The Trinity St Sergius Lavra Monastery is the largest monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church, with a history that dates back for hundreds of years. There are about 1000 monasteries in Russia.
The monastery is located in the town of Sergiev Posad, which is around 70 kilometers to the north-east of Moscow. Sergiev Posad is the only town of the Golden Ring located near Moscow.
The monastery comprises over fifty different buildings, located within ancient defensive walls. The architectural complex of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
