Dive in La Caleta Dominican Republic at 108meters with Trimix. Golden Arrow Dive Center.
For those who want to try to replicate the shearwater see here: portugnole.blogspot.com/2016/...
The deco shown on this video is VPM-B +3, with the current state of knowledge about deep stops, I would absolutely NOT recommend anybody to use VPM as a safe deco algorithm for this kind of dive. I dive now GF 50/70.
Good diving.

Amazing but not much to see at that depth by the looks of it at that location. Many sponges etc around 53m mark. At 105m looked like lots of silt and dead coral fragments? Maybe up close (can't tel from vid) there was lots of cool inverts? What was your total bottom time approx?

13/38 @ 100m+ Fortunate it was an eventless dive. Even by 90's standards and in warm water that's pushing your luck pretty hard I'd say. Cool to see the nice diving conditions you have, pretty dark from 30m and below here in the nordics, and rarely more than 15m visibility.

can you explain ? (i don't know anything about diving)
@Chancey001
@Chancey001 4 года назад
@@dvorak2676 I'd be happy to. I'll start with the very basic things and then move into the more overlooked things. Let's start with gas mixes. For both travel and back gas he has an END ( equivalent narcotic depth) above 40m. That's ridiculously high. Some agencies require that the gas END is not over 30m. It has to do with how dense the gas is, ie how much effort you have to put into breathing it at depth and how much nitrogen narcosis you have, it's like being drunk, a very bad idea at 100+ meters. He then uses a 48% nitrox mix and I'm not sure why he didn't reject the mix and get a 50%mix, but then be used 80% oxygen and there is never an excuse for that. There's been many reasons to not use 80% so I won't go into that here. Also he violated the MOD (maximum operating depth) of the gas. As for his decompression model, the argument for using vpm is stupid, however that's just my opinion. I personally think it's pseudo science steeped in fiction. A bubble check at 60m? That's very unsafe. Should have been performed at the surface not with a deco ceiling over your head. However if it was performed in both locations I have to give him props. No use of a secondary buoyancy compensation device, ie drysuit or secondary wing bladder. I also think the amount of gas he carried is only enough for him and not his buddy as well. And just what I can instantly remember from watching it once. I'm sure I would find more if I looked harder, however I'm not here to take away from his rather amazing experience. I just don't want him to get killed or worse kill someone else. There's a safe way to do these things and a not safe way. This unfortunately is the latter.

@@Chancey001 I'm a returning sport SCUBA diver and in the process of a refresher PADI open water course. I was amazed at your comprehensive response. I have always researched everything to death and have no desire at this point of my life, dive the barren depth shown in this video. The life I'm interested in is more in the 50 foot to maybe 80 foot range. I have to admit I was enjoying what I previously believed was a safely executed deep water dive. I never want to see anyone get hurt and I hope the divers watching this and the divers in the video, double check their dive plan. I thought diverstoday have dive computers that help to keep drivers safe. Why wouldn't their dive computer coach them through this dive as you described? Just wondering.
@Chancey001
@Chancey001 4 года назад
@@roadkingjp First things first, congratulations on returning on the sport of diving! I'm glad you decided to return back, when did you get certified first? Dives in the 50 - 80ft range require attention to detail and should be planned accordingly. However with dive computers today you can simply grab any ol' 80 with either nitrox32 or air and go for a safe dive with relatively little planning. However when the dives get extremely deep like here at 109m (~360ft) things like gas planning become extremely important. Computers today will do all the work of telling you when to ascend based on the data given. The deepest dives can be done using a bottom timer and depth gauge, I still carry one for backup purposes. A computer won't tell you to not exceed 1.4 po2 bottom mix or that your mix needs more helium because you're breathing concrete and have the mental capacity as if you had 6 martini's. The biggest part of technical diving is the predive plan. The dive does require some skill, but the real skill comes in the planning and execution of that plan and having the capacity at that depth to help your teammate.

@@christophengovanduc2729 I'm confused. William Ferry was thinking the same thing as me: you list your gas switches as the beginning, and I was wondering how you made the gas switch question at 61 metres? At 4:42, you indicate that you're switching gases, but I don't see you changing anything. But then at 9:40, you appear to switch mouthpieces, and neither of them has the double hose I'd expect to see on a rebreather. As Wm suggests, if you're on a rebreather, it would adjust the gas mix as you change depth, would it not? And in the video, you appear to be diving a rebreather, but in your reply above, you say this was taken during OC training? Sorry for the noob questions. Beautiful video.

@@cheaplaffsarefree : So: yes I am on OC. So at 61m, I switch from travel gas which sits on my left side as a stage, to back gas (the doubles that sits on my back). I have removed the travel gas regulator from the stage from my mouth, and just took the long hose regulator that sits under my chin. There is (I think) no room for errors because the only 2 regulators around my neck are the back mounted doubles (but see haxx0r message, it seems even with stupid/clear gas changes, there is something safer ... :) ). While descending along the wall to 80m, I was tucking back the travel gas regulator. I didn't had to look too much, because I know where the things are on this setup, and I am able to do that without looking. Hope it helps and yes now on rebreather no need for gas changes.

Is a 13/38 mix for 108m a good choise? I mean if you calculate the PPn2 10.8 * 49%n2 = 5,2 BAR of n2? shouldnt you feel the narcosis?

Training dive explanes everything. Interestingly, you can tell your stress levels rose slightly as you went deeper by the way you hold and use the camera which is totally understandable especially at 100m. Great video and wonderful music. Dive safe ;-)

So when using a rebreather you don't do a safety stops ?
@christophengovanduc2729
@christophengovanduc2729 3 года назад
You still have to do deco, a rebreather will not prevent that. The rebreather will just maintain the best mix for the depth you are at, so theoretically you will do less deco than an open circuit diver doing the same profile.

If you are on a rebreather then you don’t need travel gas. You can go direct with your bottom gas and the rebreather will add the needed O2 for the gas to be safe close to the surface.

only 1 80cu and 2 40 for bailout ?
@riskototh
@riskototh 6 лет назад
Why not? The deco schedule on CCR is far more optimal, than on OC. So in case of emergency from the deepest point, you need to do less deco, that the OC diver. I have simulated it with current scenario: CC down, 10 minutes bottom time at 108m. Then bailout with Tx12/60, switch to Nx48 at 21m, switch to Nx80 at 10m. Ascent rate 5m/min, total bailout deco time 25 minutes (total run time 46.5 minutes). Bailout gas consumption Tx12/60 1155 litres, Nx48 250 litres, Nx80 507 litres, RMV 17lpm. That corresponds to cca 100 bar from Tx in S80, 45 bar from Nx48 in S40 and 100 bar from Nx80 in S40. So far so good, no? Still 100% reserve. Edit: the diluent i used was Tx10/70

If you're gonna spend money, why use trimix? Why not just go for the jugular and go straight heliox? There's literally no benefit to trimix that heliox doesn't handle for the cost.
@christophengovanduc2729
@christophengovanduc2729 4 года назад
and that statement is validated by?? from what I can remember Heliox as a high tendency to HPNS below 100m and as it diffuses more rapidly in the body than nitrogen, you might need longer decompression at shallow depth. This is deco diving not saturation diving.

I have 3 comments: 1. This must have been a training dive, otherwise what was the point of diving to this depth because there was nothing interesting to see. 2. I wouldn't like diving with your buddy. He rarely checked on you during the dive. You could have had a serious problem & he was a little too far away to help. 3. Good practice on technical dives is for your buddy to check the gas you are switching to before you switch. This did not happen. You didn't show the deco switches, but I'll bet he didn't confirm those either. Complacency leads to mistakes.
