Two times in the past, not holding the kicker cost me 800 and 3200. So hold the kicker

If your wealthy, hold the kicker. If your light and trying to stretch out your day, drop it and go for the 4 of a kind. You can draw a kicker as well. I've been playing video poker for over 20 years.

It's the same concept as holding 4 to a royal for the maximum value of the target hand.

So what do u hold when u r dealt 3 aces with a three and a four as the fourth and fifth card? Which kicker do u hold? Where did you read that a video poker player should hold the kicker card?

Holding the kicker with three As, 2s, 3s, and 4s is mathematically the correct play in TDB. Choosing to play TDB, however, is mathematically a bad play, even with full pay tables.

And, what's wrong with winning with 4 aces without the kicker? It still pays pretty well. And you always have a chance to pick up another, as you would have 12 kickers left in the deck, electronic deck, that is.

Sorry.....there would be 11 kickers left in the deck if you dump one. My bad.

I like how you say “eventually” why wouldn’t I want a chance at hitting more four of kinda even at $400?? I’ve tried this strategy of holding with kicker for many years on and off and trust me I make way more money over time just going for four of kind regardless of kicker.

I would rather win 5 four of a kinds than one with a kicker held.... You seriously need that extra open slot to get the quad in the first place. I see the logic in it, but, I play this same game, and , honestly, I still get kickers all the time without holding them ,,,unless the machine deals the quad with the kicker. Then , you'd obviously hold the kicker. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd rather have a bunch of quads with or without the kicker, than one good win with it.

For what its worth regarding the TDB "do i hold the kicker" question, both sides have it right in this discussion. The creator is absolutely correct that the "correct" move is to hold the kicker, and some of the responders are equally correct that they get more bang for their buck going for the quads and hoping for a kick along the way. Comes down to the law of large numbers in statistics, which in laymans terms essentially means that the more you play, the closer you get to expected value, which is what the "correct" move is based on mathematically. So in other words, if you're a hardcore VP player and you're dropping dimes daily and sitting around the casino for 4-5 hours blasting the machine, then yes..absolutely play correctly because its going to show up in the numbers. That being said, if you are not that kind of player and you're just going in on a random Saturday for an hour or two of fun, play for the quads and drop the kick because expected value is essentially crap based on the number of hands you're going to play out. Its the same line of logic that says you should play powerball once the expected value from probability times the jackpot plus all the other smaller prizes outweighs the price of the ticket that its worth playing. Is it true mathematically? Sure. Are you going to blast out a dime on powerball tickets because of that mathematical fact? Hell no, because its strictly based off that top prize in the grand scheme of things. TLDR: If you're just going for a few hours of fun, hold the quads..or hold the quads and kick if you're feeling lucky, dont feel bad if you dont want to though because its a crapshoot unless you're playing all the freaking time.

Honestly not to sound rude but if I was dealt 3 of a kind w the kicker I wouldn't hold it I would hold just the 3 of a kind if the fourth one comes up w the kicker or with out cool at least I got paid w or w out the kicker everyone has there way of playing

To everyone saying the kicker shouldn't be held because you want more quads. You obviously don't mind giving the casino extra money with your mathematically worse plays. Please respect those of us who aren't so generous towards casinos.
