1
@zdurham1 5 лет назад
parabellum 320 I agree mostly. The trigger, generally can only go straight back but the pressure put on it, because it is connected to the rest of the gun, can disrupt the sights a bit before the round goes off. But I get where your coming from. I just want the shooter to have the best possible finger placement possible so that they can develop a good habit which is one more thing that the shooter can push to the subconscious.👊
@parabellum3205

@carpeomnia2011
@carpeomnia2011 4 года назад
Not big on this one guys. Seems kinda iffy. It looks like that grip creates more issues than it intends to isolate. I bet Karl couldve hit that square each time with a standard grip. I could've and I'm not hot shit. If you cant hit that square from that range with a standard grip and taking your time then you got other issues to figure out. The one thing I have had issues with trigger control is, I'll call it rapid fire, like 1 shot every second or faster, Ill see my shots grouped nicely down and left of center. I dont see how this drill would improve that. Maybe Im wrong tho. I haven't tried it out but I'll give a shot but just from observation Im not too big on it. Thanks for the getting out of the box with it though its good to see new stuff regardless.

I love this.. It's shows how grip strength doesn't play into accuracy.. You always end up with those guys that say, grip..stance..blah blah.. They often have no idea what the fk they're talking about.. Accuracy is about proper finger control and almost nothing else.. You can be on one foot, off balance, leaning, upside down, holding the pistol with 3 fingers and still fire off an accurate round.. So many people fail to see and understand this.. They try and complicate stuff regurgitating some bullshti mantra they heard some other tactical idiot repeat. I can place my finger anywhere on the trigger pad and still get an accurate shot off. Trigger control is about the discipline in how well you move that trigger during the press. Some people can get away with being more or less precise. Grip strength and stance is used for fast, follow up shots where you absolutely need to mitigate the recoil by using everything possible. Stance, grip, lean, body position.. I'm a 160lbs but shoot USPSA M class. It's almost laughable when you see all these 'mil-type' guys come up and shoot like garbage. Sure they're soldiers/marines and can fight like mofos. But have them demonstrate shooting ability and it's often a joke. Shooting a gun is shooting a gun. It's not rocket science but there are mechanics behind the methodology and the proper application of technique makes all the difference.

All these mini drills are great and all, but.... The #1 reason that people miss is because of shot anticipation. They do one of two things... They will push forward, and down on the gun, to keep the muzzle from jumping. Or, they will squeeze the gun tighter, as they pull the trigger, to compensate for the recoil(this is the main reason that I hate the term "squeeze" the trigger). To put it in simple terms... If you can dry fire your gun, without changing your sight picture, then you should be able to shoot live rounds, just the same. If you can't do that... Then, YOU ARE FLINCHING!! Period.
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 4 года назад
Jamie, I agree. However, there are shooters that break the gun left or right even while dry firing. That is due to incorrect placement of the finger on the trigger and failure to isolate the movement of just the trigger finger while keeping the rest of the hand still. This drill helps correct that.
