Luis J. Rodriguez is an acclaimed American author, poet, and community activist known for his powerful works that explore themes of identity, social justice, and personal transformation. Born on July 9, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, Rodriguez's life experiences as a Mexican-American have deeply influenced his writing.
Rodriguez gained widespread recognition for his 1993 memoir, "Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A." This autobiographical work delves into his early life in the violent and poverty-stricken neighborhoods of Los Angeles, where he was exposed to gang culture. Through his raw and honest storytelling, Rodriguez provides an intimate look at the challenges he faced and how he ultimately escaped the clutches of gang life to become an influential writer and advocate for social change.
In addition to "Always Running," Rodriguez has penned numerous other books, including poetry collections like "The Concrete River" and "My Nature is Hunger," which showcase his lyrical and evocative writing style. He has received critical acclaim for his ability to blend his personal experiences with broader social and political commentary, addressing issues such as immigration, addiction, and systemic injustice.
Beyond his literary accomplishments, Rodriguez is an active community organizer and co-founder of Tía Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore in Los Angeles. This cultural center serves as a hub for artistic expression and community engagement, offering a wide range of programs, workshops, and events that promote the arts and literacy in underserved communities.
Luis J. Rodriguez's work continues to inspire individuals to confront their own challenges, seek transformation, and work toward positive change in their communities. Through his writing and activism, he has left an indelible mark on the literary world and the fight for social justice.

Same! As I was reading it, I visioned myself in his shoes during that time, I remember in English class, the last 15 min of that class was for reading our books. I was so into the story that my teacher would tap my shoulder and say “class is over, everyone is gone” I had to snap out of the book. I didn’t even hear the bell.

Why would You wanna read about the same nonsense and kind of people that most likely helped you form the mindset which lead to your loss of freedom? Not judging just asking, I have been in a ton of trouble throughout my 46 years and I wanna go some place else with books, Like I love the classics, Pride and prejudice, Frankenstein, Dracula , Of Mice and Men etc.

I was 17 when I first got my paws on Always Running...fresh outta juvie, beat a armed robbery and my social worker got me a copy. I'm 47 now...and NO other book ever had an affect on me like Always Running. When you said it brought you to tears, I felt that...there was parts that hit me hard as a kid, there was different parts that hit me when I read the book again in my 30s. You be good to yourself, okay? 🍺⚡🍺

I read this book 1 time per month for 9 months in my first year of high school and, each month, turned more or less the same book report. I grew up in the areas that this book is written about, and the language is truly poetic. It tells a story in a way that makes me feel the same way I'd feel as if somebody was right there in person with me personally and vulnerably sharing their life story with me. I'm not a big reader for the most part, but this book immediately gripped me and opened up my mind.

So guess it depends on what lense your looking through. Freddy is the man too though. And I'm sure he gives back to his people as well

My Respect to this man and his history…but he leaves out the most important factor of the Chicano Culture…the Tejas To Califas migration…especially the El Paso / Juaritos connection to all of Califas..from the Pachuco to the T bird used by the Cesar Chavez..El Chuco has to be mentioned as does Juaritos MX when talking about Chicanos in the USA

This man lied about being a LOMAS gang member to get respect and recognition. Wow how sad!. He didn't start LOMAS...IT WASNT CALLED LOMAS WHEN IT WAS STARTED... IT WAS ANIMAL TRIBE, AND AT THAT TIME THEY ALLOWED FEMALES who were called Midnight Ladies. That was the only time a female was from LOMAS. I know this cuz my uncles and aunts are from LOMAS AND i was born and raised in South San Gabriel. Not once have i heard of this weirdo!
