British Airways Trip Report flying from Vienna to London onboard one of the British Airways A320Neo, in business class (Club Europe), on a lovely sunny winter afternoon.
A comfortable flight on the British Airways Business Class from Vienna to London on the Airbus A320Neo. In business class, the middle seat is permanently blocked, but today nobody seat on the aisle seat, which gave us even more comfort for this 2 hours flight.
This was my first time flying in the British Airways Club Europe class and I must say I have opposed feelings about it. While the comfort at service from the crew was amazing, the catering for this 2h+ flight was disappointing. I'm not saying that what we were offered wasn't good, but you expect a lot more on a flight of this length, especially in business class... at least a warm meal, which was not the case.
We arrived at the airport 3h early to fully enjoy the British Airways Business Class experience, which of course starts in the business class lounge. We used the new Vienna Terminal 1 business lounge, located airside but before the passport control. It's huge, with warm meal options, plenty of drink options, and lots of comfortable seating spots.
We boarded 40 minutes ahead of the scheduled time of departure. Pushback was on time. We then taxied towards the deicing area of Vienna airport. In the video, I give you some details about deicing and why it's so critical in aviation. We had just a very thin coat of ice over the wings, but that's enough for deicing. Nothing is left to luck in aviation.
We took off from rwy 16 in Vienna and quickly made a right turn to start our route towards London-Heathrow Terminal 5. We flew to the south of Vienna, enjoying some nice views of the city, heading towards the Alps. We flew for a brief time over them, before turning right and heading towards Germany. We overflew the city of Cologne just before entering Belgium, the English Channel, and, finally, the UK and London.
The approach to Heathrow rwy 27R was all over London. The views of the city were some of the best I've had of it. We saw the downtown, the London Eye, Big Ben... The lack of clouds and the perfect afternoon light made this approach a breathtaking one!

The bread and jam is a scone... One of the most famous British cuisine elements. They've basically given you Afternoon Tea. If you were flying at the correct time of day... between 3 and 5pm then the afternoon tea being cold is perfectly normal. Us British people eat afternoon tea cold usually although you could add hot elements (but then it would not be traditional). I really love your channel by the way!

What did you expect to eat at 3 in the afternoon on a 1hr40 flight? That was a decent afternoon tea, nice sandwiches and scone and Jam, with snacks, coffee and a full bar ... I really don't know what you think could have been better? It looked like a great service to me, and certainly on a par with other European business class products

I used to fly every other week with BA in Club Europe. To me, it was worth every penny. On flight 3+ hours, you get a proper meal and of course, Champagne. But with that middle seat blocked out with the little table, it's a godsend. It was the difference between arriving on my knees in economy to being revived in business class. Also, the lounges make a major difference, especially the showers and meals. I had breakfast, lunch and dinner one time as I was at Heathrow for hours. So no, for me, BA Club Europe is pretty great.

Finally a proper comment with a well explained opinion... thanks for that. The only thing I critizise about this flight is the meal. There just 3 quaters of sandwhich and a dessert. For a 2h flight a warm meal is the absolute minimum in business.

@OnBoardHD well many thanks! 😊 I do agree actually that the meals should be standardised regardless of whether it's less than 3 hours or over 3 hours. Only issue is Air France and KLM only offer a "snack" for under 3 hour flight time. Shame really 😕 So this practice tends to be common on European business class, regardless of airline. Although I understand Turkish airlines has a totally different product for European business class, but I've not tried that... yet! 😉

Whilst of course the onboard aspect of an upgrade to Club Europe is a big part of the experience, many people forget the other aspects of the Club Europe service, such as the huge hold luggage allowance, lounge access, dedicated check-in desks in many locations, fast track services, plus almost double avios and tier points on many of the routes among other things. Sometimes it really can pay to upgrade... Perhaps theres an absolute maximum in difference i'd pay from the standard economy fare though. Perhaps £150-£200 more at the absolute most depending on my trip requirements. Good trip report btw.

I agree that for me the real advantage of so-called business class (it’s in reality more like upper economy) is priority check in, extra luggage and in some but not all airports, priority security. The actual flying experience is no big deal and I couldn’t care less about food on short haul. Business class, long haul, is altogether another world and worth every penny of the extra cost.

Brilliant and well shot video, I always like the additional information you add, Good to see that the Captain took the decision to de ice before take off even though it may not have been necessary, BA take safety as a priority. Cabin looked modern, fresh and clean, the food looked adequate but not sure if the entire business fare can be justified, but assume most people would take the opportunity to eat in the business lounge before. The views on the approach to LHR were amazing it's not until you fly over London that you realise what a huge area it covers.

