Thank you! I had a leaf dying with a new one starting on same stem, so I cut it off as you at the main stem. I wasn't sure what to do, so glad I found you!

That was a great demonstration! I'm in Tucson so I'm thinking it's too dry for them outside. Maybe for a month or so during monsoon? But that's a short period of time to risk the wind, the heat, and the pests! Indoors, I run humidifiers for my tropicals.

You can try, we get dry here in South Florida. We get 50 percent humidity but we can go a good 3 weeks no rain and dry. I have to run the sprinklers 2x as much. Give it a try. Most like water but not sitting in water.

Mine are indoor...... at the base of the dead leaf it looks as if a new leaf is getting ready to sprout, do I still cut BELOW this? i’ve been waiting for the new leaf to form (that’s attached to the dead leafs stem)

This was really helpful, thanks! I just cut off the oldest leaf on my guy, but not before pulling off some of the husk at the base -- leftover dry bits from the last trims. But I was surprised: what are those triangular growths under the husk? They look like leaves from another plant, just getting ready to burst?

Hi! Great Video. In the last part you talk about a small plant that has grown too tall. I have one with a 4ft tall curly stem. Can I cut some of the stem off or do I have to cut down just the leafy part? Thanks a lot!!!

Thanks for the informative video! I have one Alocasia, in a pot, indoors (I am in Massachusetts). It has two "trunks" in the pot. One is about 4-5 inches above the rim of the pot, with three leaves, and the big one is about 5 FEET above the rim of the pot with three leaves. I am not a fan of the HUGE tall trunk, and wonder if it would be OK to cut it all back to maybe 2-3 inches above the soil - right thrrough the trunk. Would it regrow from the cut trunk? It's just so "leggy" looking as it is now. I hope to hear from you, as I have not been able to find any information about cutting through the entire trunk, but rather about pruning the dead leaves. THANK YOU!
@aidensiessmayer5615
@aidensiessmayer5615 2 года назад
Hi! You can cut the trunk off. They will regrow but the first leaves coming back will be a little bit small. You can also cut up the trunk, pot up the pieces, and they will regrow too. Think of it kind of like a philodendron, just with the nodes very close together.

@@aidensiessmayer5615 Hi Aiden. I have a one with three stems, but the problem is that a year ago, they suffered from root rot, and it eventually spread up to the trunk, causing a large part of the trunk to shrivel up and get hollow. Somehow, this amazing plant was tenacious enough to survive after I stop watering it and now it is producing huge leave, but the normally 4-6 inch diameter trunk is 90% hollow. My questions are: A) Where should I cut the trunk? near the bottom of the base where it is in the soil, and B) do I see to put the part in water or just replant directly in soil and water lightly? Thanks in advance!
@aidensiessmayer5615
@aidensiessmayer5615 2 года назад
@@georgespapavasiliou3746 cut the trunk off above the rotted, dead part. and you can plant the other part in soil, and water slightly.

you can cut the trunk but no need to and then they will grow off the side once really mature. they will not put a new leaf out of the center of a cut trunk. You can right they can be cut up and will sprout new pups.

I cut my alocasia odora straight across where the bark is. I took it outside in the spring. Not sure if the leaves got scorched or it got too cold. Lost all the leaves. It started getting leaves again but they were tiny. So I kept just one on it hoping it would get a big one. Today I removed one and left one. Thought if I trimmed some of the bark it might help. Wrong the leaf fell off. So, I went down on the bark a little ways and cut it straight across. It has a healthy pup. Will it sprout out of the top again. Help

@BigLeafTropicals
@BigLeafTropicals 3 года назад
Are you refering to heliconia? If so usually from the rhizome you will have new growth close to the dead stalk. So yes I would cut the dead one and leave the little ones starting.

Thank you for the video! Do the leaves ever grow back? I only have one plant with three leaves, if I cut a dead one off will I be left with just two leaves forever or will the cut one eventually grow back?
@BigLeafTropicals
@BigLeafTropicals 3 года назад
Yes, the leaves all grow from the center. So you could cut off the one leaf no problem. New ones will grow from the center over and over and in time will grow out from the base of the plant as well.
