I have 3 hibiscus plants, all 3 have spider mites and 2 have mealy bugs. I have tried alcohol and water, dish soap and neem oil and cannot get rid of them. Any advice?
Is that a hibiscus tree or shrub ? Also how much on the systemic treatment do you use? Is the systemic something I should use when I place it outside ?
Hi, I live in Zone 2b/3 (depending on which model used) and have had a hibiscus for many, many years. It has blown off the deck in a windstorm multiple times. It has had aphids and major leaf drop once but still keeps trucking along. I have done minor pruning (trimming broken branches with loppers) in the Springtime and put her outside. She usually blooms around Christmas/New Year's for me. But this year she is quite late...like now the first week of May, when I am about to put her outside. My guess is that it was a little too cold for her over winter by the windows. It is still hovering around the freezing point overnights, so I am waiting to get her used to outside temps. I guess my question is will I risk a non-bloom year if I prune and put her outside while in bloom? Thanks
Jacks classic is a powder that you add to the water that you give to your plants During the winter you should only feed once every 2 weeks, for a simpler application you could use classiccote from jacks fertilizer or osmocote they are slow release 3-4 month feed
Weather suddenly dropped to 20 and my hibiscus was outside It looks like a glossy leaves I don’t know if it’s dead or not But even all the plants that I covered up including hibiscuses , impatient plant & lilies are dead but hibiscus is not down but leaves don’t look healthy I don’t know what to do with it
Please help I have Kept this hibiscus alive for years and was out of town when it froze one night this is when I got home too I need to know what to cut how far and anything else I need to do before I bring it in the house please help
My plant also like that stage. Leaves are soggy. But I trimmed leaves and branches. I want to know is the plant will come back. Please need help and how to take care.
Wendy, the Texas freeze last winter got three of my outside Hibiscus plants. I cut them about 2 - 3 inches above the ground. Two did not recover, but the one that did came back fuller and taller than it was before the freeze with lots of flowers. Hope this helps.
have a Hibiscus that has lost all leaves should or could I cut it back I think it might be dead sad was thinking if I cut it back how far can I cut it back
To tell if your plant is still alive, cut a small portion of each branch off and see what color the center core of that cut piece is. If it is a greenish color, then that plant is still alive. If it is brown or darker, then that branch is dead. If all the cut off portion of each branch is brown or darker, then the plant is dead. If only some are brown or darker, cut the remaining part(s) of that branch off. There's several reasons why a Hibiscus plant loses all their leaves. 1) Watering too much. 2) Watering too little. 3) Poor drainage. Are the main reasons. In general, Hibiscus needs to be watered at least once a day when the days are hot and dry. Because of the need of watering quite frequently, a good drainage soil is best to be used. If the soil has poor drainage, it's bad for the Hibiscus to grow in completely drenched soil. Damp soil is ideal. I don't know what zone area you live in, but go to your nearest gardening supply store and ask them what's the best fertilizer they have that is best for Hibiscus, since Hibiscus do require frequent fertilization.
aaaaaaaahhh the way you just cut such long parts I just cant do it xD Even if i try my best i can only cut 10cm at best.. If only I was there to take all cuttings to plant in some pot.. Thanks for tips
Exactly. I'd do that too. Propagate what I cut off, plant in pots to form roots and have more for outside later. . Rinse off the cuttings and cut off leaves and spider mites would be gone.
So do I! I have this double hibicus that has only one branch and became so tall! I wanted to prune (long cut) so it can have more branches but I am afraid since my granda gave it to me. 😭
@@starrywalks don't be afraid , cut the tall part , you can probably make at least 2 cuttings , then I dip mine in root one and plant in soil .. I will have two more plants...
I don't get how cutting a branch makes it grow 2 or more branches from that cut branch. Where exactly do we cut it near a leaf or something? Still unclear to me.
Look at each branch carefully and see if there looks to be small leaf growth starting to grow from the branch. Cut about an inch right above it. If there's several on one branch, then cut an inch above the one closest to the tip of the branch. What is going to happen after you do cut, those small leaf growth(s) will then start to grow into branches. If you don't, those small leaf growth(s) won't produce into new branches. And new branches is what you want, since blooms only take place at the tips of the branches. Don't worry, you won't kill the plant, but you will see a more fuller plant.
The growth hormones of a hibiscus are sent to the tips. When you prune back to just above where new nodes are trying to grow, they will. And your hibiscus will be much thicker and have more blooms. :)
Jonathan King thanks, Jonathan. So just to be clear...cut one inch above the green leaf. In other words, cut off that little green leafed bud? Seems counterintuitive to cut that bad boy off right when it’s trying to grow right in front of us. 😬 If I heard right?
Sylvia, don’t cut off the green leaf bud or node. Cut above that, or more towards the tip of the branch. Not below it. Then that node will receive the growth hormones and grow.