The meal offered was due to the hour you departed, its afternoon tea. As much as its a British tradition and a staple of BA, i think on this particular length of flight it should be swapped. Saying that, they have done so before and been criticized. So i think they will never win.

Yes. US domestic air travel has been around for many decades. Airlines have no real surface competition in the US (except that Washington DC-New York-Boston corridor) and it's informal anyway.

Another excellent trip report. In answer to your question: No, it was not worth it flying in Business Class from what I have seen (especially on a A320Neo). Perhaps on a larger aircraft where you actually have space between the seats and perhaps the food is better. Could not believe how quiet is was at the check-in at Vienna Airport considering it was an afternoon flight. The approach to London Heathrow was interesting as it reminded me of the approach to Glasgow, Scotland. My spouse and I flew on an Air Transat A321Neo to Vancouver, Canada back in October, 2021 and was not impressed at all. The seats were very uncomfortable (like sitting on concrete) but the 4 1/2 hour flight was ok food-wise and entertainment-wise. We are flying on an A330-200 (in Club Class) to Croatia later on this year so should be interesting to see what the service is like on a smaller aircraft. Would think that on a almost 9 hour non-stop flight, a larger aircraft would be used. Keep up the excellent work!

They must not know the law of supply and demand: Lower prices usually attract more customers. I guess the airlines want to recoup the money they lost while shutdown as soon as possible even if it means over-pricing some basic and short routes.

The best value is to try and ask for the emergency row seat in economy class when checking in. If not offered ask for the seat in front or behind and then change over if the seats are vacant when the doors have been closed. If you have to eat then buy something at Pret and take it on board. European Club fares are far too high unless you need flexibility.

Well, the "best value" is subjective opinion. What is the best value for you doesn't need to be for others. :) For example, for me, the emergency window seat are the worst value in any plane, as the wing covers everything and you can't see anything, plus I want my backpack with me all time; I don't want to put it on the headbins for taxi, takeoff and landing.

The service was entirely consistent with business class on all European airlines' short haul routes (with the exception of excellent TK) which, I agree is a waste of money unless one gets it thrown in connecting to a long haul flight. It was 3 in the afternoon, a 1h40m flight and they offered you traditional British afternoon tea service with a full bar. The 'some kind of bread' was a scone, which you'd have known had you asked. What did you expect? Private suites, a lie flat bed, caviar on tap and a personal masseuse?

Excellent video - some really great views/shots. Is it worth it? Depends how much extra one spends on Club Europe (there are deals to be had). For the extra cost you get lounge access (food and drink - so what you got on the plane for 2 hours looked fine to me), a slightly more comfortable seat (leg room the same but more room to swing your arms around!) plus intangibles like Priority 1 boarding - useful to make sure your luggage is above you (having to place it 10 rows behind you in Economy can be a nightmare!). The biggest perk for frequent flyers / card members are the extra Tier Miles (several Club Europe trips can be a lot cheaper than a long haul Club World). Getting to Silver comes with some nice perks.

Of couse, the price is a very important factor. And many times these short-haul business class tickets are sold in connection to a long-haul one. That being said, the price it has alone... in my opinion is not worth at all. But that's my personal preference.

Thanks for the upload. With today’s mostly overcrowded airports the only real advantage of paying for Business class on short haul is to avoid the long queues at check in and security. I don’t agree with your comment about the food offered on this flight it was totally adequate for such a short journey , it seems that so many people now want to be continually stuffing their faces, no wonder there’s a real pandemic in obesity. I always fly Business on long haul, I think the extra price demanded on short haul is debatable.

Enjoyable video as always, thanks. Great views of the Alps. What I love about your videos is that you give us plenty of views. Unfortunately the 'bean-counters' (accountants) have been at work in BA and its short-haul offering in Club Europe is now one of the poorest in Europe. We flew to Faro and back in Club Europe last October and paid double the economy fare. The lounge at Faro Airport (not BA's fault) is rubbish (cramped and little or no food), but the food onboard was pretty awful. I wouldn't bother with 'Business Class' with BA on a short-haul crossing. It simply isn't worth the additional cost for a 1hr to 3hr flight. Just get to the airport early and eat before boarding, or buy some snacks to eat onboard. BA have also bought some pretty ancient A320s (second, third or even fourth-hand) and on the outward and return flights the aircraft were well over 20 years old.

