About 70 km north-east of Moscow, the Trinity-Saint Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad is an exceptional example of a complete Orthodox monastic complex in activity, with a military function characteristic of its period of development from the 15th to the 18th century. The main Lavra church, the Assumption Cathedral, which is reminiscent of the cathedral of the same name in the Kremlin, contains the tomb of Boris Godunov. Among the treasures of the Lavra is the famous icon of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev.
The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Russian: Тро́ице-Се́ргиева Ла́вра) is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks.