Nice video. I think the food offering is probably about right for the flight given that Club passengers have full access to as much food and drink as they want in the lounge before departure. I don’t think most people need to keep consuming endless calories all day anyway. 😊

@@cun7us BA use Do&Co for Euro catering and they are one of the best, also used by Turkish. You can only do so much on shorter flights and most European carriers offer cold meals for flights under two hours and often of much poorer quality too. Anything over two hours and you're in to the three course meal with hot main course on BA plus they serve champagne in business regardless of flight length. If you want to try dire business catering, get yourself on one of Lufthansa's shorter flights.

@@dontcare32123 yeah, I saw a recent video of one of Lufthansa's short haul flights, might have been this channel actually. The food looked pretty bad. BA certainly went through a rough patch in the 2010s and dropped from the top 10 airlines if I remember correctly, so they had no choice but to improve. I remember flying from Dubai to London in 2010 and all they served for breakfast was a muffin with candied fruit. It didn't taste nice either. Thankfully they've improved since then, but yeah, their safety record since the '80s has been impeccable.

Could you elaborate how much is considered as a nice upgrade offer? I would give maximum of (extra) 100eur for a service like this, with the airport lounge included. In my opinion it simply does not make any sense to fly on business on a single aisle flight. Anyway thanks for showing this experience.

Looked like a very nice and clean inside of plane. Like the de icing truck. I did not like that high tone of the engines when climbing would need headphones. At cruising altitude it was OK.

Compared to other videos you’ve done I feel this is a nitpicking excuse on the meal. You aren’t in economy, you had access to the lounge before hand which a fair few would eat there too. This is an afternoon tea and in some places it can be around £100+ per person. In addition this was only 2hrs. You’re acting like you were so hard done by. Anything longer and I would agree it’s a little scarce. Other than the meal bashing good video as usual. 👍🏻 especially like the other aircraft destination info

thank you for this trip I've flew once with BA from Jersey to Gatwick but all they served us was just water and crisps which was awful Despite A 30+minute flight! but great flight from Vienna with nice weather also smooth landing into Heathrow too

I have done a number of club Europe flights with BA in the past. Alot of people say its not worth it from a seat perspective however this does not bother me. For me its the experience and how your treated from check in to destination. I enjoy that i get a quick check in, premium security, access to the lounges. The food with BA I cannot fault, The staff always friendly warm welcoming and always wanting to top up that bottle of Champagne should you wish to. On top of all this The points collecting are often double and allows me to spend them for other flights which is a bonus. Not mention being able to take more hold and carry on luggage. Many people seem quick to judge purely based on a seat alone, I have converted so many friends and family to flying business short haul and will continue to do so in the future.

Austrian is Way Way Better, Hot Meals morning/evening, friendly crew and much much better legroom. I can never understand why BA stuck with just 30in, even on the nee NEO’s…I avoid BA as a rule! …Great Trip Report & Amazing Views! You really were very lucky to have had such a clear day

During the pandemix it was an airline very difficult to trust. Offering lota of flights that they knew they were going to cancel, nd then just relocate all pax on the other flights that weren't cancelled. Now i find them much better on that .

Why would you pay for that flight? 90% of regular BA flyers use AVIOS for these treats that make the actual cost of the flight less than £100 return. The only thing with using AVIOS is you have to be flexible but I have just returned from Madrid for 17,500 + £37.50. I was worth every penny/avios. The flight was available 6 weeks in advance.

@@alexmcwhirter6611 Several years ago I traveled from LHR to BKK nonstop Business class with B/A on their 777/300. The food was bearly edible seating was a real mess up. Service was like the food poor, to say the least. I was lucky that my return trip was canceled so had to book EVA AIR. They were much cheaper with Fantastic seating 1/2/1. Food was first class 5* likewise their service. Talk about chalk and cheese. Haven't even looked at B/A since. N/B. B/A has now stopped their LHR to BKK service, thank Buddha for that. Look up EVA Air they have many vlogs on RU-vid and you compare.

@@fredob43 Thanks for the reply which is appreciated. However one cannot compare a short BA flight with one its long-haul services. Both are operated by different divisions with different staff, different budgets, catering arrangements and so on. Yes I know about BA not restarting LHR-BKK and many customers have complained about this. And yes I too flew with EVA in the early 1990s when it first started UK flights. Back then it operated LGW-VIE-BKK in both directions and, yes, EVA service was good and the onboard crew (at that time) had been trained by Japanese airline ANA so, before meal service, they stood at the front of the cabin zone and bowed to their passengers !

BA stands for bloody awful. That is not a business class offering. It at least ought to have two wider more comfortable seats instead of 3 economy seats with the middle blanked. As a British person I'm ashamed that our expensive flag carrier is no better frankly than Ryanair or Easyjet.

What BA offers is what *almost all* European airlines offer nowadays. Remember that when Swissair and KLM tried with larger business class seats in the past it wasn't a success (for various reasons).

I would agree but some passengers on that flight would prefer to arrive at LHR (perhaps more convenient for them than would be STN/LTN/LGW) and then note that these national airlines tend to operate these short flights in order to feed their hubs. Just look at Lufthansa mainline which only flies internationally from its hubs at FRA and MUC.

@@alexmcwhirter6611 I am curious as to why you say that the larger business class seats that Swissair introduced in the early 90's on intra-European flights was not a success, at least from the passenger point of view. On the MD80 series aircraft the 2 X 2 seating, although there were many more rows of seats and the legroom was I think reduced, was the same width as the previous F class seats. I can understand from the airlines point of view that the inability to vary the size of the business class cabin according to time of day/business class demand, which was ONE of the factors for replacing F class with C class on intra-European flights in the first place, must have resulted in some very empty cabins on off peak flights. I recall that SR, along with LH and AT (I include AT as Morocco is IATA Europe) were amongst the very last carriers to abolish F class on intra-European flights and for a while before this had been operating flights in a very unsatisfactory (from the point of view of the C class passenger) 3-class configuration on aircraft such as the 737-200 and even the F28 with C class (Y class seats) sandwiched between F and Y with no dedicated C class galley, or more importantly, lavatory. I once got a good telling off from a stewardess on a LH Boeing 737 when travelling C class and having the audacity to use the forward lavatory, even though the F class cabin was completely devoid of F class passengers. One major complaint with the current intra-European seating product, not specific to BA but I will use them as the example, is the reduction in seat pitch to 31 inches throughout the aircraft. Restoring a 34 inch pitch to the first 10 rows, which would be much more acceptable to C class passengers, would only require the loss of 1 row of seats. Are you old enough to have travelled in the pre-1981 intra-European F class aboard a BA Trident 2 or 3? Although the size of the F class cabin was fixed and there was a proper fixed cabin divider, unlike every other carrier European carrier who offered the normal 2 X 2 seats if F class, BA had these rather unusual seats which could be converted from 2 X 2 to 3 X 3 so that the forward cabin could be used as Y class where the flight was operated Y class only. These seats had probably took a bit of time to convert as various bits had to be folded up and locked and other bits had to be folded down and locked, but the result was very acceptable with a proper F class centre armrest and seat width and the conversion was almost unnoticeable. I am stressing that the quality of the conversion was much better than the 6 to 5 BA C class conversions or the 6 to 4 GT conversions of later years. It would be nice if perhaps this type of seat could be reintroduced.

I always fly ba club Europe, British airways new A320 neo is a real downgrade, the airlines much older aircraft are better, the neo, there is no tray table in the middle seat, little things like that, Ba need to up their game, even their new uniform isn’t good, it looks like a EasyJet uniform not British airways . There meant to be a unique good, classy airline, well, there turning out not to be. After covid in 2021 in summer, I flew club Europe to Athens and it was amazing, food was restaurant level, I would even eat it for dinner at home, when you arrived on board, you where welcomed with a blanket and pillow, where has this standard gone with British airways?

Your service was great! Can you compare any other European carriers that offer anything close to a full bar (long haul style) that is free of charge, AND a meal that is “English High Tea”! Anything under 3 hours on all short haul flights on other carriers require you purchase your food and drinks ontop of your fare! And also de icing is a legal requirement, not a choice, and also what are you comparing this too? Are you a person that booked a business class, who normally flies economy? Because your expectations sounded more like long haul 1st class. And the announcements will be in English because guess what… YOUR FLYING WITH BRITISH AIRWAYS! The fact you were filming through the safety announcements and demo clearly states that you are not a well educated flyer, as this is prohibited… or maybe you should return to the low cost carriers… who knows?

I don't care the airline i'm flying with: a business class of more than 2h must offer a warm meal, independently of the time of the day. I wonder to which airlines you're compring BA when you talk about 3h flights...
